With promo code EMCMLMP42 exp Oct14
I bought one because of the price drop. Been eye balling a sound card for several months now and was going to get the one lower than this card for $99 but then this went on sale ... had to buy it :)

I'm new, nothing more, nothing less. Easy mistake for a new guy to this site.

Don't mind some of the people here...they tend to be overly aggressive and rude to new people who don't follow the code that they have tucked neatly away in there heads.
Welcome to the boards and a great deal for anyone in the US

Its okay, we all make mistakes.
Tell ya what. To prove how forgiving we are, buy me one - at this great price - and mail it to me and everything will be forgotten ( by me )

Doh. I was looking for a decent sound card. I've been running of my onboard sound for too long.

I thought it was and I've been looking at sound cards for a year now trying to find out if I want one or not. This deal was what made me actually buy a sound card, my first sound card at that.

After the Daniel_K incident, I swore I'd never buy another CL product. CL crippled Vista drivers and blamed it on MS, in order to force Vista users to upgrade their soundcards. Most people don't need a discrete soundcard, and anyone who does should by one from a different manufacturer.

Yeah that whole thing was fishy to say the least.

Are there still Vista driver issues with the X-Fi?

You can get Daniel_K's drivers from the soundblaster forums. I know the Audigy problems were fixed (which is what I had) so I'm pretty sure the X-Fi is the same story.

Oh well, just for old time's sake, I'll give CL another shot since the card is only $80.

I don't see anybody being aggressive or rude here. Just wary, and correctly pointing out that it is a US-only deal.

I have a creative X-FI extreme music and I've stopped using it in favour of my onboard sound card.
Driver support simply isn't there so there's no advantage in using this otherwise perfectly fine card. It seems the official drivers are severely crippled.
Apparently Creative wants you to "upgrade" to something newer, but essentially identical (such as X-fi Extreme gamer) for the driver support.
Nobody likes to be jerked around.

I was actually looking at that card I think. It was a tad cheaper till this sale came on. I read a lot of reviews that have been mixed about people getting it to work on 64bit systems and with Vista. Some don't get it and some do. I put that into my thinking as well and it was a major reason why I didn't get one right away for my gaming PC (still using on board). But I just put a lot of money into my home theater and want to see if I can tell if there is a difference in sound quaility on my HTPC that is running Windows XP 32bit.
I'll let you guys know if I can tell a difference. I'm not one of those audiophobes either.
Edit: I'm just going to edit this post cause I don't want to jump the deal that has exp. The sound card doesn't make all that big of a difference to make me want to go out and buy another one. Its nice, but more of a $20 upgrade as far as I'm concerned.

xtremegamer has different hardware from the gimped xtremeaudio, which won't hardware accelerate streams in games. which may all be moot since hardware acceleration was dropped from vista/windows 7.
