One of their doorcrashers. Amazon.ca is still selling this (discontinued) unit for $182.

With the eTrex Legend, Garmin has loaded a full basemap of North and South America into one small unit. The basemap contains lakes, rivers, cities, interstate, national and state highways, railroads and coastlines. The eTrex Legend is also equipped with additional memory totaling 8MB. The added memory allows the eTrex Legend to accept downloaded map data from Garmin's entire line of MapSourceĀ® CD-ROMs.
Features
1.1" x 2.1" display
8MB built-in memory
10,000 Points of interest
Hunt/fish calendar and Sun and Moon information

Good deal if you want to use outside of covered areas. That is because reception power is weak. So it means usage on water only. It even has 8 Mb of internal memory for mapping. Very basic specially since the b&w screen is 4 levels only. But still. In any case, you can enter waypoints, routes, etc. More powerfull than a Backtrack but also more complex as a bactrack is mean to very simple.

Reception is hardly weak. It's works with USB with an appropriate USB adapter. This unit can be used in the city as well in the mountains, as long as you have some clear view of the sky. This is the original 12 Channel system set-up and isn't complicated at all. It's a great back-up GPS. If my existing Etrex Legend wasn't working right, I probably pick this one up.

Good deal if you're not using it in dense cover or around tall buildings. I've got one of their hcx units and even with its high-sensitive antenna, sometimes accuracy is questionable.

That's for sure. I've had issues with my high sensitivity SIRF III (Nuvi) unit in downtown Vancouver as well.

i got mine the same model 4 years ago, not sure if there is any improvement over the period. the gps is good for camping, as it is water resistant, but really poor in reception in cities, even under trees, and take 4-5 mins to lock satellites during initial boot.

GPS look for satellites because it has an idea of where they should be. If you open your GPS, then close it then open it days later hundreds km away, it will be lost and will take more time to find itself.

Anyway, like everybody said, this unit is good only in open area. But for many peoples (fishing, kayaking, etc.) it will do the job. Hell, it's only 60$!

I found the trick is to lock onto satellites in an open area first and then you're good to go. All you need is to have a lock on three satellites afterwards. You run into some difficulty in certain conditions like u in the forest. On trails with limited open sky, this unit works ok in my experience.

The Legend is a decent unit as long as you know it's limitations. I found hundreds of geocaches with it. Now I have a GPSMAP 60csx, which is considerably faster. In the end, accuracy is roughly the same when it comes to how accurately you can get yourself to specific coordinates. The difference in antenna sensitivity does manifest itself in dense tree or building cover, though.
