Thinking of going to Long Beach for a cruise next Aug. Pre-cruise thinking to fly to Flagstaff to see Grand Canyon, then to Las Vegas for a few days, before driving to Long Beach.

The one-way rental rate from Flagstaff to Las Vegas (or to Long Beach), is very expensive. The best I've found is $125/d from Hertz. Any ideas to get better one-way rental rate?

FYI, I found a good one-way rental rate from Avis ($47/d), from Las Vegas to Long Beach. So for the first few days in Vegas, I can do a different rental, much cheaper than the $47/d rate, then on the last day, return and get the Avis rental for one-way to Long Beach.

Now, instead of flying into Las Vegas (and then driving to Grand Canyon), by flying to Flagstaff, thus being closer to Grand Canyon. After that, drive to las Vegas, and save the 3-4 hr of driving from Las Vegas. The challenge is to find a good one-way rental rate.

Try a travel agent or a web travel operator like Expedia. They can get one way deals that don't appear on the regular car rental sites.

For example: Flagstaff to LAX one way, 3 days Nov 3 to 6, mid size car:

..................day.............3 days
Budget......C$61.63....C$354.18
Alamo......C$105.08....C$397.36
Hertz ......C$134.49....C$594.64
National ..C$152.36....C$576.17

So obviously Budget

Also, some companies like Dollar and Thrifty don't have drop off charges between certain cities in AZ, NV and CA (don't know if Flagstaff qualifies? but Phoenix to LAX has $0 drop off )

Dollar and Thrifty don't have rental location at Flagstaff.

Expedia for the dates around Aug. 23, shows high one-way rates.

Thanks though.
