Going to hit up Canoe for lunch sometime this week. Do you guys have any suggestions for menu items ? Anything that should be avoided at all costs ? :D
Thanks.

Why bother posting if you're not contributing? Your information is wrong as they neither offer a steak or a steak burger for lunch. You're the type of poster that gives rfd's a bad reputation (ie. filled w/ cheapskates).

No cooked beef steak on the lunch menu.
Tried the mushroom soup to start with, very good. But I'm biased, I love mushrooms.
For main, I ended up having the steak tartare. Or at least a version of it, definitely wasn't the real thing. Thoroughly disappointed.

OK, it's not the real thing? You need to explain.
Steak tartare is prepared in so many ways that you will have to be quite a bit more specific. It can be anything from ground beef to chopped steak to horse meat (yes, in Europe where it originated, horse meat is very common). Marinated or not, spiced or not, with or without anchovies.
So, what wasn't real?

I had the chicken wrap when I went there and it was delicious, I forget the details, but organic chicken, bacon (I think it wasn't pork, but I forget), and if I'm not mistaken an avocado dip.
It was delicious, and wasn't horrible overpriced.

Uh, let me clarify, lest anyone think that Canoe does the same type of "wrap" that Subway sandwiches do! I've had it and you're right it's delicious. I think it's the Chicken BLT and they use Cumbrae bacon, and it's an avocado mayo. And I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.
I'm also a fan of their Lobster Club too, but I always ask them for no cheese, it somehow ruins it for me.

Funny. But I guess that's why food is so subjective. That "not real" tartare is from Cumbrae butcher - one of, if not THE best butcher in the city. So, perhaps this is just not your dish? I have tried it and although it's really not my favourite thing (it was on a set menu for party), it was still very well prepared and it did give me comfort knowing that a. I was eating it at Canoe meaning they take care in prep and b. that it was from Cumbrae's for same reason.

By not real I meant it wasn't classic. Yes, it tasted good, but I expected it to be served with some sort of toasted bread, preferably of higher quality and thinly sliced. It had none of that - their interpretation of the toast must have been the potato chips I found on the plate. The menu did say "Cookstown Chips" but I didn't think they *actually* meant potato chips .

I wouldn't say that someone who doesn't eat at Canoe is a cheapskate, it's fairly expensive for most people

yes but if you read his post, then you know I was critiquing him for posting incorrect information, and making ignorant claims.

You and I both know the reputation RFD carries, don't shoot the messenger. Also he said to "avoid the place due to the cost". What does that say? There is something to be said for quality, you get what you pay for. To write it off strictly on price is ignorant.
