Anyone know how this compares to the TCP50S1 from FS or the TC-50PS14 from Costco?

The S1 has the Neo PDP panels, which the U1 doesn't, they are more energy efficient, have better black levels, and are brighter. The U1 also lacks the anti reflective coating on the screen, and so reflection might be more of an issue depending on the situation. That's not to say that the U1 is poor in these aspects in comparisson to other similar displays, it's just that the S1's are better, IMO.

Best Buy has the 42U1 also at $999. There you can use the PP coupon or code for $100 off, and possibly the Flat Panel In Stock Guarantee for another $50 off and free delivery.YMMV though.
They don't have the 50U1 unfortunately.

U1 is alright.. if I remember right, it's 2 models behind the current G10 (the S1 is in-between)
As one poster above mentioned, the neopdp and anti-glare coating are a couple key differences.. if you feel inclined to wait til xmas, you might be able to get a good deal on the S1's.. the G10's are selling like hotcakes around my area

The 42U1 has been at $999? The 42C1 has been at that price. To my knowledge this is the first time the 42U1 has gone sub $1K.

I finally bit the bullet and bought my first big tv today. Got a Panny tcp42s1, for around 1120 before taxes & enviro crap. Bought locally at an audiotronic store in Kelowna.
The thing with future shop is they don't even carry the 42s1 locally and want you to do a web order, guess who just lost my business:) for this transaction.
Would rather support someone local then the big chains for some of these big ticket items if they can give you a good deal.

How does this compare to the Pioneer Kuro?
Simple :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:
For example, the lack of true 24p(not2:3), made me look away from affordable (budget) plasmas. And yes, the Kuro does support it

Both the 42C1 and 42U1 were the same price at the time....don't ask me why.

The S is a step up from the U
U is the bottom of the barrel entry level plasma from Panasonic. it's completely barebones and it doesn't have an AR filter making it basically useless in a lit environment
S is the next step up. however the 50S1 will cost you $2k up here(way overpriced imo)
next up from that is the G10 which retails for $2500(however u can get it much cheaper at best buy/fs if you haggle) and then the v10 which is the plasma both performance wise and in style of the year but it carries a hefty $2700 retail price
I have the 50g10 myself. I think it's the perfect performance/price tv

I have the u series 42" and I would hardly call it barebones. Yes the screen if very reflective in a lit environment but it' $999 plasma what do you expect;) For the price this TV is awesome and has everything anyone would need. I would recommend it to anyone over a LCD for the same price. I mean most people can't afford $2500 on a TV and If that's what I have to pay to have some anti reflective glass it ain't worth it. I'm sure the 50" is great TV as well but if it's going somewhere with a lot of light you should look at upgrading to a higher model.

well.. ya even the barebones plasma from panasonic destroys most LCDs :D:razz:
You can get the 50g10 for $1800 off the amazon marketplace. Personally I feel it's worth the extra $300 to get the AR coating and THX mode
Certainly for 42" screens though you'd be hard pressed to find a better deal than the U1 at $999
<1k for a 1080p plasma is almost unheard of in Canada

I find there is a significant difference between the U and S but not between the S and G. The S isn't worth 2000 that you have to pay over here, but it is worth the extra time and savings to get it from the states. You get a way better TV and save a couple hundred.
"doesn't have an AR filter making it basically useless in a lit environment"
That's why I wouldn't purchase the U.

THX mode makes a HUGE difference between the two
I'd say the difference between U and S is minimal since there is no real picture quality differences. The only difference is the AR coating

44/50 for the g10
37/50 for the s1

This seems like a good deal indeed.
Too bad RFD is boycotting FS so no one here will take advantage of this sale.
ops! Wait a minute...its not RFD boycotting FS..its only 2-3 funny folks that post in every thread about FS begging everyone to boycott them.

I misinterpreted your previous post, when you said you got one, I thought you meant now, not a month ago, sorry. Obviously then, I missed a past sale price on the U1. I hate when that happens.

GOD its so hard to compare tvs
This will be our first plasma/bigscreen purchase and its pretty difficult.
We were at East Hamilton Radio and the guy was showing us a Samsung PN50B550 50" Plasma on sale for the same price as FS' Panasonic here on sale. ($1499)
The specs don't say very much, and no one else (that I can find) carries that samsung to compare prices. How am I suppose to chose?

2001 Audio Video carries the PN50B550, it's in their flyer this week at $1477.
If it helps any, one factor will be your room, if it's really bright, with uncontrolable glare, lots of windows, poor blinds etc., then the U1 with it's lack of an anti glare coating might not be the best choice for you. The B550, which does have this, would handle this situation better. On the other hand a lot of the Samsung plasmas this year have an achilles heel. They buzz. Whether the PN50B550 is affected, and what the chances are of getting one that does, I can't say. Otherwise they are nice displays.
