View Full Version : Group Buy: Garage Doors (gauging interest)

Hey everyone,
My garage door is in need of replacement. I figured that I might as well take advantage of the Home Renovation Tax Credit (I have already reached the $1000 minimum) that expires in February and I also wanted to avoid the sales tax harmonization that takes effect in July.
I've been doing some research for the last little while on various garage doors and realized how difficult it is to choose a garage door, especially considering the lack of information/reviews on the internet. I also found that it's really hard to get an unbiased opinion from retailers.
I finally found a great installer (with help from a fellow RFDer) that offers very good prices on a wide selection of doors; I particularly like the Haas brand that he carries.
I was wondering if there was any interest here in setting up a group buy in the GTA. I could have him prepare detailed pricing for a range of garage doors (e.g. good, better, best, etc.). I'm confident that his pricing will be unbeatable.
Please post your interest here.
Take care!

Yes, he does carry Amarr. Amarr would be my second choice. Those installers that have dealt with both Amarr and Haas seem to rate the Haas product higher for comparable models.

If that's the case then I'm looking at either a (I have an insert I'd like to remove at top of the garage door).
Amarr

Material Steel
Collection: Classica Collection® Series 3000
Panel Design: Lucern

Options: color - White
Price to include all hardware needed for install, including track, overhead springs etc. Price can either be for supply only or installed.
I have lots of time so no hurry.

If you are looking for a garage door go to the local Costco.
The one in Brampton has had 2 road shows with Amarr and you can get their top of the line 2" R16 or something 8' wide lifetime warranty for $650 installed.
This is the best price I have seen anywhere.
3-5 of my friends have since gotten doors from this Costco deal.

I agree that the Amarr doors sold through Costco are a great deal. I got my top of the line single garage door for $650 installed. Bad part about Costco is that they are using Promaster installers. Promaster only got a 2.4 rating on home stars. I actually bought from Costco then returned it because my garage is low and I need a double track(extra $160), and I was not confident in this companies service or track record.

With all that said I would be interested in a group buy, but I would like to see reviews on the installer.

I was aware of the Costco deal, and Pro-Master's bad reviews both here on RFD and on Homestars turned me off. Plus, their waiting list must be HUGE. If we have enough interest, I'll see if he can meet or beat the Costco price. The $650 didn't include GST right? Another question: was this a limited time road show type offer?

My father is looking for a garage door so if he hasn't already jumped the gun, I told him to wait for me to do some research, then add me in. He is also looking for a deal on getting a garage door opener installed.
I think the Costco deal is ongoing. I picked up the brochure and you can call them anytime. You don't have to wait for the road show. I, too, had concerns about Pro-Master and was looking at a couple of other places that had good reviews on Homestars.

Well, it seems like there's enough interest to get this going. He's going to put together some pricing for single and double doors made by both Amarr (e.g. Olympus 400/500) and Haas (e.g. Gold/Platnum series) along with window options. The doors chosen will be the common models, but should you want something different he can give you an individual quote. The prices will be for a standard install, so special situations like low head room will cost more. He will come out for a formal quote.
Keep your eye open for the formal group buy thread some time this weekend. I believe that the minimum will be 10 orders for the pricing to take effect.

I plan on sending out the installer info via PM to those that are still interested in participating after the prices are posted. It's a smaller company that will give that personal touch. You will be able check out some pictures of past jobs on their website, meet the owner and even check references if you want. A fellow RFD member referred him and was very satisfied with his work.

I need a single 8' x 7' garage door. Someone here in the Mtl area quoted me $800 for a Garaga door and I thought it was a good deal. But this $650 at Costco sounds much, much better.
Gonna have to go check out the local Costco.

Everyone please keep in mind that when quoting pricing on specific sizes for eg. my 14' x 7' garage door, we need to compare apples to apples. In others words, I can get this size door installed anywhere from $999.95 to 4295.95. It all depends on the manufature, make, model, style, etc. For eg. Amarr makes a 1 3/8" as well as a 2" + door in regards to thinkness and you can get multiple layers and insulation value.

By the way, udh, that garage door you selected by Amarr, is a 3 section door and well insulated but somewhat pricey. double doors come in 14', 16', and 18', you should specify the width as well as height.

Amarr is already selling through Costco in the US, they are now entering the Canadian market introducing themselves through road shows. Ask at the information desk to get ahold of them. If unsucessfull I believe I may have there number from a road show I was at. I did notice also that they Canadian pricing was cheaper then the States which is rare.

I have seen them in Toronto, so they are probably selling in Ontario. If you do find them check and see who is doing the install. The great door, and price may be negated by a bad installer.

Can you give me the number from the road show pls?

Well it turns out Amarr doors through Costco are not yet offered in Montreal. They say they might be ready to provide service to Montreal in April/May 2010.
Unfortunately, my garage door is busted and I don't wanna go through another winter with cold air leaking through the door. I wanna get it replaced before winter rolls around.

I don't have experience with that particular model but I know that the brand Clopay is one of the top ten garage door manufactures when googled. About a month back Home Depot they had a 10% off sale on clopay doors. I'm not sure if it still valid but they also had a 10% off of the first purchase when you get a HD credit card.

I don't think that Googling the top ten is a dependable way of determining the quality of a garage door. I think the best way is to try find people in the industry that have dealt with many different brands over the years and can give a reasonably unbiased review of the doors.
My understanding is that nowadays, most of the major manufacturers produce similar quality door panels (when looking at comparable models). It's really hard to say which one is better...especially with a lack of performance criteria like those available for windows. To me, the most important are appearance (how does it look), strength (how long will it last), resistance to damage and corrosion (can it withstand tennis balls, will it rust), and hardware quality (rollers, hinges, tracks). I heard that Hormann makes a very nice door and hardware, but you pay for it.

Okay, looks like the Costco pricing for Amarr cannot be matched. :( They must have a very large volume contract. Some things I learned about the Amarr Olympus 400/500 sold at Costco:
- The door is produced by a company bought out by Amarr as Amarr did not have foam injection.
- The door is only available in the colonial (squares) design.
- The door is only available in white for less common sizes (14' wide or 8' high, etc.)
I would like to go ahead with the group buy as mainly Haas if there is enough interest.

If thats installed (I presume it is), then that is a good price.
Last year at our previous home I got a 16 x 7 model 9100 (Sonoma panels) with Stockton windows, installed, taxes in for about $1800.
The panel options for the 8300 are unfortunately limited and somewhat dated.

The information that you are referring to in bold is that only for the Olympus 400/500 series door. If so than I'm not familiar with that model per say therefore I can't coment. I was at the Oakville Costco (garage door road show was on) today and got a quote for the model I was asking about earlier and found Costco's Amarr door to be the lowest price I can find anywhere. The dealer told me they can get any door that Amarr or Clopay makes and told me I couldn't find a lower price anywhere else. So far he is correct (in my model) I wasn't told that it's only available in Colonial or only white. I was told any door that Amarr or Clopay makes they can get.
Again this was at the Oakville Costco Garage Door Road show today.
PS. In this thread, I wasn't asking for Costco's price to be matched since nobody will beat Costco's warranty, I was hoping there price could be beat.......is this possible?

Do you know if they still have Costco Garage Door Road Show tomorrow at Oakville (or somewhere nearby such as Mississauga or Etobicoke)? Usually a road show will go for a weekend event but don't quote me on that, I would call the Oakville/ Mississauga location (403 & Dundas) to check. I won't go to the road show anymore since I now have the number I can call to get quotes and or purchase. They're price includes removal and installation of the track, springs, etc. with the disposal of the old door. The lowest price I can get for that specific Amarr door I want through Costco at $1975.00 including gst. installation and new springs tracks etc. The highest price I got for this door is $2990.00. I can get this same Amarr door with the same quality thickness etc with a slight different design for $300.00 less. Keep in mind folks that the door I want is a 3 section door, not 4 like most. I'm very specific on the double door I want. I can get a double garage door installed with glass insert including new tracks, springs disposal of old door etc. including tax for $1175.00 but I don't want those doors. Glass inserts cost over $200.00 so if I didn't take the glass insert option and was only concerned about money and not style or options I can get a double door with hardware installed etc... etc. for under $1000.00 but we need to compare apples to apples.

My sister has a membership, so it's not a membership problem. There's a few reasons why I'm not going with Costco. First of all, I prefer the Haas door. Secondly, I'm not thrilled about Pro-Master as the installer and lastly, the Haas door will be cheaper (for what I'm looking for). I just googled about Wayne Dalton door and found your post in Nov 2007 that you replaced your garage door with a 8'x 7' Wayne Dalton 8300 model (no window) for $1267 +taxes including garage opener installation. I am just curious to know more about the current condition of your 2-years-old Wayne Dalton garage door and why you need to replace with a new Haas door in 2 year???
As far as price is concerned, the quote I got for a 16x7 Wayne Dalton is $1275 (8300 model with window) whereas Haas would cost $1580 (gold model) taxes in. I am trying to justify if Haas is worth $300 premium price tag vs W.D model. As you seem to have first hand experience with W.D garage door, I would like to hear your opinion as to why you prefer Haas.

I also found that when comparing the same quality door to the Amarr door sold through Costco the price was cheaper for the Amarr. I can respect the fact that you don't want to go through Costco for the reasons you've indicated therefore I'll purchase the Amarr door through Costco. I don't see how I can have much of a problem with the installers since they'll replacing everything except the garage door opener which is a year old. Since I've previously installed both a garage door and garage door opener, l will make sure to surpervise the installation. Thanks for taking the time to start this thread and l hope it helps other members astroboi, although I'm curious why you went with the Haas door since I've never heard of such door.
I now wonder since the Costco Amarr or Cloplay door is a lower priced door whether a group buy would bring that even lower but I don't want to highjack this thread and I appologize if I have.

The door was for my mother's house. I didn't do a whole lot of research back then...just went by poplularity as many dealers seemed to offer the 8300. The door is holding up fine. I had to drill through the door to install an emergency release cable and wasn't overly impressed by the strength. The overall opinion in the industry seems to be that they are lagging behind.
Are you absolutely sure that your 8300 pricing includes a window panel and taxes? The two quotes that I've received were about the same price without windows. Windows would be another $300 or so.
I would suggest that you call around and speak to some smaller companies that carry multiple brands to determine which one is right for you. If you come across a Haas dealer, get a quote as well.

Yes I absolutely sure that 8300 pricing I got included your choice of window panel and taxes (see website for samples). A few neighbors in my area got theirs from this company and they referred me as they are still happy with their doors. They installed theirs 2 years ago for only $1100 all in. The price for this year is $1275 and I tried to negotiate down but it's the bottom price from him. The 8500 is $120 more ($1400) but he recommended the 8300 because it's not much different.
Thank you for your opinion about the 8300 model, but how would you know the Haas door has better strength than the WD 8300 if you don't mind me asking? I am still trying to see if $300 is justified for my case only :-)
