Anyone ever spend new years eve in prague? I was trying to look for some cheap accomodation but couldn't find any. Everything seems to be so expensive for a student budget. If you got any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Prague is the most expensive city in the former Eastern European bloc.
If you want cheap accommodation, better look (or go) elsewhere.

When I say cheap, I don't mean FREE!! There must be some cheap place in Prague as there are cheap places in western cities as well.

Define cheap.
The last time I was in Prague, about 4 years ago, we didn't want to stay in a hostel and a simple hotel room we got was about $80. This was during the fall (off season) and was outside the city center, not in the tourist area. Although it was a weekend, which tend to be more expensive. This price would be considered cheap.
I would expect on New Year's Eve the same hotel room is going to go for at least $200, if not quite a bit more.
If you want you can try a hostel. But I wouldn't be at all surprised if all of them are fully booked. Prague is a big party city. And New Years Eve is a very big holiday in Eastern Europe. The city is going to be packed.

have you even bothered to check hostelworld.com?
They have plenty of properties with availability. $22cad (price jumps to $42 for Jan 1st) per night in a dorm and $39 per person per night (based on double occupancy) a night in a private room.
For fun I recommend the Clown and Bard hostel. However doing a search of hosteworld this place seems to be right near the castle and cheap

I was looking at these hostels but then again I don't know if I would trust people there with my stuff. The thing is I won't be spending much time at the hotel/hostel apart from showering and perhaps 4-5 hours of sleep so I'm not really looking for a party hostel as we are partying elsewhere. Are the private rooms safe there? We also have a couple of friends in Prague where we can crash at but were considering to stay by ourselves as it's more comfortable but if we can't find something within the budget I guess we'll have to.

If your just looking for a place to crash, a hostel is perfect for that. I havn't been to that hostel so I can't comment on it's private rooms, but usually they are just that, a small room. Don't expect a TV or anything that you would find in a hotel.
What valuables are you bringing? So many people go through hostels that the typical things you have with you when traveling (cell phones, digi cams) aren't really that appealing to thieves.
I've never felt unsafe at hostels. Just don't have a lot of cash in your room, and leave your passport at front desk / reception.
A lot of hostels also have rules against locals staying at hostels, so your surrounded by travelers who have better things to do then try and steal your $200 sony point and shoot.
Your private room should be locking, and most hostels will have a locker system or something similar.
Go for the hostel, you won't be disappointed. Cheap hotel rooms in Europe for the most part suck anyways.

+1
The hotel room i had in Prague was small, expensive, and far from the city.
I wish i had stayed at a hostel instead.
Luckily the transit system is very efficient and staying a bit out of the way saved us some money.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I was discussing this with my friend yesterday and he said: what are they gonna steal your clothes?? LOL Yeah i guess some cash and my cam/cell phone will be with me. I'll keep the cash on me and I doubt anyone will sneak into my room at night and take the cash while im there :P. So I booked a hostel in prague, wasnt too bad got it at about 22 euros a night for a double room. It's only 4 nights and there's gonna be a lot of beer drinking as I heard it's very good in Prague.
If you have any nice bars/pubs that you've liked there please let me know. We're planning to go to average bars on 3 nights and go to a really high end club on New Years Eve.

Not true at all
I have been in eastern part many times and last time was just 3 month ago. Poland and Hungary are the most expensive in terms of food(Poland) and accommodation(Hungary).
I celebrated last New Years eve on Karlův most(Charles Bridge) to catch fireworks. Honestly, the best show i have ever seen. Next day even bigger and better fireworks to celebrate formation of Czech Republic.
On topic, it was impossible to find something but i did find a place close to center. It cost me $450 USD for 3 night. I've been in Prague 7 times and had few accommodation agencies in my list so i contacted them and told them to send me offers if they get any rooms available. Every agency would send me 2-3 offer weekly. Not many choice for budget but i finally found an apartment. Not the best one but was clean, warm and a bed to sleep in - thats all i cared about.
I always book apartments as its alot practical and money saver then hotel. There is always a stove to cook in and a fridge to keep food in. Hotels, as a rule are always 10%-20% more expensive
