How does this 730 compare with the 720 which is currently on sale at Wal-Mart Anniv. Sales?
Walmart: 720 for $150
BB/FF PM: 730 can be had for $163 and it has that Advanced Lane Guidance feature

Quote from Best Buy Website:
"should you find a lower advertised price, including those on the internet from an authorized Canadian Dealer, we will match that price and beat it by giving you an additional 10% of the difference."

Sig Electronics is an authorized dealer of TomTom so it shouldn't be a problem price matching. The only difference is they would probably make you use the $199.99 value instead.

I was able to use the $179.99 price ( it's just a cash price) as the match point for Best Buy's discount at the Burlington Best Buy today. They had 2 more 730's after I bought mine. I got the $162 end price, somewhat to the surprise of the customer rep helping me but it's all legitimate. Just stand your ground and you should do fine.

I actually just bought a TomTom 720 @ walmart yesterday for $148.99.

Apparently, you are able to get all the extra features that TomTom 730 has (i.e IQ Routes and Active Lane Guidance).

Seems that only BB has this in store, which is too bad cause i have some FS gift cards that I would love to use to get a gps. BB/FS gift cards can't be redeemed at each others stores by chance?

I returned my 720 to WM and got the 730 for just $12 more.
$12 for not having to futz around with firmware is small price to pay.

you have to saw them flyer or just told them about sigelectronics.com/
because i already buy tomtomgo720 @ walmart yesterday
so i am thinking of returning it and buy 730 from bestbuy.

Fellas...

Seriously... you are paying for just the colour...
TomTom Go 720 at Wal-Mart = $148
TomTom Go 730 at Best-Buy = $163

That's a $15 difference and the hardware is exactly the same.

Out of the box, the TomTom Go 720 does not have ALG (Advanced Lane Guidance) or IQ Routing. In the past, you would have to hack the device and bring it to NavCore version 8 and have a North American version 8 map but that's old school and no longer the case.

If you plug in your TomTom out of the box (I bought one from Wal-Mart two days ago for the father), you would have NavCore 7 and a North American map version 7; therefore, no ALG or IQ Routing functionalities out of the box. TomTom Home updated the firmware to version 8.3xx and I submitted a ticket to TomTom (with the receipt) to get the version 835 map (for the latest map guarantee). It took them less than a few hours to respond to the ticket. Once it was added to my account, the thing downloaded without any hiccups.

My father's device now has NavCore 8 and Map 835. ALG & IQ Routing is working fine and well on this device + everything on the device is legitimate (no hacking). Unless the shell colour is important to you, keep your 720.

So there are two ways of going about this...
(1) This is my favourite option. Phone them toll free @ 1-866-486-6866 and tell them that you just bought your TomTom Go 720 and the TomTom Home program isn't offering you the 835.2419 maps. I think the Go 730 doesn't come with that either.

(2) E-mail them. I have no idea what their e-mail address is.

(3) Submit a ticket - this is what I don't like about TomTom's sites because it's hard to use. What you do is login to your account first (if you created one) and then go to the support site... click on "Car Navigation"... "Select Your Model" and choose TomTom Go 720. "Your question is about..." maps. Once you're done with that jungle, just click on any of the questions and near the bottom of the page it gives you the option of submitting something if the question hasn't been answered by the FAQ. You get to a screen where you can type in your problem. Usually, they will ask you to send in your receipt to them via e-mail as proof but I skip that step by attaching a copy of my receipt to the ticket.

Be aware that they may not respond to your ticket until Monday... not open until then... I love the TomTom devices but I have a thing or two to say about their service.

Do you need an SD card for this or did you use internal memory?

You don't need an SD... I think the map is only 1.6gb.

What I did as well to make room was delete the French and Spanish voices which took up about 40 or 80mb (can't remember). Once you have the device, go into "Manage my device" and delete voices in languages that you'll never use. It'll give you room for mp3s and other stuff.

My father just made a comment about how much he's amazed at the music quality. We took all the songs on his ipod and put it onto an SD card that was 8gb and it sounds wonderful on his car speakers via fm radio.

i just connect go720 to my pc and its update and when i check to my device its says map version 8xxxx.xx so its means it already updated to latest map and i have it iq routes and advance lane guidance on my tomtom go 720?

Click on "Change preferences" and click the right arrow until you're on I think page 3 (can't remember)... do you see an icon that says "Hide lane images"? If it's there on one of these pages (and not grayed out), you have ALG. There's a "Planning preference" area too. It should show the options for IQ routes. If it's there, you have IQ routes.

If none of these are there, you have the latest map but you do not have the latest firmware. Click on the bottom right bar (where the time is) and right above the "Done" button, there's a version tab. It should say version 8 (not 7). If it does, you need TomTom Home to update that for you. It'll ask you sooner or later... if not, time to call your friendly neighbourhood technical support.

See... this is where you're confused... you originally posted that you have map version 8xx.xxxx (which no one usually has fresh out of the box).

You have NavCore 8.351, therefore you *have* the ALG & IQ Routes features capability. You now need the latest map that can display and show you advanced lane guidance. It's a bigger map for sure.

TomTom advertised that they will guarantee you get the latest map within 30 days of purchase. You just need to create an account and then contact support to add the latest map for download to your account. They'll ask you for a fax of the receipt to prove it... that's the pain in the a** I was talking about.

Would you guys recommend this over the Garmin 265WT?

I was able to pick one up for $170 and I've been pleased overall with the device but there are a few issues with it such as the late voice guidance. I was driving on the 401 a few days ago and when I took an exit that split up into two parts, the Garmin only told me which route to take at the very last minute.

From what I've heard, the TomTom tells you well in advance and this has the lane guidance feature that is only available on the higher end TomTom and Garmin's.

Yes I have that same problem with Garmin 755. I will be selling it and I have purchased the 730. I had a TomTom previously and it was much better than the Garmin. The lag is horrible on Garmin - even on city streets. Some joker at Garmin programmed it to give 3 second warning

I purchased the TomTom 720 at WMT and also have a Garmin 750. Did a side by side comparison and found that the TomTom is quicker. I do however prefer Garmin's maps and suction cup holder. Garmin's interface seems easier to use but that is probably just a familiarity issue.

Many thanks to the poster for the map update information.

Best Buy will not pricematch because it is a "Door Crasher" and FS, OOS, say they will not stock anymore, both stores were in Richmond Hill.

If you go to SIG, bring cash, they consider Debit Cards as Credit Cards and you will not get the lower price.

The hardware is the same. Updating to the Navcore 8 application and the Version 8 maps effectively transforms a 720 to a 730, no other files are necessary. The links are at the beginning of this thread, and the info is consistent across the web.
However, some people don't like to tinker and will pay the extra for the 730. Just backup your files.

The rubber part of the suction cup mount that came with my garmin ripped apart from the rest of the mount. I let garmin know of this after it distracted my driving as I was trying to hold it in place while driving. They sent me a new one free of charge. How nice of them to do that?

so if you buy 720 in WM deal don't worry use your latest map guarantee and make your tomtom 720 to 730 and get a lastest map now...

BBY Lansdowne was out of stock but they had the GO 930 priced at 349, same as GO 730.

I just bought the Go 730 from SIG, too lazy to drive to Wal Mart and do the whole update thingy.

Can someone confirm whether GO 730 has 4GB internal memory? Not sure if it's the newer batches that come with 4GB...

You're right. It's $15 not $12. The ridiculous thing too is that most Best Buys and Future Shops will absolutely refuse to price match and the ones that would price match are out of stock. So it's not really a deal. It's a lot of work driving around to the right Future Shop/Best Buys only to walk out empty handed each time.

What's wrong with Wal-Mart? The electronics section in my local Wal-Mart is the least busy section of them all.

It is $15 extra, not $12

I have PMed with Bestbuy (Laval, Montreal) at 194$ ??? They don't accept 179.99$ PM because the shipping fee is 10$, don't know how they calculate but the possibility to return it in 30 days that's really a good point to buy .

By the way, is this one better than the Gamin 255W ? I have purchased the Gamin 255W last july, and have tried during a trip to Toronto, on the 401 highway, with many lanes, it's very bad if you don't have any idea of the 401 configuration. My Gamin 255W had also some bugs, sometimes it could not find the satelite for a long time (but the 255 of my brother was), after the trip I have returned it .

I tried finding a TomTom 720 at my local walmarts in the GVA but no luck. So my only choice left was the 730 for $200

Just PM'ed a Go 730 from BB, final price after tax was $220.

They included shipping in the PM as well.
I wonder if this is worth it?

@ThomasTran
I believe their policy is 14 days for GPS.
btw I think I know you from Mcroberts....lol

You seriously paid $220 for a TomTom 730? Please don't be offended but I'll be honest. I think it's *not* worth it IMHO. I mean, I can understand you paying a $15 premium to get black as your colour but you paid $72!!!

As indicated by another poster, the TomTom Go 720, 730, 920, 930 (etc) all have the same CPU. The one thing that the 920 has over the 720 is that it's 2GB more internal storage. You can pick up 4gb of SD storage from Wal-Mart for $19.99 and your 720 would have even more storage than the 920. The only difference is software and that gets updated by TomTom Home anyway. Your $72 can easily buy you 16GB worth of SD if not 32.

Thanks for the info on how to contact customer support drceo. They have added the newest maps to my account which I plan to update when I get home.

Just out of curiousity, when I update to the newest maps, does that also include the firmware upgrade? I'm currently using map 710.1584 but wasn't able to see what version of Navcore is on it.

hmmm 72 dollars I dont think you did the math right ... walmarts price about 150 before tax, he said 220 with tax. so really its under 50 bucks with the 10% guarntee ... besides walmart is sold out so really the 720 is not an option, well unless they get more stock.

with BB its really YMMV, I was able to price match at the 179 price so I guess it all depends.

trying doing the price match online ... see what they say. you might get lucky and they might match 179 if they dont, just cancel the order

Just saw this thread and people discussing features... fyi, advanced lane guidance is useless in Canada, and only has limited support in the states. This is what i learned on other forums when i was looking at how to hack my 720 to enable ALG. I didnt bother after that.

Bought the Tomtom 720 for $148+tax at WM and updated it to the newest map + firmware. It has all the functions of a TT Go 730 and the best part is that I only paid ~$165 /w tax!!!

How did you update?

I Bought a TomTom Go 720 for $170 including tax at Wal-Mart, but I'm going to return it, so if someone wanna buy it, take it for $170 cash. I will meetup only in downtown Toronto or Scarbia area. I will also include a receipt as well. If noone wants this unit by Saturday, it's going back to Wallyworld

I looked into this because I have a regular GPS and an iPhone with Navigon. As long as the iPhone is mounted, it is legal. Much like it will be illegal to hold a GPS in your hand. There is also an education/warning period, tickets will begin on Feb1/10.

To the people who have received their package.

Did your unit come in a white box that has a TomTom 730 sticker on it? Mine didn't come in a retail package instead I got the refurbished & repackaged TomTom unit... I looked under the warranty and SIG claims Brand new in box - one year manufacture warranty but my unit is a refurb...

Serial # not recognized by TomTom and my Latest Map Guarantee has already expired out of the box.

markmv
Oct 7th, 2009, 10:46 AM
I got mine from the store and it was also in the white box. Then I called to Tomtom they told me that my unit is refurbished (they checked SN) and I have only 90 days of warranty and my new maps quarantine has expired. I returned the device to the store and they replaced the device with another one which is new, but put it in the same old box... so be aware

I have spoke to the Online Store Department - Monica, she promised to get back to me today as they are also investigating this issue with TomTom.

The new TomTom you got, did you check with TomTom to see if it's brand new with 1 year warranty and latest map guarantee?

edit: She wanted me to hang on to the unit until TomTom responds but as per their invoice, I only have (2) TWO days to apply to for exchange... hopefully I don't get burned for taking her words for it.

Picked up the 730 just now from Sig.

It came in a white box similar to the TomTom 330 refurbished product from BestBuy. There was a sticker that indicated it was the 730 on the outside of the box.

The sales rep said there was no return/exchange for the product but if there was anything wrong, I could bring it back within only 15 days. The warranty period on it should be 1 year he had mentioned.

He attempted to assure me that it was a new product and that they didn't receive back old products as they "always sell products new".

Take that for what it's worth.

She offered me TomTom Tech support toll-free number to call for verification. I called and asked for condition verification and TomTom tech support ran the serial # check twice and both times it came up Refurbished. The rep even gave me my manufactured date, June 2008.

Monica from SIG was very helpful but it's not cool to sell refurbished units as new ... I would have never bought this in the first place had there been a "refurbished" label.

Like everyone else, I couldn't get a latest map update as it says it's expired.

My biggest gripe is wondering if there even is a warranty period on this or not. That's my biggest fear.

My receipt says "no refund/exchange"...I'm quite apprehensive about this as I've always thought they had refunds with the exception of a restocking fee and such.

Called TomTom.

They asked for a copy of my receipt to verify date of purchase. There's no indication that the product is refurbished on the receipt so they are not giving me a 1 year warranty from date of purchase and the Latest Map Guarantee for 30 days.

The unit itself may still be refurbished but I'll just have to hope it doesn't crap out after the 1 year warranty. For $180, not too bad.

SIG actually arranged for a pick up, according to SIG, TomTom screwed up but I am not going to guess who is lying... as long as my unit gets replaced.

Make sure you talk to TomTom first and get confirmation that your unit is indeed refurb and then ask SIG to replace it as they claimed it's a brand new unit (make sure you grab TomTom Rep's name).

On a side note: for those wondering about their warranty, since SIG does not say refurb on the receipt you are actually entitled to ONE year of coverage as per TomTom Support Rep. HOWEVER, I would get the GPS replaced. The unit is new as per SIG but in TomTom's system your unit is refurb hence there is a chance that you won't be covered should you run into any problem requiring RMA.
