If you're looking for a good bluetooth speaker phone to use in your car now that the law has come into effect in Ontario, the Jabra SP700 is a GREAT model! Not only does it stream your music through bluetooth on to your car speakers but it has complete bluetooth phone features as well! By the way this is fully iPhone compatible (I believe you'll need iPhone OS 3.0 or above to do music through bluetooth)

Sig Electronics has this as the cheapest place in Canada right now, I was contemplating going through the hassle of order through Amazon.com and having a friend ship it over given that the US dollar is almost at parity but this is a pretty good price!

$49.99 Cash Price @ SigElectronics

i got my S1 from SIG Earlier...now i feel scammed...
this one is a much better unit especially i am the only one who drives my car.
FM transmit is nice to have too.
does the FM transmit work for songs? i might consider buying another unit if this one can boardcast songs and phone calls at the same time.

Person on the other end had no problems listening to conversation even with windows down. Great buy at $49.

Sounds good, but how does it draw power? Does it have a built-in rechargeable battery? Or do you have to keep replacing the battery with standard batteries?

Sounds like a useful new toy for my car though

It's a built-in rechargable and comes with a car adapter. Battery life is great. I use mine about 45 mins. a day and I have charged it twice since I got it about 6 months ago. Saves the battery because when it's not connected to anything for 10 mins it shuts down itself. Clear on both ends even with window down and driving. Transmits music through FM as well as calls. My iPhone is on 3.0 firmware but used also used it with 2.2.1 (whatever it was pre 3.0) and all functions worked as well. Great unit, great deal. Will be getting some for folks and girlfriend.

Can this unit handle the iPhone 3GS' voice control (if you have OS 3.1 installed?)

A friend has a Blueant Supertooth that when you push the call button, it activates the iPhone's voice control so you can speak names of people to call. Very nice if you want to initiate a phone call from your car or start/stop the music (seeing as Ontario's new law even prohibits having the phone in your hand while you drive, even if you're not talking, texting, etc.)

Very curious about this, it would be a deal breaker for me not to have it. Can anyone who's gotten it and has a 3GS confirm?

Yup from iPhone it transmits songs and phone calls! It stops the song and goes to phone and then starts playing back the music after the call is done

It doesn't work like the Blueant but if you have voice controls through your iPhone you can speak to your iPhone and it will put the call through the SP700.

It doesn't work like the Blueant but if you have voice controls through your iPhone you can speak to your iPhone and it will put the call through the SP700.

The unfortunate thing about this is that you have to

Press the physical iphone button (which may require reaching for it depending on the car, where it's located)
Have to yell into the iPhone to detect your voice (again, depending on where the iPhone is)

I often carry my iPhone on my belt, which means that in the car, with the seatbelt, it's difficult to get to. It would be nice to fully confirm if pressing the talk button on the SP700 will activate the iPhone's voice control.

At least on my blackberry, you can use the phone's voice recognition trough the sp700; just do one quick press on the jabra button.
FM is quite good as long as you select a frequency free of other broadcasting.
(However I broke the FM ability when I've upgraded my blackberry to OS firmware 5.0.238 , it's phone's fault, not the jabra.)
Battery is excellent even when FM is in use, you can charge the speakerphone in your car while using it, notice that the plug is micro usb not mini usb. Volume is great, only issue is when driving very fast on the highway and surrounding noise is too much.
The jabra will shut off automatically after 10 min without your phone connected to it, great battery saver and good way to auto disconnect, unless at home you leave your car in the garage and your phone not too far, in which case all phone calls will go to your car ! (it's the same for all BT speakerphones, in this situation you have to power it off manually)

Notice that most of the SP700 sold under $100 are refurbished units even if it's not advertised, but you can tell by the little manufacturer sticker under the device, it says "refurb" or something like that.

One of my friend bought a very good blueant for around $100, no FM ability but a convenient feature: a motion sensor, which wake up the device automatically when you close your door. Too bad that the Jabra doesn't have it, you have to power it on every time you get in the car.

Also, let me know if you have been able to upgrade the Jabra SP700 with the firmware on the manufacturer website, I've not been able to get it to work. Same thing if you know how to break open the device, I've tried to remove all the screws but can't open it.

From googling:
"Has anyone verified a 2g touch with the 3.0 update working with a Bluetooth Speakerphone/FM transmitter in their car?

I have a Jabra SP700 that works perfectly with my blackberry bold in the car for calls and music. The Ipod Touch pairs halfway with the speakerphone, but will only play through the speakerphone. The FM function will not turn on for some reason with the itouch 2g paired, i have verified this with two Jabra sp700 units as well, so it definitely isnt a malfunctioning unit. Its obvious that this model will not fully support the itouch."

Wow great reviews on this thing. I was contemplating between getting one of these Bluetooth speakerphones or a headset and I just ordered the Jawbone 2 the other day. Now I think I would rather have this. I think I'll pick one up and try it and if I like it, the Jawbone will make a nice xmas gift.

Works perfectly for me! Clear sound plus it's not limited to a few frequency bands like other, it will search for the one with the clearest frequency and use that (you can manually set it to any frequency although it's a bit of a hassle).

So to clarify, if I am listening to say 102.1 FM, and I get a call, I will have to manually switch to the FM preset associated with the Jabra?

That's how I have it on my Garmin GPS, and I don't like having to manually change the station, and then hit "answer" on the device.

2 questions:

1) If someone calls how do I answer the call?? Do I have to use my phone to answer it or can I say "answer phone" and it answers??

2) If I'm listening to the radio and the channel is one I would not use with the fm transmitter and someone calls what happens?? Do I miss the call?? Do I have to change to the correct channel??

Any insight would be appreciated.

You do have to power it on everytime you enter the car, but if you only left the car before the 10 min. auto power off, then it should still be on when you come back. I haven't done this yet as most of the time I'm out for more than the 10 min.
In Toronto, it works great on the first channel it uses, 88.1.
If I'm listening to the radio on another channel, I just use the speakerphone itself and not go through the radio. It only goes through the radio for listening and the speaker on the speakerphone itself is great and loud.

How does this compare with the models that Deal Extreme sells? I really don't want to spend more than $20 or so, and I'd prefer a model that sits in the power outlet.

I got a few today at the Pacific Mall location, I believe now they are out of stock at that such location

anyways, here is some answer addressing some concern above...

- No, its better than Blueant overall because Jabra have FM feature which broadcast you music and call to your car, I dont believe that 50$ BA has that feature... also its slimmer and better looking.

- You can answer phone by just pressing the giant button on the Jabra (just reach up above your head and press) ALSO can call by double-press that same button (Only calls your last called number)

- It has two mode. 1) Stand alone mode which can play music and pickup call on its mini but yet loud build in speaker/microphone. OR 2) using the FM transmitter, it handle everything with your car's speaker, pickup, call and plays music... and yes it stop music before picking up call, when it rings, it just beeps a few time and then you can decide to pickup or not

PS: I still havent find a way to voice activate on my BB via Jabra... is there a way guys? Someone mention above saying it can be done but I cant seem to do so, I can only double tap to "redial"

This is not only a FM transmitter, it ALSO connect to you phone to pickup calls, which many of those 20$ product cannot do

1) The whole thing is a huge button (think apple mice) and you just press it to pickup a call, no phone required

2) Yes you might.. it only outputs onto a specific frequency so you have to tune to it. However if you're listening to the radio and not your music then you can just not use the FM transmitter, the speaker on this thing is really loud.

When i got to the store a half hour later they said they had none in stock and that the two in the display case were on hold for online customers. They checked in the system and it said" hurry, few left" so I asked where these "few" are and he repeated "sold out". Sheesh, what a way to do business. I'm back to work now, and it still says "hurry, few left" for the RH location. So if anyone is planning to make the trip, forget about it.

Poor advertising plus the no return/exchange is their reason for cheap prices. They seem to follow what many ethnic retailers do which is offer cheap price with no frills. Unfortunately as a society we accept this and is why more stores are doing this. If we didn't accept this, then all stores would have better pricing and customer service skills.

Printed off the web site page (showing inventory this morning) and tried 2 different FS's in Vancouver - neither would PM. Reasons: limited quantity (3/customer) and other store said 'needs to be immediate availability' and because it's Ontario - it's not immediate, though FS in Ontario would match.
I'm on the wait list at SIG to order directly.

I grabbed the SP700 off eBay in September when our county started enforcing a handsfree-device-only law. Popped it on my visor and I have no complaints about it. Very sleek looking, loud speaker, and the mic is pretty sensitive (nobody's asked me to talk louder). FM transmitter is nice, though all I've used it for so far is playing music off my phone. On that note, a method of controlling the music playback (play/pause/next/prev) would have been nice, but would have required more than one button.

I use it with an LG Xenon, and holding the button for two seconds does indeed activate voice commands / dialing on my phone. Can't say if it works for the iPhone, but from the replies here it seems to work on many other phones.

I respectively disagree. Many retailers offer decent return/exchange policies and are not overpriced. For example, Canada Computers and Infonec offer a return policy with a restocking fee. If you decide to exchange something, they also allow this. Neither of them I feel are overpriced retailers.

Again, this comes back to the customer belief that having proper sales policies equates to high prices. While this may be true because it does open the door towards abuse, I feel that most customers would be more likely to shop at a store with more customer friendly policies.

We are weaving towards a shopping discussion topic now, so let's leave this post as it is.

On the topic of the Jabra Unit. From what I have read, this seems like a decent unit for the price (especially if price matching is available).

You missed his point. He says he doesn't shop at FS/BB because their return policy (which doesn't include a restocking fee) drives their prices higher. Of course the ones that have a restocking fee don't have to increase prices to recover losses from returns. That's exactly what the post you were replying to was saying.

You did well my friend.

I was able to get PM at FS in Kanata, but they read the fine print on the printout I had from the SIG website about the $9.99 online order delivery charge, so FS added that to the PM equation.

So I ended up paying:

Sig PM @ $59.99 plus Sig on line delivery @ $9.99 = total SIG price $69.98
less 10% reduction from PM differential ($134.99 - $69.98)

Net FS price I paid $63.49 plus taxes. Good enough for me.

thanks, then everytime I get in the car, I need to power it on by pushing the big button. I think I will be fine with this kind of "arrangement". If it is smarter, everytime the paired device is in range, it would be up automatically - maybe I am too demanding on a $50 product...

One of the main differences it that the 700 can connect to your car stereo through an FM station - giving you the option of a better speaker system. It retails for $134.99 at FS.

Yes, that is correct. The Jabra cruiser is also known as the SP715. I also considered but cant' find enough reviews on this product. Also, based on the specs i'm not sure it's worth the extra cost. I ordered a few SP700's from the US for $43.

There was a mention in today's Vancouver Sun that BC will have a comprehensive law wrt hands free devices in January and that they will require a one-touch activation. I believe the 700 should qualify...
