If I read OP right, "Menu price for Peking Duck is $45.00"

IMHO, Peking Duck at New Markham Villa (http://www.newmarkhamvilla.com/) is pretty darn good and the price is very reasonable. Ask for the Cabbage warp option for the mince dish.

To those who are not familiar with Peking Duck. It is usually serve as 2 dishes. The first dish is just the crispy skin wrap with pancake, scallions, sauce and the second dish is made from the minced meat from the rest of the duck.

Gosh just thinking of it makes my mouth water and hungry...

The worst I have is at Honey Garlic Cuisine (which is just near by), had it twice at different occasions, will not order that dish from them again.

Last month I went to a restaurant near Hwy 7 and McCowan, they had this deal which you can get a peking duck (2 courses) for $9.99 if you spend $30 or more in cash. I ordered 3 courses + the peking duck. It came to around $50 w/ taxes and gratitude. Good for three adults + take out.

That is a horrible deal... $45 for peking duck ?!!?

I just went to The Perfect restaurant on Shepperd near Brimley, they have the peking duck for 8.88 if you purchase over $15 worth of food and pay in cash... now _that_'s a deal... and this is probably one of my fav restaurants.

Are those deals posted in English or Chinese? The only Chinese I can read are numbers lol (even then I get 5 and 7 mixed up lol), so I wouldn't know what they pertain to surrounded by Chinese text....thx

The Perfect restaurant has been a family fav for a long time, I'm not aware of any health issues that they have run into, they have had a passing grade for awhile now. Food is good and the prices are decent, I wouldn't say they are overpriced at all... they have cops eating there all the time...

I wouldn't want to see the kitchen granted but I'm sure they're all the same. This place did renovate not too long ago so it's not as ghetto as it used to be.

Went there last night with some friends, and will most likely never go back again for the following:

1. food is overpriced, which means the coupon really isn't worth it
2. I found it odd that they would charge you the extra $5.00 for the 'second' dish to the duck when in fact, the 'second' dish is part of the duck dish, at least at other places where I've gone to
3. this is the first Chinese restaurant I've been to where they charge you for tea at dinner, maybe for dim sum, but for dinner it's a first
4. when we went there, there were more non-Chinese at the restaurant then there were Chinese, my friends who are not Chinese basically said 'this is like the Mandarin'

The place is nice, good service, food is ok, not bad, but not outstanding either. I've had better for cheaper, I'd rather go to a not so good looking place for better and cheaper food.

Go only if you're all about service and location/atmosphere.

in regards to the $5 charge for the second dish, how did you have it prepared? if you chose the lettuce wrap way, there is usually a surcharge...for other restaurants as well

if u just chose to have it cut up, then that's different

I think that deal was posted inside the restaurant and in Ming Pao Daily in Chinese only. Here are their information:

People Seafood Restaurant
Unit 6-7, 5051 Highway 7 East, Markham, ON
905-415-3883

There are two deal for dinner. First deal requires you to spend $20 or more on regular priced items before taxes. You can get a lobster for $5.99. Second deal requires you to spend $30 or more on regular priced items before taxes. You can get a peking duck (two courses) for $9.99.

Ambassador is one of the higher class Chinese restaurants. Yes it's expensive but you are paying for a better dining experience. You can't really compare it with the cheaper places.

i feel bad for you guys in TO. I went to a chinese restaurant called Legends there and it was pretty bad. from what i heard, it's one of the more "okay" ones in the GTA and it's a chain?

the peking duck is messed up over there. all they give you is the duck meat. here in vancouver you get lettuce wraps with it. and the first dish with the skins has a weird, thicker wrap with it. i'm used the thinner ones they serve.

maybe i just went to a bad place. service was ok though.

Sounds like "Asian Legends". That I believe is a small chain in the GTA.

"Asian Legends" is actually a pretty big chain (for a Chinese restaurant) with 6 stores in the GTA. Their food is slightly modified to be more appealing to mainstream (aka non-Chinese).

Ambassodor on the other hand is a traditional Cantonese-stype Chinese restaurant.

As for the 2nd dish, it depends on which place is serving it. Minced duck meat with Lettuce wrap is one way of preparing it. Stir-fired the sliced duck meat with vegetables is another. Some places would come with a 3rd dish where they basically boil soup with the leftover duck bone. You can also opt to not have it prepared the above ways (they cost extra) and they would just serve the remaining parts "as is" by chopping them into pieces with bones in tact. So it's not "messed up", it's just different.

I think the traditional Beijing style of preparing it is to just serve it "as is", and only the Cantonese restaurant would offer the option to make the 2nd dish. Asian Legend is technically a northern style restaurant so I am not surprised they do it the Beijing way.

Very good point here.

Not all restaurants are created equal. Are you looking for just cheap Duck at the lowest possible price or are you looking at good quality, service and an overall better dining atmosphere? 1 star versus a 4 star establishment?

Steak can be had at many restaurants but you can have it at an expensive place like Harbour Sixty or Ruth's Chris or you can do the low budget route and have it at a local diner or even Shoeless Joe's.

The discussion on the duck needs to include more than just the price.

Anyone been to Emperor's restaurant (bayview and something....in richmond hill I guess). I believe its also a "higher class" chinese restaurant but that they have half price peking duck on Mondays. I've read good reviews about it on Chowhound but never heard it mentioned here.

I think the point here is that, if you go to Ambassador Restaurant and expect the best bang for your buck, chances are you are looking into the wrong place. Because most of what you pay for goes into their service.

There is nothing wrong with that since different restaurants serve different market segments. Dining in hotels charge even more for the services they provide.

If you want your best bang for your duck, look into Chinese restaurant yellow pages in Chinese newspaper like Ming Pao or Sing Tao. That's usually where you can find good deals (like the $9.99 Peking duck deal I cited earlier). Words of mouth also work too.
