Is there any converter/adapter that can be used and still fits within the laptop? I want to upgrade my old laptop with a bigger drive and SATA seems to be a lot cheaper than old PATA and it's easier to find too, TIA.

The short answer is no. However, if your laptop is very old and has wiggle room in your laptop then you could try adding a SATA adapter.
You could also consider modding it for SSD or SDHC flash mem.
