Hi, my dad has some old lenses lying around and I'm just wondering if you guys know if they can be used on the nikon D90.

They are: 35 – 70 mm; 105mm; 55mm.

the camera body he has is the F2 Photomic Head. I believe he said he got the lenses in late 1970's early 80's.

Thanks!

Yes, since the F2 uses an F mount.

Just make sure they are not pre-AIS or you will damage your mirror. Do not expect them to meter.

How would I know they are not pre-AIS?

From what I heard full matrix metering works on the ai-s 35-70mm f/3.5

It depends on which lenses they are, there were many versions with the focal lengths you posted.

Its not CPU'ed, it will not meter with a D90.

Doesn't the D90 have the option to set a non cpu lens data (focal length, max aperture) in the set up menu?

You can always have the pre-ai converted and it should work as well. Not sure how much or if its worth the money or trouble.

Nope, its always been reserved for the D200, D300+ level.

Oh, did not know that. Well its not like I've used that option (I don't have any non cpu lens). But good to know though.

This is where Ken Rockwell comes in handy, check out the lens review section of his site (http://kenrockwell.com/nikon/nikkor.htm), he has a lot of good info on Nikkor lenses including the legacy lenses.

He only has reviews for newer lenses.

Post a picture and I'll be able to tell you.

They won't meter on a D90.

Also, be careful and don't mount them yet. If they are pre-AI (ie, the original F mount) you can damage your camera by mounting them. If you like them enough to want to use them, a conversion to let them work isn't too expensive.

If not, there's a market for them. Heck, if you want to sell them post 'em here (or PM me) and you should find a buyer.

No he has info for older stuff too including AI-s lenses. He also has an overview article on all Nikkor lens types including compatibility with DSLRs etc.

Here's one link. (http://kenrockwell.com/nikon/nikortek.htm)

Nikon made a 55mm AI macro in f/2.8 and f/3.5 versions -- I once had the f/3.5. Excellent lens, very sharp.

The Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 AIS lens is still extremely popular as well. It won't meter on a D90 but that shouldn't deter you. It is a legendary portrait lens.

Are you sure you're not thinking of the f/2.5 ?

Yeah, that's the one I mean.
