The price is okay is it a refurbished?? I would advise not to get laptops with a amd cpu inside as they seem to generally run hotter or use more energy.

I presume it's the one on the front page of the flyer? It's $400 for a brand-new laptop, I'm not sure what else you can expect at this price point. At least it has 3GB RAM, so Vista (Basic?) will run ok.

AMD's are also much cheaper than Intel, which is why they're favored in budget laptops to begin with. I doubt the battery in this thing is anything to write home about anyways, and there are other factors like hard drive efficiency (again, probably not the best in a budget model), so the processor brand is hardly a deciding factor in this case, unless there's a comparable model out there with an Intel CPU for the same price.

I'm thinking this computer is a single core processor. My local WM doesn't appear to have it (at least, didn't see any at 7am).

While at WM for the Quaker State and Gatorade, I picked one up - gift for mom. It has "Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit" which according to the Acer website, allows for the "free" Windows 7 upgrade. I checked, the Aspire 5517 series is eligible (http://www.acer.com/windows7upgrade/eligible.html). The exact model on this one is 5517-5435. Strange that is it not listed on the Products - Notebooks (http://www.acer.ca/acer/product.do?link=oln85e.redirect&changedAlts=&kcond48e.c2att101=-1&CRC=2759084358) page - Walmart special?

The CPU is "AMD Athlon 64 processor TF-20" (1.6 GHz, 512 KB L2 cache).

So worried about the Windows 7 entitlement that I fogot to check for a modem, none, so it will go back unopened :( unless bro wants to buy it out.

Modem? What do you need that for, you/he on dial-up?

Yes, unfortunately she is. Light user, mostly e-mail and photos. I know I can get an external one, but there will be better deals towards Boxing Day with one onboard. I hope.

No modem? First I've ever heard of a laptop without one. Granted dial-up isn't as common as it used to be, but business users still use them, esp. when traveling overseas. Not to insult your intelligence, but are you sure you checked all the sides? It might be hidden behind a cover on the back side.

some of the newer models do not have a modem; i just got an asus and it has a whole array of connections with the exception of a modem connection;

maybe its to save some bucks? and make it more useful since fewer people use modems...??

Not hidden, not there, no modem.

Full refund.

Too bad my mom can't get Teksavvy at her #. I'd spring for that, but not the rip-off plans from Rogers.

Hi, I also bought one at Vaughn WM as it looked to me nice deal, but they did not have open Piece to check the available options and associate was not aware of what's in the box, but after checking some of the reviews online I am wondering if I want to keep it or not (I have not yet opened the box), but since webcame & DVD writer is a must for me, I am wondering if anybody can update me on this (who has opened the box), if these things are there or not. I also heared AMD processors are prone to overheating, is it right? I know in 400 buck you can not get the best one, but I am willing to spend 100 or 200 more to get a reasonable one.
Any suggestion will be highly appreciated, as I need to return this in 7 days if I do not want to keep this.
Thanks

Maybe with some luck, WM employees will screw up and start selling $800 Acers thinking they're "all the same" like they did when I bought mine two years ago for $320. And yeah, they do overheat! And the fan starts going after a year.

The label on the outside of the box will tell you that there is no web cam on this unit. It has a DVD writer, see link (http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/notebook/2009/acer/aspire/Aspire5517/Aspire5517sp2.shtml).

Just a heads up on the above one from The Source; it has Vista Home Basic, which will not entitle you to Windows 7 per Acer (http://www.acer.com/windows7upgrade/index.html).
