I'd like to buy a new computer in the next few weeks and of course I want Windows 7.

I'm looking for opinions and thoughts from the RFD community as to whether computers with W7 will be priced higher than similar Vista computers simply because they have W7?

I'm debating whether I should buy a new Vista PC now and just do the W7 upgrade option when it becomes available. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

PCs bundled with Windows 7 probably are more expensive only because they are more recent, up-to-date models, with better specifications. I would think it would be cheaper to buy a new PC with W7 than buying Windows 7 separately if the computers have the same or simillar internal components.

Buying a new PC with windows vista and then upgrading to windows 7 might be redundant if you can get an alike new pc with windows 7 pre-installed. Some stores may try to clear out older Vista computers to make room for W7 PCs.

I skipped over upgrading to Vista and still use XP so I pre-ordered a Windows 7 update instead.

It won't increase by much thanks to Linux playing a huge role in Netbook.

There won't be any difference. Don't forget that from many retailers, you'll be eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 7 from Vista if you buy from now until January 31st, 2010. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/offers/upgrade.aspx

Only problem is that the FREE Windows 7 'DVD' that they send you is $50. Cash grab.

Not really. If you look at the manufactures participating, most are free, and only two (one msi) charges $15 for shipping.

I say you will start seeing deals on the vista laptops right now, but they won't any sales on Windows 7 PC's for a while.

I'm sure many people are holding out their purchases for windows 7 and stores knows this as well.

If you can legally access MSDNAA or TechNet Plus today, you can download Windows 7 way before the General Availability date.

Note: MSDNAA and TechNet Plus are services provided by Microsoft which lets you download pretty much anything from them legally, provided you don't use it for commercial purposes.

Yes.

1. To get the upgrade, you need to buy Vista Home Premium for an extra $45-50. That's $45-50 you won't have to spend if you wait.

2. The freshly installed operating system is likely to work better than a new operating system installed over an old one.

3. Some places are charging a fee for the "free upgrade."

It's no-brainer. Wait, unless there is some extraordinary deal.

Agreed with the last point: Some places are charging a fee for the "free upgrade". When Microsoft said they were giving out MCE 2005 as a free upgrade, Sony charged people $19USD just to ship out the DVD when I realized that MCE2005 just only changed the data inside the CAB file.
