I'm looking for something basic for my niece and I'm currently considering this one for $470: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4692678&CatId=2289

I intend to load XP Pro in place of Vista since there are drivers for XP onthe Lenovo website here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-72514

I know I won't get the free Win7 upgrade but I'm not too concerned about that.

Would I be better off paying $80 more for this one: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4483720&CatId=2289

I'll get an 1gb more ram, 90 gb more hd space, Win7 upgrade, T3400 cpu instead of a T4200.

Any alternative suggestions?

The Lenovo 3000 is crap. I got issued one at work. I ended up buying my own ThinkPad instead.

Buy anything else. Even a cheap HP Pavilion is better.

Just curious ... What kind of issues are you experiencing ? We have a few at work too ...

Poor build quality, battery didn't even last 3 months.

Don't get me wrong, I still have mine, it is a work issued computer. It has been sitting on my desk for 2 years now.

My colleagues, have had the same battery problems. We even had one where the motherboard died, it was replaced under warranty and then a week before the warranty expired, the wireless died.

Thanks for the replies. I've decided to passed on the Lenovo.

Anyone have experience with the Gateway laptops? I see this one at BB for $650 and it seems pretty good: http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0926INGFS10126017&catid=28239
