Look like M$ is giving away it "Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition" for free if you are student ... try it out:

Windows Server is faster than Windows 7, but there is no 32 bit version.....

Windows Server works well as a workstation OS, and properly set up, runs faster than Vista/XP. I haven't used 2008 R2 so I can't comment on its performance versus 7. Most games also work properly, although older ones may have problems.
However, keep in mind that most, if not all freeware other home user antivirus programs don't work with 2008 Server R2.
