Amazon.co.uk has a lot of great sales going on for the fall that just started.

Links to the sales and notables below.

You rarely get dinged from them for customs, as they ship to DHL in Toronto who then ships it to you xpress post. (Most of the time)

Once you checkout, most of your items will be cheaper with the VAT discount. The prices I have below are with today's exchange pre VAT discount.

YMMV of course for everything.

(These are some of the lowest prices I've ever seen them have for box sets.)

It helps that our dollar is doing well. Also, you do save a bunch once VAT is discounted on the order. (Remember, the prices I listed above are all in CAD and not including the VAT discount)

Id be careful before you guys start buying blu-rays as most of them will be region locked. Planet earth is ok and will play in All regions.

Most are NOT region locked, very few companies lock their Blu's. Just do a search before you buy and you'll be fine.

(About half of my Blu collection is import and never had any issues.)

In case anyone is wondering, the Doctor Who series sells on Amazon.ca for $69.99 each + taxes. I'm pick picking up S1-S3, as I already have the Best Buy USA S4 in SteelBook™.

They charge 3.08 Pounds (~- CAD 5.50) for shipping of Planet Earth. I think the total price is about the same as local price CAD 39.99 + taxes. I doubt BB or FS would let Planet Earth goes that low during Giftmas.

They use PAL format in UK, and we use NTSC, so we'll need both a multi-region DVD player and a multi-system TV, non?

TV no, DVD player yes. Most DVD players are multi region, you just need to use the unlock code you can find online or in your players manual.

Also, all computer DVD and Blu players will play DVD's from any region.

I personally use one of two players for DVD's bought outside the country. Either use my Sony multi region one in the living room, or my PC's Blu/HD DVD player which is region free.

total damage about $70, or $14 per movie.

I bought the BBCUK Planet Earth bluray box set from Amazon UK last time it was on sale, and it plays with no problems on my PS3. Region codes should not be a problem.

TV no, DVD player yes. Most DVD players are multi region, you just need to use the unlock code you can find online or in your players manual.
There's region coding (which you can sometimes unlock yourself), but also PAL formats (which you can't unlock). Of course, there are DVD players that are multi region and format.

This one is regulary $100, but has been on sales these past several weeks for $70 in limited quantities.

Links to the sales and notables below.

You rarely get dinged from them for customs, as they ship to DHL in Toronto who then ships it to you xpress post. (Most of the time)

I see the letters DHL and have to add a BIG WARNING here guys.

I ordered a couple of soccer shirts from the UK about 2 years ago, shipped via Royal Mail, as the DHL fee was excessive (4X RM) and previous Mail shipments arrived duty-free. Unfortunately I'd added a couple of cheap calendars to the order which bulked up the shipping envelope a bit. Somebody at Toronto customs (presumably a rival fan) refused admission (for unknown reason) and my order was shipped BACK across the Atlantic. The UK retailer then reshipped my order (at their expense) via DHL, trying to get my order to me ASAP. As it was, it sat in DHL's warehouse over the weekend, so it arrived no quicker than regular Mail anyway. But the real kicker here was that DHL charged not only the shipper their high fees, but also ended up charging me duty (fine) PLUS a similar amount as their processing fee (ripoff). I'm sure my retailer made no money on this transaction, but DHL certainly did. I've sworn off doing business with them ever again. So watch out. Some of you are going to run into DHL's fees, and they'll almost certainly ruin the deal for you. Shame, as I might otherwise have been interested in some of these titles. But if DHL are the only available shipper, that's a deal-killer for me. >:(

As I mentioned in the main post, DHL only works as a middle man, they accept the package and then slap an Xpress Post stick on it for Canada Post to deliver to you.

This is the exact same method Amazon.com uses.

So Amazon.uk are the ones on the hook for all duties? That would definitely make a difference.

But my warning about DHL still stands. Avoid dealing with them (or most other couriers) directly if you can.

Yeah, they pay all taxes and duties for the most part. I haven't had any additional charges from them in years. (Before they used DHL as their middleman)

My haul this time btw:

1 of: T.J.Hooker - Series 1 And 2 [DVD]
1 of: MTV: Beavis & Butt-head Collectors Edition [DVD]
1 of: Pirates Of The Caribbean Trilogy [DVD] [2003]
1 of: The Karate Kid/The Karate Kid Part 2/The Karate Kid Part 3 (Steelbook) [DVD] [1984]
1 of: Rambo - The Complete Collection (1-4 Box Set) [DVD] [1982]
1 of: Valkyrie [Blu-ray] [2008] (BOGO)
1 of: The Mummy 1, 2 & 3 Steelbook Box Set [DVD] [1998]
1 of: Pink Panther 2 [Blu-ray] [2008] (BOGO)
1 of: The Planet of the Apes Collection (6 Disk Box Set) [1968] [DVD]

Yeah sorry i just saw that, drunk from last night and jumped the gun on my reply... lol.

Anyways, i tried adding a couple things to my cart and after the exchange rate and shipping charges, the savings i get compared to buying it at a future SIG electronics or bestbuy/FS sale was negligible. The category i was looking at was the "Buy 1 Get 1 Free". The Matrix Trilogy is also not the Ultimate Edition from what i can tell so i would still rather get it at Costco for $40.

The DVD deals are really good though, if you're still into that kind of thing. I personally will never buy a DVD in my life again :)

I'm only buying up ultra cheap DVD's now, stuff I don't care about buying on Blu, or stuff I know will never be released on Blu.

hmm some decent deals. But since whenever I order from amazon.co.uk i'm 99% guaranteed to get hit with customs, taxes and stuff and sometimes duty.

sometimes it may slip though, but amazon.co.uk is one of the shops that practically guarantees I get hit with charges, unlike some others where I rarely get hit.

Matrix trilogy is just over 20 pounds after shipping. Using a rough exchange rate of 1.80, that'd be around 36ish dollars. Not bad.. but the ultimate set as costco is close to that in price (too bad I don't have a costco membership).

I'm assuming if they're that cheap at costco it'll be just a cheap somewhere else in the near future.

Always YMMV for anything coming from outside of Canada =)

Small orders should be fine.

Yep I know, just saying for me when I place an order at amazon.co.uk and a few other online stores they are almost a guarantee that I get hit customs charges, whereas a few other sites, I hardly ever get hit.

Not saying it will happen with everyone, just in my experience with this store.

As I mentioned in the main post, DHL only works as a middle man, they accept the package and then slap an Xpress Post stick on it for Canada Post to deliver to you.

This is the exact same method Amazon.com uses.

FYI: The last few items I've had from amazon.co.uk (and their marketplace sellers -- check them out as they're often cheaper as the postage is the same) have all been sent individually via Royal Mail 7-10 days delivery. As I ordered 1 DVD per shipment & the prices were less than $20 -- not problems at all with duties. (no dhl involvement)

Are they not just for expedited shipping???

I've ordered in 30 september, y package was sent with "UPS Express SAVER".
Total price in CND (Credit card): $92.79
My package is expected to arrive next Monday (5/10/2009).
I've just called UPS and theu told me that i'll have to pay:
$8.47.
So, it is 9% charges.

By the way, i'm still expecting for a second one from amazon.co.uk too, and this time they send it with "Royal mail" and will take much more time to arrive.

EDIT:
I've just received the second package from Royal mail, no fees or taxes :). So, for a total payment of $170 i've had $10 in taxes.

By the way, last time i ordered from amazon.co.uk everything got flagged at the customs, might consider that as a possible addtional cost.

I just had them ship one of my orders via UPS as well, and I've contacted them and told them it will be refused. They said they will issue a full refund once they receive the product back including shipping costs.

This is the first time they've done this to me, kind of disappointing =(

Even if you chose the standard shipping, they can use UPS or DHL, no one knows which one will be.
I selected Standard shipping, and for one package (half of my order) they use UPS and the second package they use Royal air mail.

Thanks OP for this great deal.
I hope everyone understands that what they paid for "customs" are only Taxes, or even less than that.
No one paid the "real" charges including UPS fees and Duties which are the major problem with UPS. If you only pay for taxes, what's the problem then? it's like you paid the same here.

Amazon.co.uk used for my packege not a UPS standard service, they used "UPS Saver" (2 days shipping). This is the most expensive and fastest service and let you avoid Duties and UPS fees.

So, please can you stop complaining about taxes.

Thanks again for your understanding.

In my case, mine was shipped by DHL. I got hit by taxes (13%) and Canada Post "handling fees" ($5).

You can appeal for the taxes (I did it before). The handling fees are non-refundable because the "handling" already took place regardless.

Ordered Planet Earth and Matrix set from Amazon.co.uk. The total is 42.27 Euros(66.77 CAN). I hope I won't get hit with Custom charge:)

Why did you pay in Euros -- doing a double conversion GBP - EUR - CAD doesn't usually work in your benefit -- but if you placed the order today that price looks drastically better than current GBP - CAD. 42.77GBP would be what I would expect......
(I'm assuming BR -- maybe these were DVD??? )

Regardless...
Remember to check out the Amazon marketplace sellers. In Canada we usually skip them because of the the excessive shipping charge vs free shipping. In this case -- for one set -- the shipping is exactly the same 3.08GBP. I've used several (don't use the sold 10, 50% satisfaction type obviously) and had them arrive at exactly the same time as the regular amazon shipment. The differences in price can be 20% and are more likely with DVD boxsets.

Here's the other catch with Amazon regarding VAT.
If you find an item that says:
Dispatched and sold by amazon.co.uk
Your price will very likely be reduced by 15% (VAT) at check out when shipping to Canada

If you find an item that says something like:
Items for dispatch to UK sold by Amazon's Preferred Merchant
Your item has very probably already had the VAT removed so no more discount.

I've never seen a marketplace price change (though not impossible if offshore)

e.g. Matrix Set BR
sold by amazon's preferred merchant
Amazon Stated Price 16.98GBP
Amazon Final Price 16.98GBP
Amazon Marketplace 15.97GBP

Planet Earth BR
sold by amazon.co.uk
Amazon Stated Price 24.98GBP
Amazon Final Price 21.72GBP
Amazon Marketplace 22.00GBP

Amazon theoretically charges 3.08GBP shipping for the first set and 0.99GBP for each additional set. (Though they can get snippy about the big box sets) Marketplace charges 3.08GBP per set. So you have to balance out the savings vs. shipping.

Marketplace is much more likely to ship via the mail route. The physically smaller your shipment with Amazon is, the more likely that standard shipping will be also via mail. The smaller value your shipment is, particularly if under or around $20, the less likely to get hit by Customs. Splitting may be more cost effective in certain cases.
