I just discovered a free webhost I'd never heard of before, at www.verwalten.ch. I just signed up today, so I have no idea how good the service is yet, but I can say that the FTP access is very speedy!
Verwalten (the German word for "administer" or "manage") is a Swiss webhost that offers 5 GB free webhosting accounts with control panel, hosting of up to 50 domains and 50 subdomains, MySQL, etc. etc. without ads on your website. There ARE ads on your control panel, but so what? Only you can see them.
So far, so good! I'll report back once I've put it through the paces.
Oh, be warned, the English text on the main homepage is hilarious Google Translation fodder ("Verwalten.CH is a Free Webspace Provider in Switzerland located. There are no hidden Costs or something that is Writen very small...") but all the important control panel and interface text is in normal English.
