Not hot, but not bad for anyone who NEEDS a decent desktop:
http://www.thesource.ca/estore/product.aspx?language=en-CA&product=2511818&category=Clear_Desk&catalog=Online&tab=2#more
Good:
Dual Core
200GB Hard Drive
Card Reader
Vista
DVD/RW
Bad:
512 MB Ram. Spend 30 bucks and upgrade it to 4 gigs, and you'll have yourself a not too shabby setup. Free delivery to your nearest crappy tcss.

Wouldn't say the dual core is a good thing (3600+) but for a net surfing machine it looks great.

Crap. Maybe this ain't so hot after all... I just discovered that the processor offers a 2 x 256 KB Cache. That is WEAK.

Is it Duel Core?
I don't know what is a duel core...sorry!
It's the last gen setup where the two cores both try to handle a CPU call at the same time, they battle it out and the stronger/faster/more responsive core takes over. Hence the "duel" core name...

motherboard i think is FOXCONN MCP61SM-AM
- AM2 motherboard, 8 channel audio, 4 dual channel DDR2 DIMM memory slots, 1 occupied with Hynix 512MB DDR2 PC2-4200 memory
http://common.packardbell.com/itemnr/instr_connectors_MCP61SM-AM/MCP61SM.gif
its not a bad deal, i'm still using a dual core 3600 myself which is overclocked to 3Ghz, i don't really game on my PC anymore but even if you wanted to game it should be more than suitable for World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, it could probably play some of the newer releases if you add a 8800gt or higher video card

you cant use spc with that
since its a computer.
anything electronic or have a screen does not qualify for spc.

not sure if the motherboard could support it, but if you're lucky, you may be able to replace with a XP 5600+ (max 2.8ghz), probably the max cpu for this mb.

think its a good deal? i have an extra pci-e graphics card i can toss in it... think this computer can handle HD? I'm mainly going to use it for browsing and word processing and HD would be a plus since i have a 24inch HD monitor hahaha
marksoju
Oct 13th, 2009, 09:53 PM
This thing will handle HD, but not well. 1080P would be pushin' it. You seriously need to max out the ram. And the 256 kb x 2 doesn't help.
This is probably the weakest of ALL DC processors.
But not bad for 2 hunnert bucks.

As an htpc machine, throw in another 1gb of ram and a low-end Ati 45xx series card and you should be okay to playback ripped HD-DVD or BDs at 1080p.
I'm using an Intel e2140 with an Ati 4550 to playback ripped disks. Video playback at 1080p/24fps is perfect from a BD-rom or hard disk.

+1.
$200 for a desktop is great, nothing against the original poster.
But considering how often an average person buys a computer, I'd recommend putting that extra $100 in and getting that instead.
Say you intend to use that computer for three years. An extra $100 / 3 is about $34 a year, or about 10 cents a day.
You easily pay more than that in internet access fees. Why have a computer that could slow you down more than your internet connection?

right on spc website. and I believe it may have also been included in the book that came with the spc card.

Thanks OP. It's tempting but it doesn't qualify for an upgrade with Windows 7 and I would be stuck with Vista. The first day I used Vista, I thought I was gonna go crazy trying to figure it out. lol

$200 for a desktop = blazing hot in my book. If a netbook is acceptable for grandma to surf on, so is this.
The $300 PC at FS is a good deal too, but 50% more expensive and not in the same universe as what we have here.

I have a Athlon 3000+, 6 years old, no problem in browsing internet or watching 1024p videos.
I do not see any magic on the horizon making Internet faster than the OP's machine in next 3 years.

Long shot, but does anyone know of any upgrades for this??
I am not the best when it comes to PC's...
Ideally i would get this and add some RAM and a better graphics card.
Let me know! :p
My local store still has one, and the 10% disc with SPC doesn't apply to this unfortunately ... N/A on cell phones, TV's, PC's/Laptops. I was still around TSCC when they introduced this. It applies to small items, ie. headphones, batteries, etc... Not big ticket items! :P

I recall a similar threat for a limited time 199-299 desktop. It ended up being way better to make a pc. Yet, I am on my NB(netbook) and don't have a desktop to talk about...
This desktop is truly that, warm. I don't have extra cash to take this up and grab a monitor so...
I will wait til I have the cash before purchasing a new desktop as I'd rather maximize my hdd space for now =p.

Sorry I can't answer your question, but if you are going to put in more RAM and put in a graphics card, wouldn't that sorta add up to around $299+ ?
If RAM costs around $30 AND I know graphics cards cost a bit then it will add up right? The Futureshop one would mean less work for you:)

Bad advice. The Futureshop PC has no video card either. No PC less than about $500 will. Surely this has a crummy power supply, but it should have no trouble with an ATI 4350, 4550 or 4650 video card which run about $40/$50/$60 respectively at a PC shop like Canada Computers.
Do note the RAM is the most important thing to upgrade however.
