Considering whether this system is a worthwhile buy @ $800 flat, or if I should just upgrade my current machine's Mobo, CPU, and RAM. I'm currently running an AMD 64 3200+ with 1GB of DDR RAM. (Used to have double that, but had to replace old mobo with a cheapie.) Current video card is a decent 8800GS, though.

For $800:

- AMD Athlon64 X2 5200+ DualCore CPU
- ASUS M2N-E Motherboard
- 4Gb Kingston DDR2-667 RAM
- 250Gb Western Digital SATA-II HDD (Primary, OS)
- 500Gb Western Digital SATA-II HDD (Secondary, Storage)
- 2x Pioneer DVR-112 IDE DVDRW
- ASUS nVidia GeForce 8600GT 256Mb Dual DVI-Out
- D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G DWL-G520 Wireless PCI Card
- CoolerMaster iTower 930 case + Power Supply
- Logitech MX5000 Bluetooth Keyboard + Mouse
- Logitech QuickCam Communicator Webcam

Obviously, a definite upgrade for me. But good value? My 8800GS is as good or better than the 8600GT, isn't it? DVD-RW is a throwaway. Wireless card, bluetooth keyboard/mouse, and webcam are all bonuses, but I don't require them. Would be nice to have my current PC as a backup/multimedia box, though. And if this is good value for the money, I'm tempted to go for it.

Your advice is appreciated! I've been out of computers too long to know what I'm doing.

Personal opinion,
No.

For $800? is that a joke? Its worth no more then $300 and that's only because of the bluetooth keyboard/mouse which most people won't card much about. You really have been out of the computer game for too long my friend.

You can buy the cheapest new dual core CPU, motherboard and RAM for probably less then $160 and it'll be faster then that system. And yes your 8800GS video card is better then the 8600GT.

Wow. Hell no to that. You could probably get something a lot more current for that. I'd build a sample for you but I'm too bloody tired (almost 4AM).

I'd say no, better to start off from scratch. At least that way you'll have plenty of warranty left and better hardware then the one posted.

to be honest, you should always build your own PC if you have the knowledge in doing so, otherwise you'll end up with PC that you will never fully use.

Forget that "$800" system ;)

Can you list what you are having right now ? Is your existing 8800GS serving you well ?

$800 can upgrade you to a very powerful system (yes, much better than X2 5200+), especially if you don't need a new video card ...

As requested, here (http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?p=9478007#post9478007) are my current specs and what I might like to get out of an upgrade. For clarity's sake, I started a whole new thread considering the volume of threads that go through this forum. Note that I'd ideally like to spend less than $800 on an upgrade, as an upgrade might require me to (or just make me want to) upgrade my OS, PSU, and HD as well.

Thanks very much for your input!
