View Full Version : Why Is The Grocery Roundup In Scarlett Lounge?

I think it is highy sexist that the "Grocery Roundup (http://scarlett.redflagdeals.com/mommy/grocery-roundup/toronto/)" is in the "mommy" section of Scarlett Lounge. Do you think that buying food is only for women or mothers?
Nobody except me does my groceries. I don't need a woman to do my groceries.

same reason why you won't find much (any?) electronic deals over there. it's all part of the belief that all women care about are makeup, their horoscopes, and clothes.
What was the women's movement all about again?

Scarlett Lounge has a separate staff and it's own content generated by that staff, including the grocery round up. We link to it on RFD because it's good content, but it's their content. They link to content on RedFlagDeals.com proper, like tech deals, when their editors think it will appeal to their audience.
And MrDisco, you show your own biases with that comment. Scarlett isn't meant to appeal to every woman by any means. Audiences are more sophisticated than just divisions by gender.

I fully get it - they're going after the Cosmo crowd where things like personal finance, car advice, or other such 'manly' topics are just too hard for women to think about.
Why is it that when I call for integration and bringing more females into the RFD fold I'm some how the bad guy in all of this?
The next time a woman complains about how they're unfairly portrayed in the media and treated in the workforce I'll just think of SL and roll my eyes. Self-inflicted sexism is alive and well it seems.

Well for one, we actively are trying to have more women on RFD. The numbers I've seen say that the RFD audience is already 40-50% female. Second, not every site needs to cover every topic. RFD started out as a site just for tech deals, over time we've expanded it to cover a lot of different things. The same will likely happen with Scarlett. Currently Scarlett has more of a focus on Lifestyle/Entertainment, but I would personally reject your association of trying to be more 'fun' with being vapid.
Anyway, I'll pass along your comments to the editors as I always do.

It was about women's right to choose their own interests without judgment by men (or anybody else for that matter) as to what those interests should be. The SC IMO isn't the be-all-end-all of women's interests, but it is one forum dedicated to some issues some women are interested in. Most of the rest of what we're interested in can be found in RFD proper....or not.

Thought I'd send a response as the 'Cosmo crowd' comment hit a chord with me.
I'm a female in my 20's and I read GQ - better articles and less 'good-god-you're-hideous-unless-you-buy-this' abuse from the ads. A few editions ago there was a section on tips for doing a euro-trip, broken down into 'roughing it' and 'doing it up' versions.
Women's magazines have all that stupid stuff in them because thats what marketers *think* women want, not what a lot of women actually like to see. I gave up that BS a long time ago, made me happier =)

Obviously there is still alot of work to do as some people still don't get it. As a female, Scarlett Lounge has nothing I'm interested in. I didn't even realize the grocery roundup was over there since I never visit that site. Of course, as a smart modern woman, I have no problem reading the flyers to find the weekly grocery deals and don't need someone to point them out to me. I'm more interested in the tech deals etc. that don't come in the weekly flyers.

+1! I find the content at SL really lacking and definitely not well geared to most demographics other than the fashionistas who'll pay $1500 for a pair of shoes. Even my teen daughter isn't interested in the "fashion" stuff there... Just another site full of expensive designer purses. >:(

How is that even applicable?
All I see is women speaking up to say that they aren't interested in the content in the scarlet lounge because it isn't very well rounded. I see no shrieking harpies only on-topic posters.

The united response deriding Mr Disco's comments (and the fact that I love that Flame Warriors site) is why I made that post. :cheesygri

I have to agree CSK'sMom, in fact I rarely visit the SL anymore. I did a few times at first and then lost interest. Although I was in there the other day when the forums were down and it was the only thing I could get into. Took a boo around and still not all that interesting. And that's coming from a shoe ho who would pay $1500 for a pair of shoes, but only if they're Jimmy Choos...lol!
