I'm already in the process of switching my computers over from XP/Vista to Windows 7 RTM. I'll be done long before SP1 comes out.

Already completed the transition. I am enjoying the use of Windows 7 right now. I must admit, Windows 7 on-release is way better than when Windows XP was on-release.

Considering that Windows 7 is sorta like Vista SP3 in a way, it should be fine.
Even Vista SP1 fixed a lot of problems, compared to the initial release.

I have an XP/Win7 dual-boot laptop. The only thing I like better about Win7 (or Vista) is that it sizes the icons better for small hi-res laptop screens. But most of the time I still use WinXP because:
a) it's faster
b) it runs everything without problems
c) I know where all the functions are already (I might appreciate the UI changes in Vista/Win7 more if I had never used Windows before, but to an experienced WinXP user all it does is make it harder to find commonly-used functions that have been moved around)
For the most part the other "improvements" in Vista/Win7 are just duplicates of 3rd-party software for WinXP which I already have.

Whats with the obsession over service packs? Win7 is great as it is, its faster than XP on my laptop, looks nice, and is just as easy (if not easier) to use.

exactly how I feel. Why wait for a service pack when it already runs great. Plus I already got used to all the extra features of windows 7 that going back to xp feels counter productive.
I say it never hurts to try the OS. Use it for the 30 days free period and see if you like it. If not then just stick to xp.

Windows 7 behaves nothing like Windows Vista. ;) From my usage it's much much MUCH more solid and dependable. For me it runs as fast as XP but with a much nicer interface.

But Win7 has the same startup sound as vista...

Well Win 7 is actually listed as NT kerbel 6.1. It really is an update to Vista, as XP was an update to windows 2000. Of course, windows 2000 was fairly stable right out of the box.

Running Win7 on 3 of our computers. They all work great. My PC, where I do 99% of my work, has been running 19days without a reboot. I can't remember XP lasting that long. The last time I had this was with Windows 2000.
Don't wait for SP1, it already runs great.

Running Windows 7 connected to a domain at work. Over here I've got pretty much no issues except with an outdated WSUS server that BSODs Windows 7 x64 clients.

My roommates got a Windows 7 Professional RTM disk and activator that he's using to run on his laptop.
I've already ordered my Windows 7 Professional update disk via Acer since I just bought a new laptop.
If I installed using his RTM disk and activator would it be possible to later use the serial that comes with my Acer disk to make the 7 genuine?
I'm a bit noobish wen it comes to OS' lmao

Yes it should be fine. But for OEM systems there's actually a more fun way ;)
It's pretty easy to do on Vista, and unless they drastically changed activation, I expect it to be the same on 7.

ROFL - It's more like you'll be the only one left behind.
Even the RC is more stable, faster then XP SP3. Unlike Vista, MS finally got it right with W7.

Windows 7 is definitely as fast as XP. I installed it last night onto a Celeron 600, and it handled it really well. The only reason why I got rid of it was that I ran out of storage space (<4GB), but other than that, it handled the computer better than XP.

Umm... not sure why I was singled out lol. Interesting link for the student thing, but apparently i'm not eligible/my school doesn't offer it. But that's okay, MSDN saved the day!

If you have Win7 RC installed, how are you going to install the actual release?
From what I heard, in place upgrading is not a easy task.

I've been running it for a few weeks and it's never crashed. I like it overall but I can't figure out how to share my printer with my girlfriend's Vista laptop. She's got the free upgrade to Win 7 Premium coming, so that should solve it.

You can't upgrade from RC. With RTM and the actual release, you have to do a clean install if you currently have RC.
