My friends and I are looking to go somewhere warm for spring break. Does anyone here have any experience with the agencies that arrange these kind of trips? Any recommendations or horror stories for who to book through or where to go?

Organize it yourself! Most of these agencies add a $100-$300 (per person) surcharge for doing the "organizing" on top of the actual cost of the trip

Spring Break...already? Don't you have more immediate things to worry about like I don't know mid-terms...exams...or at the least, winter break.

So to throw out an update - I ended up with an agency called "s-trip" through a friends recommendation and after doing a whole bunch of comparisons, they actually were able to give me a price better than any website I found. Going to Dominican for 7 nights!

****, we may have class but you can take it off. Last year I took a 2 week reading week; we had nothing due during that week..so 2 weeks, bam! It was sick (I slept a lot).

Feb is sure as hell not spring...
Even if you're in BC its not THAT warm...

So Spring Break doesn't exist here.
Should be called winter break, who reads, honestly?

Well you guys are welcome to spend your February debating semantics, but I will spend it on the beach in the Caribbean.

Mexico is sort of in a quasi-civil war between the government and the drug cartels.

Lots of non-Mexicans are being murdered while visiting there for vacations.

I'd hardly consider 3-4 Canadians in a year a lot of "non-Mexicans being murdered"... Esp. when 2 are alleged to have ties to gangs
Don't blow things out of proportion and don't like act like an idiot and you'll be fine. Also most of the fighting in Mexico is concentrated along the US border.

but you would still say mexico is safe to travel to despite what is happening? i wouldn't go travel to a country in the midst of a drug war, regardless of where the fighting is occurring. it's just one extra added risk that you don't have to take.

...

For those schools that do have two breaks.. how do you cover your material in time before exams? U of M starts after Labour Day. Exams for the first term usually end around Dec 23ish...

You realize there's a drug war happening in Canada, the US, and basically every country on Earth right?

Yes, and just like with Mexico, I also see news about gunfights in Canada and the US resulting in tourists being murdered....and the US issuing travel alerts about escalating violence related to a drug war...oh wait....

US state department travel alert on mexico: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_4491.html

An article from Feb 9th on msnbc

"More than 200 American citizens have been killed since 2004 in Mexico's escalating wave of violence, amounting to the highest number of unnatural deaths in any foreign country outside military combat zones, according to the U.S. State Department."

I'm not trying to say don't go to Mexico, I'm more so pointing out you probably don't keep up with the news.

You realistically think there is a danger in travelling to a major tourist destination like Cancun? The drug cartel problems are around the U.S. border and many of the Americans killed were involved in the drug trade.

The number of actual tourists who stayed in major tourist destinations like Cancun who died is close to zero.
