They had this a few months ago, if you apply for the Sony MBNA mastercard by October 15, and have your first spend by December 15 you will get 10,000 sony points, which is good for $100 of Sony merchandise. This can be used on sonystyles.ca, or by sending in a rebate form for a sony purchase made elsewhere. It says it takes 8-10 weeks for the points to credit, but it showed up on my 1st statement after my purchase.
There are 2 ways to do this apply for a new card here:
https://wwwa.applyonlinenow.com/CACCapp/Ctl/entry?sc=cghx&lc=en_CA
or if you already have a card call MBNA, and ask them to split your credit limit to a new card and use offer code CGHX to get the 10,000 points. This is the way I did it so I know it works.
Just a note to redeem the points directly on a sonystyle.ca purchase they need to equeal at leas 50% of the cost of your purchase after taxes, or you will still have to send in the rebate for. I know because I thought I had enough points, but once they added the tax I had less than 50% so I couldn't do an automatic redemption. I called and they verified that I would need to send a redemption form.

I did get my credit card a week ago and in the letter it said that I will get only 2000 points for making first purchase. I called in to cancel and the lady said according to my account I will get 10000 plus 2000 points for making first purchase. It has no annual fees so it doesnt hurt to try.

Didn't Sony offer credit cards before and then cancel them? I remember once when I was in the Sony store they had a sign posted saying that they were no longer accepting them.

Sony changed credit card a lot of times, they are now with MBNA.
MBNA/Sony had a similar promo in June 2009, I did take advantage of this (just used my points to purchase a $69.99 game + $24.99 blu-ray remote for PS3)
Few info you need to know:
1) Sony points can be used online at sonystyle.ca, can be used to pay tax on an item (items will still be taxed) and must be used for a least 50% of the purchase price of item as stated in the op (so no go for PS3)
2) I was not able to use Sony points directly (without claim form) in Sony Style store. I was told "no go". YMMV.
3) You can use Sony Style points in any store (Sony authorized dealer) by using your MBNA Sony card to pay and submit a claim form ($3.50 fee, 6-8 weeks delay for reinbursement, $25 minimum purchase): can be worth it if a store has a deal on a Sony item that makes it worth it to pay $3.50 to get it from that store instead of regular-price-all-the-time-Sony-Style. this would permit to use your points on aPS3 purchase (unlike online purchases at Sonystyle.ca with their 50% minimum price paid with points)
4) Delays you can expect:
"To qualify, your application for the card must be received by October 15, 2009, and the transaction date must occur on or before December 15, 2009"
- 2-3 weeks to get the card after you apply
- make your first purchase when you get the card (purchase a pack of gum if you want!)
- 1 month waiting for the statements (points are issued when statement is posted, MBNA says 8 week delay, but in my experience points are posted each month including the bonus).
TOTAL: 1.5-2 months
5) If you already have a MBNA account, you can call MBNA customer service and ask to use $500-$1000 of your current credit limit on one of your cards and do a "split" to get a Sony MBNA card (advantage: no hard credit hit on your credit score, but the Sony Card will still appear in the list of accounts). Specify priority code cghx and confirm with the rep you want 10,000 points (stated in the op, but emphasized, the rep will not do it for you if you don't guide him/her
Therefore, applying now should allow you to use your points about end of November if you make purchase in your 1st month with the card.
I plan to cancel my Sony MBNA account and open a new one to use this promo again: nice stuff!!!

Does canceling the credit card affect your credit score? Thanks.
1) Applying to the card (if you do not have already a MBNA card and use the "split a credit card limit into a new card method" I described in my post) shall reduce your score because of a hard credit hit.
2) Cancelling the card in 2-3 months (after using your points) should increase your score because it will increase the average age of your accounts (your average age will go up when you get rid of a new account).
Total effect: ? (depends, exact formula to calculate score is unknown).
If you do not need a mortgage renewal/negotiation soon, I think $100 is worth to have a small hit on your credit score (and almost no hit if you already have MBNA product).
Credit score is not that important, great promos are there to be used!

Good job OP, I really like this deal. I want to get a PS3 Slim, is this the best way?
1. I get another MBNA card split and sent to me in the mail.
2. Arrives in mail, buy pack of gum at SonyStore.
3. Wait for end of month statement, 10,000 sony points will be on statement
4. Purchase PS3 at Sonystore.
5. Send in rebate forms to MBNA
6. Get $100 off statement??

Comments about your plan Jungle:
1) exact
2) you can buy anything at any store, not only Sony Style store
3) exact
4-5) you can purchase your PS3 in other stores than Sony Style, by using only the MBNA Sony card (better call MBNA to make sure what is their Sony authorized dealer definition, you could take advantage of a deal somewhere (FS/BB/EB fore xample) if a deal happens in 1-2 months)
6) yes, MBNA shall credit the $100 on your account 6-8 weeks after you submit your claim form.

Ok, so I called MBNA, only to be put on hold for a total of 25 minutes, due to "high caller volume."(lack of staffing IMO)
A lady answered and aske me if I had a sony points account number? She was not sure if I needone first, before she sends the new card out.
Long story short, she put me on hold for another 10 minutes and I hung up as I had to go. I'll call back later.
Can anyone clarifiy if you need an account with Sonystore first for these points?

Yes, you can split it.
I just got off the phone and had this card (Sony MC) split from my SPG card (which is being phased out anyway in 2010).
CSR said it should receive it in 7-10 days. I forgot to ask who "authorized sony retailers" are. If anyone phones, ask and chime back in!
Thanks for the deal OP.

Hey guys, definitely interested to go for this promo. I only have $1500 credit on my Smart Cash right now though. Is it better to just increase the limit and then split to this card, or just apply for the card directly? I'm not planning to get a mortgage or line of credit anytime soon.
Also, are we allowed to transfer Sony points between accounts? If that's possible, and if both me and my parents each get one, there's my free PS3 :)
Lastly, does SonyStyle.ca charge shipping?

No, when you activate the card with that number on the sticker, it's only for them to transfer your call so they can up-sell you on useless insurance features that cost extra money. Always say no when they sell you that crap, then tell them to never phone you trying to re-sell it again.

Well, at this point in the thread, the only "authorized store" that can be confirmed, is Sonystore or Sonystyle.
And the claim form is submitted to MBNA, not Sony. Here is the link for the claim form.

The code for 10,000 points is CGMX. I learned this the hard way. Tried to apply online but some kind of glitch stopped the process before completion. Phoned a few 1-800 #s and got no joy just went round in circles. They found the code and phoned me back. By that time I'd got the online form filled and accepted. I phoned to make sure it had gone through and it had and the card is on its way. Hope it was worth the hassle.

Just gave them another call to find out what authorised dealers they accept and was told anyone who sells Sony products is fine --- BB, FS ,WM etc.
Could anyone tell me, does your first purchase qualify for the points? Can I just go buy a PS3 and get the points taken off the price or do they then go on the card and I send it in to get cash put on the card. Someone mentioned getting a stick of gum as their first purchase and then getting the points. Sorry, as you can tell I'm a bit confused on this.
Thanks

If you are going to make a PS3 your 1st purchase you will have to send in a form to get the cash back once your points have posted. However I do not know if you have to have the points available before the purchase. I bought some bus tickets 1st, waited for my 1st statement to show my 10,000 points than bought the ps3, I just have to remember to drop the form in the mail now. This is probable the safest way. It might be fine to have your 1st purchase be the item you want to redeem your points against, but I don't know for sure.

It is.
CGMX connects to some ZOOMER card that gives you 1% cash back, plus registration in something called "Best Doctors Services" which apparently helps you and your doctor get a second opinion on medical diagnosis and treatment options. Never heard of this card. This is the link (https://wwwa.applyonlinenow.com/CACCapp/Ctl/entry?sc=cgmx&lc=en_CA) with the incorrect code in case your curious.

Read them their own terms for the card, clearly states that it's also for existing cardholders who qualify for an additional account...
†† This is a one-time offer for new Sony Card credit cardholders, or existing cardholders who qualify for an additional Account. To qualify for this offer, cardholders must use their account for at least one Purchase or Cash Advance (as such capitalized terms are defined in the Account Agreement) transaction. To qualify, your application for the card must be received by October 15, 2009, and the transaction date must occur on or before December 15, 2009. Please allow 8-10 weeks from the first transaction date for the bonus points to be posted to your Sony Points account. Limit one-time 10,000 bonus point offer (no cash value) per new Account. This promotion is offered by MBNA Canada Bank. Inquiries regarding this promotion will not be considered beyond April 30, 2010.

Ok, called again. This time the CSR was willing to do the application, but said they'll have to do a credit check for any new account, even for existing account holders.
For those who split from your existing MBNA accounts, did you get the credit check? Not that mattered too much for me, but if that's the case, then it'll be easier just to apply on-line.

This insistance to credit check is a nuisance. I got 2 Amex Small Business Gold and 1 MBNA credit check in the last +- 6 months because of all good promos.
I was able to get a credit split without credit hit (I saw my report as of Sept 09) for last promo in June 09, maybe they changed the rules

Rep assured me when I called in before that it was 10000 on my account. Pamphlet probably said 2000 because it's the standard amount, and 10000 was a promotional amount. It would be wasteful to print two sets of brochures wouldn't it? ;)

Yes, but I would rather not pay interest. $300 + tax = $339
19.9% per annum = 0.04972% per day, compounded daily.
4-6 weeks to credit your account, assume 30 days = 1.5024% = ~$5.09

4-6 weeks to credit your account, assume 30 days = 1.5024% = ~$5.09
$5.09 is enough for a light lunch!
Can't you just leave only 96.50 so the rebate will cover the final payment and pay the rest off?

It's now the 18th day so, I called them up. At first, the CSR could not find the application, to check the status. He put me on hold for several minutes, then askes all my personal information again. Now he says he can't even find anything in his system in regards to me. I explained that they split the credit from my SPG on Sept 27. He puts me on hold again for several minutes, comes back and says he found it on "another system." He says it was approved and mailed out Oct 13.
HMM which deal to use to buy PS3? Staples coupons, EB games trade or zellers deal?
I plan on getting it from HDTV. I know they can beat Staple's $260 price and it's the only place that would be willing to beat prices.

Good for you. It has now been 18 days today since I applied for this card. That means I have to wait even longer for the points redemption once I buy my $0.17 timbit.
The CSR said I would receive i in 7-10 days. Now add that fuel to the fire of waiting for the smart cash cheques to come in.. MBNA has it's ups and downs.
I will be sending them a follow up call tomorrow.
lol
hm so i applied online. how long does it take for it to go through?
andd lets say i use my first purchase at futureshop with a 15 off 150 coupon i just mail in my rebat and get 100 back?
or do i need to buy something small get the points then mail in the rebate
Call them and make sure they have your application. Like other posters, the CSR could not find their application so i just re-applied over the phone. i applied online and received no notification. so just do i tover the phone

[QUOTE=cashinstinct;9488639]3) You can use Sony Style points in any store (Sony authorized dealer) by using your MBNA Sony card to pay and submit a claim form ($3.50 fee, 6-8 weeks delay for reinbursement, $25 minimum purchase): can be worth it if a store has a deal on a Sony item that makes it worth it to pay $3.50 to get it from that store instead of regular-price-all-the-time-Sony-Style. this would permit to use your points on aPS3 purchase (unlike online purchases at Sonystyle.ca with their 50% minimum price paid with points) [/qoute]
Just trying to think of ways to make this credit go faster. Could you submit the MBNA claim form while you are waiting for your points to show up on a statement?
For example:
1. Get card on first day and buy pack of gum (wait 4-6 weeks for points on first statement)
2. Same day, submit claim form to MBNA for $100 re-imbursement (wait 6-8 weeks for re-imbursement)
3. Thirty days later, buy PS3 and hope points get reimbursed, pay $200ish so no interest is on statement.
Thoughts?

No. You have to have purchased the item before you can submit the claim form. Otherwise, you could just cash out points.

It's not on the Sony site. It's probably some internal promotion that's not supposed to be released to the public. You're being a bit paranoid here. You are, after all, dealing with MBNA, and not Sony here.

FYI for those who may be in my shoes...
I received my Sony MC today, and there is a slip of paper in there that says you get 2,000 points on your first purchase.
I applied using the online form with CGHX, so that doesn't make sense.
I called in to cancel, and the first customer rep (who said I only get 2,000 points) transferred me to a senior customer rep.
I explained the situation to the senior customer rep and she assured me that my account says that I will get 10,000 points upon my first purchase.
So I guess you can't really rely on the package that you receive to determine. If you really want to make sure, just call in and ask.
Yay $100 sony credit! :D

if the cs you were talking about is the number you called to activate your card, they know nothing about the promo. the will tell you that you will get 2k pts only. try the number at the back of your cc and they will likely know about it. however, i think it only works after your first transaction has been posted. still better than waiting for your first statement.

Sort of off topic ...
But, which PS3 has the best bang for the buck (from Staples)? I'm not all that familiar with the PS3 and pricing.
I got the 250gb ps3. I now need to mail in the receipt to get my $100 credit.

There are some nice coupons on the Sony Style website here (http://www.sonystyle.ca/commerce/servlet/StaticView?storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&contentpage=../html/temp/NPSevent/NPS_event_eng.html) including $25 off a minimum $50 purchase (excluding playstation products and some other things). There's a RFD thread discussing it here (http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/sony-store-coupons-25-off-50-more-814398/). A bunch of people managed to get games with it yesterday though their orders may yet be canceled. The coupon is not working online now even for legitimate purchases but this may yet be fixed and you should still be able to use it in a Sony Store.

1) Is the point attached to the card (so that you don't have to apply for a seperate reward program, and if you cancel the card it is gone)
2) can you claim PS3 game with it?

I haven't received my card yet, but I know it's been authorized. They sent me an adress confirmation form because I just moved a few months ago and they wanted to be sure it was me I guess. Can I buy the PS3 at RCSS and apply the points once I have the card with the points? Or do I have to buy it with that card specifically?

Does anyone know how to find a list of authorized retailers?
I, too, would like to use it on the RCSS deal, but don't know if they count. Perhaps find out by calling in?
Cheers.

Nevermind, checked on the previous page and saw where a guy linked to a site where you can check for a list of authorized retailers. Thanks.

According to this search (http://locator.sony.ca/GetDivFcodes.jsp?DIVISION=AVIT&LANG_ID=-1) using the perimeters Toronto, Ontario (in the City, Province search), Blockbuster comes under numerous of the Sony product searches.

Can someone who got the points please confirm: do you need to make your first purchase a Sony product of over $50 in value (as I believe it said), or can it be anything?
The reason I ask is I was originally going to use the card to buy the PS3, but I might instead use it to buy some PS3 games. Want to make sure the games will be okay.

It's been confirmed a few times in this thread that your first purchase can be anything of any value. I bought a strip of bus tickets, than waited for my points on my first statement, than redeemed.

Do you think I can still get in on this? It says only by October 15, but it also says that you can't talk to them about it past April 2010, meaning you could beforehand.
I just called and used the OP's code and asked to verify the 10,000 points. I'll be getting the card.

Where did you see this? For the credit form it says minimum $25 purchase for redemption and I think this applies to purchases through the website as well. I don't recall seeing $50 anywhere.

If anybody is following the other thread the $25 off coupon has been accepted in B&M Sony stores and it has been accepted for PS3 items. If this is what you're after you could have yourself some good deals though you'll have to do separate transactions for each coupon. Also keep in mind there will probably be a $3.50 processing fee for each receipt (for points redemption). I'm not after PS3 things but I think I'll take a look in a Sony Store yet.

Lady mentioned nothing about points, so I asked "don't I get 10,000 points after my first qualifying purchase?". She asked and told me yes. I'm 95% sure that she repeated the 10,000 points back. I'm 100% sure she didn't mention 2,000 points. I guess there's a 5% chance that she said "the points". :D I'll verify when I get my card and have to activate it.
