Supposed to be nationwide, but I only found details for Vancouver schedule & films here:

Note: although sponsored by the NFB, many of the films are foreign productions.

Ok, I went this evening to the NFB Mediatheque in Toronto to attend the first day of ''Get Animated'' Animation Day celebration.

I really enjoyed the Sheridan College screenings of its top students/graduates animated movies. One of the award winning animations was done by a recent graduate who was available with a panel of people from Sheridan for a Q & A.

The kid was very humble and funny and his animation was one of the best there. Also it was one of the moste entertaining ones. It was about this Computer 3D animated model who was trapped in the computer monitor and falls in love with this naked-chick drawing in 2D pinned up across the room on a board. The story revolves how he confesses his love to her and his attempt to escape from the monitor to get over to her on the other side of the room. It had a funny ending.

Now, were the heck were all the RFDers at this screening? We were like a total of 10 people including the Sheridan animator kid and the Sheridan crew.

I really felt bad for the guy, that when they announced his name and he came down to the front stage and nobody clapped. So i started clapping for him and gathered claps from the other people.

Also, very few people asked questions. I asked the most questions (about 4 questions related to the software and hardware he used for his animation and how long it took for the animation to render fully, and what inspired his story). The kid was appreciative of my positive support.

The kid said that because he used a copyrighted song in the animation (which is vital to a very funny scene) he had to pay $600 a year to the music producers just to have the animation show for even 1 time only at any animation festival. >:(

Poor kid! I wanted to tell him to change the song and use a Public domain song (the copyrighted song's producers could have given the kid a break you know!), but it would be hard because there was animated lip syncing to the song. So that would mean he would have to render that whole scene again which would take months.

Anyway, I tried to keep the questions and conversation flowing along with about 4 other people who asked a single question each. Then it was over.

That event was at 6:30 pm

Then after 10 minutes, around 8:10 PM, they showed the Animation Feast (aka Animation Express) which also had other professionally made shorts from award winning and upcoming talented animators.

That second show finished around 9:30 PM

By the way, from 5-10 PM today they had ''Animation Lounge'' (see official schedule for the same on Sat. & Sun.) which has animation workshops for kids. Only on Tuesday 27 Oct. will they have an Adult Animation workshop at 6 PM

The Sheridan animation presentation was today only and will not be repeated. However, those of you who are interested can watch a second screening of the Animation Feast (Animation Express) tomorrow (Oct. 24) at 7 PM and new International Animations screening after it at 8:30 PM (I will be going to the International Animations program screening myself).

Comeone RFDers, go have some FREE fun with the family!

For more information and complete schedule, like the first two posters said, go to:

Thanks again to OP for letting us know about this week-long event.

Have fun everyone!

Speaking of creating Animations, I found out Muvizu
(@ http://www.muvizu.com/Landing.aspx)

Its a FREE program that is very easy to use even for those who never animated before. You just need to have a creative idea or story and make your own movie with the built-in character models and sets.

The Muvizu tool is using the Unreal 3 Engine which makes it a very versatile tool. Since the Unreal 3 Engine is used for the animated graphics smoothness in a lot of 3D First-Person-Shooter games....like Bioshock!

But this Muvizu is much simpler and looks like the SIMS in that you can create your own animated shorts!

I have not used it myself yet, but you can see samples of animations created by it on the site. :cheesygri

Hope you guys like it! :cheesygri

I tried to go but the traffic was HORRIBLE that night because of the rain (I wanted to see the Sheridan ones as well). I ended up turning around half way there since I would have missed most of the evening anyway. Glad you enjoyed it.

for those that have an iPhone/iTouch and haven't seen this free App... add it to your device and watch NFB films right on your player!

Watch faves like "The Cat Came Back" and "The Hockey Sweater" and more!

Do this on a Wi-Fi connection for those iPhone users to avoid bandwidth charges if you start watching way too many films. lol

Here is the link to the App Store in iTunes:

http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=329353638&mt=8

Note: Rated 12+ so those with young children be warned that some material may not be good for the young ones.. but then again... what's an 8 year old doing with an iPhone anyways?
