Do I need a special detergent for baby clothes?

I know I have to wash baby stuff before the baby is born but was unsure on what type of detergent I can use.

So any recommendations or advice?

I think we used Ivory.

Yes you do need a special one.

You do not need a special detergent! However, many babies have very sensitive skin and can be senstivie to scents so I did keep that in mind when chosing which brand/formula to use. I ended up with Tide Free - scent free, phosphate free, dye free, etc.

The official word at the hospitals here is use Ivory Snow at half the recommended amount and use the extra rinse cycle.

That said, I'm sure lots of parents just use the regular stuff and in most cases there are no problems.

You should really not use reg detergent, cause it has perfumes and phosphates. I use Tide Free and Clear, if you have a Costco membership, they have the Kirkland version (no dyes, perfumes or phosphates) for a really good price.

I use Tide Free but my daughter would get a rash where ever her skin touched the clothing of someone holding her. So unless you wash everything they will come in contact with you can't avoid other detergents/fabric softeners. Tide Free is more mild than Ivory Snow. The hosiptal doesn't wash their blankets, etc. in Ivory Snow so I don't know why they would recommend it.

I started with the regular stuff but appearantly my son has really bad skin so I had to switch over to tide free too. Didn't really have a problem after that although he still had eczema but I don't think thats related to the detergent.

Definitely no softner as that made my son rash all over....

you should use special detergents for baby's clothes due to the sensitivity of their skin. I use ivory you can also use woolite, but any detergent that is scent free, no dye and do not use fabric softner.

We use Nature Clean for our clothes as well as our babies'. It's widely available in a lot of grocery stores like Loblaws now.

Thanks for all the advice....

I will keep them in mind when I'm buying detergent next time for the baby clothing.

So far, many people recommended Tide Free so we will probably try that....

Is that environmentally friendly as well?

+1 for Ivory snow
+1 for no fabric softener
+1 for no dryer sheet/bar/ball
+1 for dry low

you can pick up ivory snow from costco (I think it's 64 loads for $23.xx; can't remember)

Costco has a very good no dye no fragrance Kirkland detergent which retails at around 14.xx for 110 loads. Very cheap as compared to ivory snow also at Costco for 24.xx for 64 loads.

Typically that is what is needed for a baby: No fragrance, No dye.

We've been using Tide Free for our son, too. Also bought some Nature Clean last time it was on sale at Loblaws...haven't used it yet, but will try it once my stockpile of Tide Free runs out.

I am using Tide free as well as my washer is HE and I don't think Ivory Snow comes in HE version.

+1 for all this!

I love Ivory Snow and used it until each child was 2 years old.

BTW, I don't think that you really need to use HE detergents anymore. Most washers now are HE, but very few detergents are available now in that form. It was a marketing gimmick. Even P&G admits so...

My son had very bad eczema when he was younger, so we've used Ivory Snow all the time, he's getting much better now (at almost 4 years old). I've tried to switch to the Tide whatever for ultra sensitive, didn't work:( so back to Ivory Snow again.
