The ultra 200 is also on sale for those with more modest softening requirements.
Also qualifies for the home reno tax boondoggle err... rebate - courtesy my kids and other future taxpayers.

Has anyone used this? How is it?
I guess it works for the whole house, as the unit it almost 4 ft tall.
Is this a good buy?

I have a similar sears model about 12 years old. Generally have been happy with it. This is sized at 39000 grain, while a 30000 grain unit at home hardware is on sale for $700 ... so yes, this is a pretty good deal esp. since it comes with installation kit. Some may not like the one tank though ... particularly if they plan on using lower salt grades.
I would also recommend a whole house sediment filter be installed upstream of it.

I have the 200 model for about a year now (lower capacity than this one). Works great for a single family home. A reminder: never buy the sears softeners at full price. Like clockwork, they have these sales. You might have to wait a couple of months. the 800 model ($1500) will be $999 on sale and so on.

Hot deal with that 10% coupon!
The 800 series goes on for about $999 once in a while. This 400 is a great deal, though.

We have the 800 model and it has been working great. I believe the softeners are made by Ecowater. The installer who put it in told me that that some of the Kenmore's softeners were/are prone to tank failure. This apparently has happened to one of my friends.

If you don't buy it online (or on the phone) you will have some difficulty applying the 10% off coupon. Pick up in store is no problem. You will pay $3 handling fee for online/phone orders ...

Nice to know, I may pull the trigger
My question was more of "How big is it" for pick up though
Don't know if I can fit it into a sedan, ha
FYI, the 10% off coupon expires Oct 2, 2009 I believe
As for the water softener sale price expiry, I am not sure...

A agree, definately look into the sediment filter as well. If you're doing it yourself you're only looking at an extra 50.00 or so and it will prolong the life or your water softener and your hot water tank.
Another tip to save on salt... get your external faucets piped seperately from your water softener... your plants and lawn won't care.
