After our 3rd Kenmore vacuum died after 18 months and Sears response was essentially "you should have bought the service plan" we ended up buying a Miele from Costco. A bit of apples/oranges in that the Kenmore is a canister and the Miele an upright but the perceived quality and actual performance difference is obvious. Everything about the Miele from swich gear to the plastics is of clearly higher quality. The real kicker for us was that the Sears model was a new "floor model" bought at $450. That unit was normally $699 at the time, one of their best models. It required $300 in repairs in less than 2 years. The Miele comes with a 5/7 year warranty at no extra charge and was bought for $399. I'm normally a big supporter of CR but I wonder if they got it wrong here. Last I checked Costco had cannister Miele's in stock for $429. On a happier note, my credit card is paying for the repairs (though after a hoop laden process) and we can now assign the Kenmore to garage duty. Check these Youtube videos. #1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqJhGqZg7uI) and #2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5NLlCWNF6U)

I have to agree with the last poster. Our family had kenmores for years that seemed to be built like a tank. I bought one 2 years ago it was $400 on sale. Not the top end but second down. After the first year the roller bar melted in the head unit. I took it in for warranty repair with my two young kids 2, and 4, and they turned me away cause I had to have the whole vacuum with me. Finally had it fixed under warranty. We felt it wasn't doing a great job anymore after 2 years and it started to smell when we vacuumed. I replaced the hepa and other filters and it didn't help. I bought a dyson and gave the kenmore away. Now it's cutting out power to the person I gave it to.

I would not buy another kenmore again. The quality is subpar. Miele / Dyson whatever .. I don't dare to compare in this forum which one is better. All I can say is my dyson seems to be working fine!

In regards to CR, they give out overall reliability figures.

Doesn't surprise me about the Kenmores right now. They're rebranded Panasonics, and Panny's getting killed right now financially.

Miele has also had poor reliability at times.

I wonder if some of the problems have been addressed given the Answer in the Q&A area under Durability? <http://tinyurl.com/yl6tur6>.

Stay away from Sears. Bad products and most poorest sevices on major appliances and even small ones. It has been more than 3 years since I last shopped at Sears. Happy to spend elsewhere than giving Sears for such products and services.

we have had kenmore vacs for at least 30 yrs and they were well built. The last one was bought in 1994 and it is falling apart but still works. On our vacation this Sept in the US, we bought a new Kenmore vac on sale for 225. when it is on sale in canada, it is 399 so we saved a bunch. We've learned never to buy from sears canada because their prices are substantially more than in the US. From the experiences of current users, I am now worried that this vac will not last long.

Care to offer a bit more info... for example, reasons/sources/whatever? Perhaps you have options/alternatives such as the Electrolux Oxygen or the Hoover WindTunnel Bagless?
