Halloween is my 1 year anniversary with my gf, and I'm taking her to a restaurant to eat. I'm looking for somewhere that's not too expensive, but not too shabby either (less than $50 for the entire meal, including tips). Would prefer if it's around UofT: St. George campus. It should also have a good atmosphere. Thanks a lot.

Real Thailand
-Bloor just West of Spadina (beside Shoppers)

Beautiful places (candle lit for dinner), great food (pad thai and curries are really tasty), right by the subway, and fairly cheap (1 appetizer, 2 dinners and dessert shared between you should cost $50, maybe a bit more depending on what you order).
Excellent service to boot

I've celebrated a couple of anniversaries here. It's awesome

To stick to that budget I think ethnic food is where you need to be. In my opinion if you can stretch your budget, sidecar has a pretty good prix fixe menu. For $24 each (+tax+tip) you get a real meal with app, entree, dessert. For an anniversary that kind of elevates the experience as opposed to somewhere else where you can only get an entree and maybe share a dessert.

However if either of you wants to have a drink, it gets pricier (but this applies anywhere).

Here is their prix fixe menu: http://www.sidecarrestaurant.ca/prix_fix.html

It may also help to list some places that you guys go normally and what you like. My gf and I eat asian mostly but for a special occasion dinner a non-ethnic place with good service and ambience is what I look for.

Or you could cook a fancy dinner for her. Lot of upsides to this plan, if you can cook or follow instructions.

go Italian. You should be able to dine at Terroni and Mercatto for < $50

Since you're looking for near St. George, you should take her down to Baldwin and pick a place. Lots of options and you should be able to stay under budget.

Just go to a food court and tell her she can choose from any of the daily specials under 4.99.

Good luck big spender!

Seriously though, if that's your budget, and you're trying to impress her, cook the meal yourself (assuming you have at least some cooking skills).

I'd suggest 5th Element on Bay north of Wellesley St E. It's a modern take on Indian food. Sort of fusion. They have a dinner special for $25. So for 2 + tips and tax, it'll be a bit over your budget but not by much. But it's very good and tasty. Here's the website: http://www.5thelementt.com/

I still think sidecar is a great choice. Its really nice there, good service and a great deal for $24 each for 3 courses.

I'm going to try this out on Friday. Going on a date with my gf (for the first time in months). We'll see how it goes, thanks for the tip/advice :D

EDIT: Ahh, fixed menu only Sunday to Wednesday :(

I'll check it out some other time, I think I'll head over to 5th element instead

+2 This screams romance and I guarantee you she'll appreciate it more. Get her a nice meaningful gift with the money you saved on dinner.

Terroni is a great choice - one of my favorite restaurants in Toronto ! And you should come in around $50! Go to the Yonge/St.Clair location -- I like it more just because its a bit less frantic than the other locations. Sidecar is OK .. other suggestions: Baldwin Street! The street is so cute and romantic - some restaurants there are Bocca or Matahari Grill. Enjoy!

+3 on the cook yourself thing. Especially if your budget is $50.

Can you post back here once you try it on Friday? I don't mind cooking up a meal myself (although I lack the skills), it's just that she has a concert on campus that day right after dinner time (7:30pm) and I live uptown (she lives downtown) so it would not be convenient for her to come to my place, eat, and then we go back downtown for her concert. The time buffer would be really tight if any. That's why I was asking for places around campus. My meal budget is ~$50 because the gift budget is ~$100. I'm kind of in a financial pinch right now, so it's the best I can do.

I'm actually going tomorrow, so I'll post it Thursday night/sometime Friday ;)
But one thing is for sure (well, for me at least), Real Thailand has never let me down :D

There are enough reviews on any given restaurant on the internet that you shouldn't have to wait and rely on any single person to give a review.

To each their own, but I think Terroni is terrible.

If you're going all the way to Yonge & St. Clair, Cappocaccia is the better choice. It's across the street from Terroni.

A great place at Yonge/Charles is 7West. It should be right around the $50 mark and it is delicious food. It is open 24/7 and is better earlier in the evening when there are fewer people around.

Don't worry, he wants my opinion b/c I'm special

---

For dinner, went for the 3 course meal

-for starters, the bread was stale

1. Shrimp was really good, the chick pea thing was also pretty decent
2. Salmon was amazing, loved it. Steak was decent, but huge, so it was not bad (but it wasn't anything spectacular)
3. Both deserts were write-offs, nothing special, nothing great

Overall, I enjoyed it. Ended up paying (after tax and tip) around 66

I personally would have gone to Real Thailand. But I really did enjoy the shrimp and salmon. Ambiance was really nice (candle lit, nice mellow music, it was not bad)

how was service?

It was great.
But it was also a Thursday night (early in the night too, i.e. before 6), so the resaurant was just about empty.

Server was great, really got our orders out fast because we had to leave for the opera soon after :o
