This might sound gross, but Crisco (yes...the vegetable shortening you get from the supermarket) does wonders.

It's 100% vegetable oil, so it's natural and cheap!

You can read more about it here:

You're probably not looking for this as a response, but olive oil also works really well.

We use Weleda lotion for babies

I love Glaxal Base! It comes in a thicker cream version, or a lotion version.

Glaxal Base +1. My wife and mother now use it on themselves too since it works so good.

I use Aveeno for my 2 LOs since they seem to have a lower harzard score on SkinDeep database.

Where can I find Glaxal Base? In regular store like Walmart, SDM etc or some specialty store?

We use Aquaphor, but then again, our son has eczema (very dry skin).

Yes, you can find it at Walmart, Zellers and SDM. I've noticed some stores keep it near their normal hand creams but more often it is the cream section closer to the pharmacy. (Glaxal base is what they use for the base of most Rx creams so you may even be able to buy it OTC if you ask the pharmacist.) The little jars are the cream version and are great for very dry skin or acute eczema. I prefer the tubes of lotion for everyday use - once in the morning and once after the evening bath from head to toe. The tube is around $10 but using that often it still lasts at least a month. There is also a tube verion of the cream. This is not as concentrated as the cream in the jars but is a bit more concentrated than the lotion but still easy to rub in.

Oilve oil and Crisco are good choices. Olive oil is actually extremely beneficial for dry skin, contains no preservatives and no colorants. Also pure shea butter is great. You can get some at www.canwax.com for cheap 5.50$ for 250g. And it will last you a loooooong time.

If you're looking for something in the form of a lotion, check out handmade products (either Lush or your local farmer's or crafters' market). The ingredients need to be simple. Lotion consists of water, oil, "emulsifying wax" (which allows water to mix with oil), and some sort of preservative. The simpler the ingredient list, the better. The ingredients are listed in order of quantity contained in the lotion. So typically, the first ingredient will be water, and the second one an oil of some sort. That's how you know that it's a good lotion. You could also venture into making lotions yourself, it's not that hard. That's what I did and I will never go back to store bought lotion filled with chemicals!! The lotion I make for myself moisturizes ten times better than the expensive ones from the store, even Aveeno (which used to be my favorite).

Another important thing to conbatting dry skin, is to get some handmade soap. Soap made from harsh detergents is often the culprit in drying the skin out. So get some soap that's made with real oils either online, form the crafter's market, or from your natural health foods store. It will help a lot!

We've tried the superstore generic version and it sucks. Its not the same. Went back to glaxal.

And superstore has glaxal too.
