Hey, I've tried googling this question, but haven't come across anything yet:

With regards to connecting words, does anyone know if you can connect upwards? For example, I'll try illustrating below

....................i c e s
..........t i g h t
..s o l o

- If "tight" is the initial word, I am pretty sure that you can add the word "solo" below it to connect downwards, but I don't think you can use the word "ices" above because it connects upwards.

Can anyone confirm? I've had a few arguments with my friends/fam on this rule...

Thanks!

thats a legit move.

Except... for strategy purposes... I'd save that S... it could be used to make more combos...
(S) and Blanks are valuable b/c you could use them to make combos...

example...

t i g h t

then you add

t i g h t s
............c
............r
............a
............p

You steal the points for "tights" and you get points for making the word "scrap".

Yeah, but it's always easier if someone else does the work. That's the RFD way.

I'm not sure if the example given was accurate to the situation, but as it is written that is legit. The word 'it' while formed above is still read downwards. If, on the other hand, the word was 'over' it would be deemed unacceptable as 'ot' is not a word when read downwards, even though the word 'to' is made reading upwards. The rule, which may be implied rather than written in the rules, is that words are always read left to right, up to down.

Yeah ICES on top of the word is perfectly fine. As long as the letters you lay down only go in one direction (horizontal/vertical) and those letters all connect for one word, then it's valid (assuming it properly connects with whatever is already on the board, of course).

Here's a good scrabble themed short story: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORGMRi_nAgM

lol smartarses.. this is an exmaple-specific rule which isn't in the box, obviously.

I didn't think that the word "ices" could be formed since your primary word is now "it" which reads downward but really your primary word is built towards the left. Kinda confusing, but I guess that's a legit move.

Thnx

It's a legit move. You can build words however you want as long as they read from left to right and/or downwards and connect with a previous word.

I really don't understand why you think it's not legit. The rules clearly explain this is a legit move, whether the specific example is in the rule book or not (it won't be, obviously).
