Generally when a site goes down it doesn't go down so badly that the admins have to post info on another site, especially reputable legal websites. I've seen RFD get slammed by Christmas rushes, boxing day and digg attacks and run smoothly. Lately it's been a fairly rough ride. I'm sure the admins will work it out though.

For starters, it's serverS :)... It's a complex network of web and database servers that is regularly being tweaked and/or upgraded. We're handling 5,000+ people at a time in the forums, when that is more than most websites get a month :p

Holy crap, this kind of disrespect is offensive and shouldn't be tolerated! We've all been affected by the problems on the site lately, but there's no need to treat Kaitlyn like crap like this! Maybe if she didn't have to spend so much time responding to all these whiny posts, she'd have more time to work on the problems. I'm never on at those times and I've been getting it a lot too, at various times, usually after 3-4 pm. It's only 2:17 right now and it's working *knock wood...lol* but it's verrrrry slow.

Guys relax, it's just the interwebs, maybe the guy was in a bad mood or something. I really needed to look at a hot deals thread for some information regarding a purchase today and I couldn't get access myself!

Pffft...We all have bad moods, that doesn't excuse being rude or telling someone to 'shut it' just because the user doesn't like the answer he's been given. He's not the only one here affected by all the problems lately, I don't see any others freakin out to the point of rude. And if it were just a momentary panic from withdrawal or a bad mood, he's had plenty of time to apologize and obviously hasn't seen fit to do so, which IMO it would behoove him to do. Not everyone is 'techie' like he claims to be and personally I appreciate Kaitlyn trying to put it in laymen's terms. Like I said before, it's simply counterproductive cuz it causes her and the other mods/admins to spend time trying to answer the same question a hundred times instead of spending that time trying to fix the problems. When it goes down, I just find something else to do...what's so hard about that?

Just my 2 cents.

We have unfortunately been having some issues but we're working on it. It's most certainly more frustrating for us to figure out what's going wrong and try to solve it, while having so many users trying to access the site every second.

RedFlagDeals provides you with 100% free content. There is no "premium membership" or "members-only" deals, or anything of that sort. It is completely free to you.

Sorry to hear that even that's not good enough for you and that RFD simply sucks.

Touche! Of course I've been finding it annoying like everyone else, but I keep thinking exactly that...it's not like I'm paying for a service I'm not getting! If I were paying for it I'd surely complain but like I said before having to respond to all the complaints kinda leaves the admins and techs less time to deal with the problems, dontcha think??

Ryan
Nov 16th, 2009, 05:48 PM
Yeah, it's been pretty frustrating. We've obviously been having some major hardware issues. They've been hard to track down because they don't seem to be tied to users accessing the site. It's either a hardware issue or someone trying to attack the site.

Neither Kaitlyn or I are IT people, so we can only provide what limited insight we have.

We're working hard to track down the issues and will be doing some major hardware upgrades in the next week or two.

Please bare with us.

Why not outline some of the problems here? There are a number of IT people on this site and I think a lot of them would be willing to throw ideas around as to what might be causing the servers to overload. Also, running on such a popular forum software means that there are people who have probably dealt with issues in vBulletin.

because to do so exposes their internal infrastructure to the public, namely their competition and ne'er-do-wells. never forget that this site isn't a home brew pet project, but a profitable enterprise under Clear Sky Media. there isn't any business i can think of that would be foolish enough to do that.

from a different perspective I can only imagine how productive it would be to have a bunch of it geeks trying to score e-points on solving the issue. the thread would degenerate to name calling and linux vs windows debates (or this case in point (http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/9696306-post19/) :P).

RedFlagDeals provides you with 100% free content.

Small correction. RFD provides free forum and web browsing; the content is overwhelmingly provided by users to RFD for free. It's a small distinction but something important to consider. As an admin it sucks when people complain, but that doesn't necessarily mean their complaints are not valid.

mikep
Nov 16th, 2009, 07:43 PM
Basically at the moment the servers are simply experiencing heavy loads due to processing when we have traffic spikes.

There is additional hardware on order. Some of it has arrived, but we are still waiting for the rest of it to come in.

We still have to configure and put everything in place.

Some of it will go in this week, other stuff will take a couple of more weeks unfortunately.

Trust me when I say, no one get more stressed out by this situation than we do. :)

Sorry for the inconveniences,
MikeP

because to do so exposes their internal infrastructure to the public, namely their competition and ne'er-do-wells. never forget that this site isn't a home brew pet project, but a profitable enterprise under Clear Sky Media. there isn't any business i can think of that would be foolish enough to do that.

from a different perspective I can only imagine how productive it would be to have a bunch of it geeks trying to score e-points on solving the issue. the thread would degenerate to name calling and linux vs windows debates (or this case in point (http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/9696306-post19/) :P).
Get past the ne'er-do-wells (actually, they're not irresponsible, they merely take advantage of other people's irresponsibility), they'll work out internal infrastructure on their own without Ryan's help. I was more aiming more along the conditions surrounding the servers overloading and any other details that might help. RFD already makes money off their users, why stop at the deals?

+1

Over the past month's it's been ongoing like every week. Something needs to be done. I guess Dell isn't paying RFD enough.

Should be resolved I'm told.

I am sorry but I have never seen so many hardware issues at one time.
Looks like the whole infrastructure is substandard. Its easy for me to say as I am not paying.

But still the cost of the hardware is not much compared to old Servers.
Today's PCs are powerful compared to 5 years before server hardware.

The site runs on over 30 servers. The issues we've had have been more to do with the complexity of the setup than the hardware itself per se. It's been hard to track down issues and throwing more hardware at it (which we've already done) has only helped so much.

Looks like you have this site's system design issues and not hardware issues.
Even if one or two server goes down the system should not affected much.

I feel for you guys. Because sucky design will hamper this site for long time.

It's amazing., for the first time in years I'm just miserably overworked, to the point that I barely get in 5mins of RFD time LOL....Even at home I am hardly on. Hate to say it, but SO Grateful this downtime (which I haven't even experienced once yet as a result of my work tempo) is now...because as we all know I'm terribly addicted hehe. If I was bored at work, I'd be...REALLY bored without RFD too :D.

You sound like you either have serious anger management problems or an unhealthy addiction to RFD. If you think you're just all that on IT issues, perhaps you should try suggesting something that might help. Whining and freaking out cuz you appear to be having some sort of withdrawal problems isn't going to get things working any faster! Get over it!
I'm intrigued you didn't get a ban/infraction for this personal attack.

While I am first to believe that respect to one another on the forums is important, but moreso to our helpful admins and moderators, Kaitlyn as admin can handle herself quite well on her own. She's a strong one. I doubt she needs you wantonly flaunting the rules of 'personal attacks', on a unsanctioned crusade. What you said here and in the ensuing few-as acidic-posts could have been quite more tactfully conveyed.

I can see what the person said and the way it was said as slightly innocent 'experssionism' rather being 'rude & disrespectful' as you put it, perhaps that's how Kaitlyn took it.

You're not the hall monitor. Get over it.

Sorry for all the problems. ...
Apology not necessary!, but always appreciated :).

...
Small correction. RFD provides free forum and web browsing; the content is overwhelmingly provided by users to RFD for free. It's a small distinction but something important to consider. As an admin it sucks when people complain, but that doesn't necessarily mean their complaints are not valid.
Dont' forget there is a sponsored membership option. I wonder how much revenue that brings in? Pittance I'm sure but still., it's there.

i noticed the "who's viewing thread" got turned off.
Yeah I noticed that too :(.

Neither are you, you're just another user posting your opinions and numerous complaints and now, even though you're purportedly 'miserably overworked' find the time and inclination to dictate to me what I should and shouldn't post to others....as you know the post you quoted was directed to another user, not you. In your words, I'm sure jetaway (the person to whom my post was directed) "can handle [him/herself] quite well on his/her own". Guess you're not getting that you just did the same thing you're whining about me doing. You have a few things you need to get over yourself.

I know full well that Kaitlyn can handle herself quite well all on her own, I would never presume to imply otherwise. That, however, doesn't preclude me from voicing my opinion on a rude post (btw, I notice I'm not the only one who made a similar comment, yet you only chose to respond to my post....hmmm, interesting). You may see jetaway's comments as "slightly innocent 'experssionism' rather being 'rude & disrespectful'"...good for you, I see it as otherwise. And just as you can say you see it one way, I can say I see it another. Again, this had nothing to do with you, so get over it.

You think I could have made my point 'more tactfully'...again, good for you, but I don't take directions from you on how to speak or write. I respond how I want to respond, not how you or anyone else thinks I should and here I chose to respond in kind, which again is no more your business than my post to jetaway is. He was rude, I responded in kind, you don't like, oh well, sucks to be you.

Oh and I really have to LOL at your characterizing one post as a 'crusade'...seriously, I thought you were miserably overworked, obviously not enough to prevent you from getting in the middle of something that has nothing to do with you.

For future reference, don't waste your time or the white space telling me how or what I should say, I'm a grown-up, I'll say what I want how I want.;)

It's not so much a conversation...conversation typically involves civility. I'd categorize this as more of a diatribe

Well how appropriate, considering the conversation started exactly because of a certain user's lack of civility, as noted by others besides myself.

Well, since you asked so nicely...

I'm the next door neighbor that's been caught up in the vitriolic spray, trying not to watch, but still involved the middle of the whole mess because you're standing just outside my door...I'm trying to sweep up the broken shards that fell onto my property; to get the street into some semblance of order. But I know that the next collision is inevitable because the kids have broken into the liquour cabinet and it's not going to end well.

Think I'll just go back inside, lock my door and watch some Oprah.
