Help..buying a PC from Kijiji (quick!!)

Hey, a guy on Kijiji is selling this PC

RX-9 Case with remote and intergrated temperature watcher
Ultra X Connect 500 watt power supply
ATI Radeon X1600pro 512 Graphics Card
Sony DVD-R Dual Layer Burner
Ultra 7-1 Card Reader/Floppy Drive
HDA Digital X Mystique 7.1 Gold Sound Card
Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe Gaming Motherboard - Bad Bios :(
AMD 64 Athlon 3800+ Socket 939 Processor
3G RAM - I think
All CD's and software
And tons and TONS of extra parts ( for the computer )

I priced it out, and its over 620 in parts

I am going to pick it up for 250, however, there is a BIOS problem. Which is probably why the price is lower.

He said "I built this computer about a year ago and somthing happend to the Bios. I was going to take it in to get fixed but I had to move for a job and I left it behind and ended up getting a new one, so now longer need this one, the computer is very powerful and totaly customizable, all you would need is to get the bios fixed and a hard drive to get this baby going"

Is fixing the Bios a big problem? I called him & he said the first time it happened he got the motherboard replaced, and then outta no where the bios messed up.

IMHO,if you don't know,don't touch it. Not sure whether it is working or not,if not,then you even don't know whether it is Bios issue or not.
PS, you have to pay HD extra 200 dollars,so it ends up 400 or even more,why don't get a new one?

It's up to you. If the parts are worth significantly more than your cost then you can Part Out to recoup money.

However, it's a headache to test each component and providing refunds for DOA parts...that's part of BST trading. You're responsible for what you sell.

BIOS repairs are not that simple and usually dependent on the manufacturer & model. How will you flash the BIOS if the mobo is unresponsive. Is it like ASUS which allows you to access BIOS? These are some problems you'll have to solve.

But hey, you're making $400 on this deal right?

Well I know a bit about PC's and there is a really smart PC guy I know who can fix the bios...

I'm going to get a 20GB hard drive off of kijiji cause I don't need much space (like 160GB)

so $270, is it worth it? I wont be paying to get it fixed...

And do you think it will run COD4 at all?

It's a back up plan in the event you fry your BIOS. I'm against purchasing damaged products unless I'm certain I can repair it. Your PC looks good and you have a friend willing to help so buy it.

Search RFD's BST and buy from a veteran seller. Otherwise, post your budget and ask members to help you gather parts from NCIX...you can pay NCIX to assemble it or do it youself, or pay $20 to have a RFDer to do it. Your goal should focus on purchasing the BEST PSU & Vid Card at your price range.

This may be a hard question to answer, but how do you think the benchmarks will do with games like Call of Duty 4 and other games?

I'd say $250 is pushing it for what this machine is worth, even if it actually worked and had a hard drive and an operating system. All of the technology in it is older. Who knows what is actually wrong with the motherboard? If it was a bad flash, it can be tricky to get it resurrected and finding a replacement socket 939 motherboard isn't easy as they have all but evaporated in the shops. Put the $250 towards a new machine, or at least one that actually works.

Do yourself a favor and don't buy it. For starters it is a socket 939 system, which means its upgrade-ability is next to none; you can change the ram, HD's and video card and not much else (might find a decent x2 in the BST section if you're lucky). Also that 1600 Pro is pretty weak, be lucky if it doesn't struggle with that game with all settings on low.

The $250 he is asking for it sounds about right if it had a hard drive and no bios problem. Not worth the risk if you can't get the bios issue fixed for cheap (free would be best), as then you would be stuck with a motherboard that you will have a very hard time getting replaced.

That PC is maybe worth $150, assuming the mobo needs to be replaced and you need to get a HDD $250 is too much.

Spend about $400 and you can get a computer that is 5x better.
