I've seen a number of specific threads about critiquing photos or series of photos and thought it would be good to centralize everything in one thread. There's a lot of people who need honest critques of their work, and I think there's some great eyes on this forum to help people out a great deal.

Please post the photos that you want an honest critique of. Critics, be respectful but brutally honest!

---------------------------------------------------
I will start by posting a few pics from this weekend. I was in Peterborough taking shots of a couple of friends (not engagement shots, but 'couple' pictures). I wasn't really trying to pose them at all, just let them act naturally in their own element. I don't do a lot of these types of shots, so any ideas or criticisms is greatly appreciated. Here they are:

#1. The stance of the male object isn't too intriging. His facial expression is like he doesn't care or is tired.

#2. I like the wood canvas as a backround, however, those holes were so distracting lol.

#3. My favourite of the 4. Although I would have backed up a bit and captured their entire shoulders.. I think it would make the pic look a bit better.

#4. Good pic. When i first saw this I thought that pile of wood was goign to fall on the girls head and the guy was looking at the falling wood on his girl.

Personally I think expressions are key in people photography and you have caught a nice expression in your 2nd image. The rest are sorta weird to me.

Thanks for the feedback so far guys. I wasn't trying to pose them at all, so it was almost as if I was trying to be candid with the shots I got. I guess we all have to start somewhere!

I go for a candid look in my work as well but you still have to give some posing steps to make sure the photo will look good. But you can't really "pose" expressions and it's up to either you or the couple to hit those awesome expressions. Keep at it! It's not as easy as it looks but definitely worth it once you figure it all out.

Good idea for a thread, seems like it was already going on in the post the lastest picture thread but better to have it's own dedicated thread.

For your pictures, I really like number 2 the best. The backdrop looks great and the genuine facial expression really helps it out compared to the others. The 1st one seems a bit too dark, boring background (although I can see where you were going with it), and wierd positioning of the couple. The 3rd one and 4th one, not really liking the pose and the temperature seems a bit too warm for my taste but I am sure people prefer that for these types of pictures. I think 4 would have worked better with more of their bodies in view (at least waist up) and a tighter crop on the left area of the female or the right of the male to get it more inline with the rule of thirds.

I honestly am not sure what to say with these pictures (beyond my skill level, that is for sure, lol), they all look great. Only thing I can comment on for me is the angle of number 3 is throwing my head off (actually making me quite sick, might be lack of sleep though...) and the black shadow/metal thing in the bottom left hand corner.

Thanks for the suggestions all!

Need some criticism

Like the first picture the best, love the shadowing on the fretboard.

#2 - on the top of the pic near the guy's right arm --what is that? I find it distracting. Seems evident in the bottom right quadrant as well.

#3 - like the angle of this picture, just not digging the guy on the right that doesn't add much to the photo. He takes up a good 1/5 of the shot and doesn't really serve a purpose. That is my thought.

I want to add that in the first shot, there is a lot of blown highlight on the sleeve and the fingers. Some recovery might alleviate that a bit, unless you did that on purpose... in that case, I don't have the same taste as you do then.

Other people have covered #2 and #3 already, and I have nothing more to add.

thanks guys! this thread is a good idea.. cuz every criticism ends up helping the photographer see the things they might miss..

thanks again

I'll jump in. This is my fav shot of the day but I am upset because this was like a week before I got my dSLR... Even just taking the exact same shot with my new body+lenses would have made a much better pic :(

No PP at this point...

Guys, if we can...

Please post two critiques above, when you post your image.

Otherwise, this is just going to be a "post an image" thread.

I like how the lights look like stars here, I don't care if it's bad technically or not.

I don't like the sewer grate in front of the cab. I don't think this image needs to be as wide as it is. I'd crop a bit of the left side out and remove the sewer to see what it looks like.

I can sort of see what you're trying to do here, but I don't like the position of the pole and sign. It just looks awkward and doesn't add much to the picture imo.

I think in this picture, you probably could go wider to make the motion more dramatic.

Too much horizon, crop the sky and wall/grass (don't know what the bottom elements are) for more impact. Top and bottom spaces are too wide and deviates from the central view. Landscape photography is about having balance to present a defining photo.

The leaves are in the way is an obvious critique. Weird crop too, 667x500 pixels? Can we see the entire image? To create a more striking photograph, add depth. It's very flat right now.

For Photoshop, play with the Curves, make an S to give more highlights and shadows, but don't overpower with one or the other. Try a small S then bigger S until you get your desired results.

Can you describe your "make an S"?

And the full version is here, I just cropped to 500 width

This a fantastic photo. Great lighting, Focus is clear and not distracting and the nuances on the wall add to the mystique and balance of the photo.

Really like it.

(The other shots are good as well, though this is my favorite of the bunch.)
