Looking to host a bunch of photos on a web server I own, just by dropping folders of images on it through FTP. Anyone know a decent app that can display thumbnail previews, is free to use, and looks nice?

Gallery (http://gallery.menalto.com/) is very popular gallery software and we actually use it internally at RedFlagDeals. I am not personally familiar with any "auto import", but it can read from a directory (your FTP upload directory). Because this is possible, I'm sure there is some setting/plugin that would automate this process.

Gallery has a bunch of themes or you can create your own, so it will look nice too :)

There's tons of free scripts that work very well, but like all server-side software, you'll have to keep an eye for updates.

Make your choice and try them on here: http://php.opensourcecms.com/scripts/show.php?catid=7&cat=Image%20Galleries

I had good experiences with Coppermine and ZenPhoto.

I've used xenphoto for my own and it's very straight forward to use and just a straight ftp folder upload and you are done for new images.

Only issue I found was the amount of memory that 1&1 hosting assign to PHP you need to add a configuration change to php.ini
