I bought the larger white version a couple of years ago. Didn't like the feel personally, but if you're looking for a budget tablet to do some light sketching/colouring this may suffice. Possibly PM at BB for lower.

Pretty good deal. FS had a sale of this about 6 months ago now, ended up being the same price price matched at BB.
The tablet itself is surprisingly accurate, easy to use, and feature laden (considering this is just the entry level). This size is small, but it's more than enough to do most things. Running with a 24" monitor at an "all" coverage (options: all - screen maps to space, zoom - portion of screen maps to coverage) there was still enough space/resolution to operate. Now I've tried it and find it useful perhaps I'd try the size up, but for this price it's hard to go wrong!

I've used both the Wacom models and the much cheaper Monoprice tablet. Believet it or not, I found the Monoprice unit just as senstive and accurate.

I imagine most of these tablets are used for drawing. I keep looking for some kind of technology that I can use simply to write one. Now, when I say write, I mean relatively long pieces. Not just a few notes or captions. I had thought of getting a tablet pc; but I don't really know if they will do what I want, either. I imagine many of you are fairly knowledgeable about this kind of thing on a thread like this and wondered if anyone might have some advice

Yup, I went and had a play with some of the new ones. Really tempted to start using one instead of a mouse and seeing how it goes, has it's pros and cons.
Not the hottest price, I picked one up at Staples for about the same price 6 months ago (replacement for my girlfriend, she didn't like it either. Mouse is horrible to use on it, unless you can put up with the noise it makes all day)

If I wanted to use this to sketch, do I need a drawing software program too? If so, is there a basic freeware one?

GIMP is a good freeware app.
