Are these bad or something? I bought one for each of our laptops for travel, used one of them with no issues (these are actually perfect for my purposes) and was wondering what your "corrupted data" comment referred to?

The specs for twisted pair ethernet require, well... twisted pair.

Heck, when you're punching down a patch panel, you're not even supposed to undo more than one twist!

While I'm sure there's some lovely hacks out there what will somehow allow a flat cable to pass CAT5e specs, I can't imagine this cable has them. And I still can't imagine trusting their hacks work in the real world, either.

Luckily, TCP has checksums, so you're mostly OK, bad packets should just get retransmitted. Ethernet does, too, although its not impossible for a bad packet to cause issues.

These are available in Ottawa dollarama stores too...

If they were about 3x longer they would be useful. I have a 15' ethernet cable that lives in my luggage and its barely long enough for most hotel rooms. Also most hotels that dont have wireless offer loaner cables at the front desk.

English plz.

He's saying that these are not CAT5e, CAT5, or CAT anything compliant, and that they'll likely result in very slow transfer speeds, assuming you don't just get data corruption instead.

I don't know about these specific cables, but flat Ethernet can support it:

Features & Applications... ...Similar to flat satin or ribbon cable, but these cables have twisted pairs

:)

I've seen these retractable things. It's made from rubbery ribbon cable with RJ-45 ends crimped and glued on.
