I am planning a trip to KK (Sabah) early Dec., and heard about the Mulu Caves during my research.
Does anyone know whether this has to be an overnight trip? and what's the costs involved?
Anyone knows how much is the plane ride from KK to Miri, and from Miri to Mulu? And which airline?

Well you probably would have to stay overnight unless you have your own plane!
You fly MH from MYY (Miri) to MZV (Mulu). There are 2 flights a day. They use Fokker 50 or AT7 aircraft on this route.
Cost? Cheap! I did this about 2 years ago but I forgot how much I paid. Go to the MH website and find out how much MYY-MZV is.
I remember renting a car from Bander Seri Begawan and parked it at Miri airport and did a overnight trip in Mulu. Then drove back to BWN.
Not much to see but worth going!

Yes, if you like nature, you'd love it. Especially the bat caves.

mulu caves are in sarawak province, closer to kuching than KK.
a cheaper, more accessible alternative are the niah caves, also in sarawak about an hour west of miri
