I feel sorry for all those who have been selling their 4890 cards for $180-200. Initially we thought the 5870 could be had in the $300-350 range so there was a firesale of 4870 and 4890 cards on the forum. Now all those people who sold know that the money they got was too little and they must add significant new cash to get a 5870. :cheesygri

Thanks SB for the prices.
Question: Anyone think that I should go get a used 285/4890 (~$200) instead of the new 58xx cards, or wait till the GT300s come out hoping for some price competition? I'm currently using a 4770 so I'm itching for an upgrade.

5850 I think be a good match. Depending on the rest of your system.

Looks great preformancewise, I'm shure it be more attractive if they kept it under the $399 cnd price point. Still no pricing on the eyevision one nor the 2 gigger.
The only problem I have is that takes the resell value of a card like mine or even the 4890 & puts it down the crapper. :|

Your talking like that's a bad thing those. Considering the lack of direct x11 titles, this means you can get a 5870 performance for about 140 dollars by picking up another 4870, since the 5870 is just about as fast as a 4870x2.
I am waiting for the gt300 before I pick up a 5870x2, the 5870 is slower than my current setup of what is essentially 4890x3.

Hey Silver Bullet, looks like the pricing DID change :cheesygri $379 for 5870 and $259 for 5850!! That's pretty reasonable for the performance you're getting!
P.S. NCIX is ripping everyone off! WTF $450!! NewEgg has it listed for $405!
I think Anand summed it up nice for people looking to upgrade:
Moving away from performance, we have feature differentiation. AMD has a clear advantage here with DirectX11, as the 5870 is going to be a very future-proof card. The 8800GTX is a good parallel here – it took 3 years for it to really be outclassed in terms of features, and the performance is still respectable today
Plus on top of this you get Eyefinity as well as OpenCL acceleration through your whole platform (CPU+GPU) which could soon open up some crazy applications!

Will the 5870x2 have 2gb or 4gb of gddr5? what's the rumoured price? I can wait for nvidia's answer, my 2x GTX 260 216 setup still holds up enough for me. I have a feeling I'll be going with ati this time though I prefer nvidia normally because I prefer evga and their drivers.

IMO if you have an 4870 X2 or 4870/4790 in CF then you should be just fine to wait it out till the end of the year to see how the GT300/5890X2 does. If you're running a single card then maybe worth the jump, just don't be surprised if you see a $50/100 price drop when the GT300's come out at the end of the year.

I'm in this boat. I'd be willing to take a 4870 or 4890 (or a reasonably equivalent nvidia card) off of someone's hands, in GVR preferably. PM if interested.

i'm so disapointed with the 5870 benchmarks. it basically performs on par with the gtx295 but costs $100 less. all nvidia has to do is just price drop to get back into the market again.

The performance could be due to lack of proper drivers. If the drivers for the 5870 were as good as the 295, then you'd be seeing the difference.

Agreed. I was reading some of the reviews last night and it seems in the best case scenario, at a crazy high resolution like 2560 x 1600 the 5870 only gives you a 50% advantage over the 4890. This is very disappointing considering on paper the 5870 should be about 100% faster...
Drivers will probably help those numbers over the next few releases but still.

It's a shame that the reviews don't compare the 5870 with 4890's in crossfire!
This would help a lot of us decide whether or not to sell our 4890 and get a 5870, or to simply buy another 4890 and crossfire it.
If I can assume correctly, the 4890 in crossfire should perform better than a 4870x2, so with that in mind, the 4890 CF and 5870 would be similar performance wise.
I may be wrong though.
Even now adays, on a sale you can get a 4890 for $199. get two of them and your looking at around the same price point as the 5870, but which one performs better?

At the moment, given the mature 4890 driver support, I'd say 2 4890 cards in CF will outperform a single 5870. Plus don't forget you'd have a total of 2GB of memory with dual 4890 cards unless you buy the 2GB 5870 which is not available yet.
If you already own a 4890 and have a CF-capable mobo, the most cost effective solution without sacrificing performance relative to a 5870 would simply be to buy one more 4890. People are having fire-sales on the forums and even brand new they go for $200.
Once you have dual 4890 cards, you will need something more enticing than a single 5870 to lure you in because dual 4890 cards will run anything on the market today. Only a 5870X2 or GT300-based card might lure you. I'm sticking with my dual 4890 cards into Xmas for sure. We'll see once GT300 comes out.

Yea great advice! I already have a 4890, and yea i've seen 4890's go for $199 here on RFD. Right now I don't need the performance right now. But i'll probably wait till christmas / boxing day to see if any 4890's go on special for like $150 or lower and CF them. I built my computer to be ready for crossfire. 1kW PSU, i7 920, asus p6t, should be all good for the crossfire set up!

Or you could wait out for the 5850. It's supposed to be just a bit faster than the GTX285 as compared to the 5870 that demolishes it.

Supposedly the gtx 300 is faster than 2 gtx 285 in SLI.(it has more than twice the amount of shaders based on rumors and they are faster and have more functionality)
The rumors say the 5870 have a 512bit bus with ddr5. This translates into almost twice the memory bandwidth of the 5870 since the 5870 only uses a 256bit bus.
I suspect memory bandwidth(230 gig/sec vs 150/gig/sec) is the very reason why the 5870 is slower than the 4870x2 in alot of cases, even those the 5870 has twice the specs, doesn't have to worry about cf and has higher clocks.
If you look at anandtechs review, than you could easily see, that a gtx 380 might be as fast as CF 5870s.

What you're forgetting is that NVIDIA doesn't like to drop prices. If ATI keeps their prices where they are ($379) NVIDIA will be more than happy to launch at ~$700 and "brag" about their 2x performance (even though I doubt it will actually be like that) instead of competing aggressively with the 5870 pricing.
I also doubt we'll see any performance cards from NVIDIA until mid-late January at the earliest.

I'm going to be getting a new comp this Friday. i7 860 (don't want crossfire) and was planning on going with a Gigabyte 4890 OC for $214.99. I see that the 5850 is $299.99. Is it more cost effective for me to get, say, a 4850 now, and a 5850 in 6 months or so, or should I drop the $300 on the 5850 right now and be happy? I'll be running 1680x1050 only.

Nvidia will have to price the card according to market conditions and how much sales they want to steal from NV. At the very most, NV will charge as much as the 5870x2 if they are close in performance.
If it is slower, I can see a 500-600 dollar card, which I will easily spend if it is significantly faster than the 5870. Similarly i might buy a 5870x2 if it is significantly faster than the gtx 380 and is price 100 within it.

Your not understanding though ... nvidia is not going to sell a gpu that costs them $700-1000 to make in a card sub $600.

How do ati card resellers stack up against each other? Do you guys pick by card sticker designs, or what? I imagine XFX, HIS, Asus and gigabyte being the best, but what's the difference between them all.

XFX usualy has double life-time waranty.
And other companies usualy either overclock them or add better cooling

Sweet spot is $300 for me. I figure once the NV 3 series comes out the 5870 will be down there, or maybe NV will have something on that level in the $300 area. Looks like I'll be waiting a little while.

Looks like I'll be waiting a little while. That's fine, what most of us are doing by the looks of it. Not like there's any games coming out that will take advantage of dx11 for a while. And yeah, dirt 2 doesn't count. Maybe call of prypiat but I doubt it'll be good enough on its own to make us run out and get one. Nvidia has time on its side I think.

Unless you need to buy a 5850 like NOW then thats a pretty piss poor attitude to take in regards to a $30-50 price point when the card as I believe hardops states is only at times 5-15% less preformance then the 5870.
There IS a 5850 that is under $300, BUT its a Asus videocard (on ncix.com $299.94 I think)& I'd never touch them for videocards as much as they have overclocking/tweaking software on most of them.
After reading ALL the reviews I have so far I have to say sucks to be a nvidiafanboy if you think GT300's coming out in the next 3-4 months & going to be the awnser to your " pwnage " in games. As I like to say nowadays, brand loyalty can only go so far. But I must say there will be alot of atifanboys & flipflopfanboys that will be laughing at the nvidia fanboys when they "pwn" them in games cause of a 5870 or 5850 card. :D
If peaple thought the hard to get 5870's was bad, after the positive reviews of the 5850 your going to see a crapload of peaple going after those cards & rightly so for being $100 less on average & only a 5-20% preformance drop + the crossfire preformance possibilities as well.
Myself my goal will hopefully be to grab either around nov/dec when prices & suplies stablize. But to those whom have grabbed either by now I envy you ;)

There's always the early adopter tax whenever a product launches due to supply and demand.
There'll always be people that are willing to spend top dollar on the latest and greatest. Maybe not around here because it's RFD but if you look at many enthusiast sites, people are flocking to one, two or even three 5870s right at launch :D.
Right now, I'm eagerly awaiting a waterblock to be out for the 5870 because it's pretty loud at 40% fan speed....

Put a ruler (1FT,30cm) on your PCI-E slot if the ruler doesn't touch anything (the hardrive cage for example) then you should be ok. It will defiantly extent into the HD cage area so you'll need to have room for it. Also make sure you have the front fans blowing air it to keep the card cool. Slow 1000rpm fans are enough.

Sorry to hear that. Yeah even the bloody 5870's are had to get a hand on these days. Some time in the first or second week of November they should both be available in great supply. That's the word anyway.
Interestingly, the card I ordered from Newegg is now a deactivated item. Hope I get it as its cleared all the stages but packaging and shipping now.

I'm going to run dual 24s at 1900x1200 and a third 46incher above. I know the 5750 can do the triple displays but one of the problems I've heard is you have to use that new output connector that isn't DVI or HDMI. Do they have adapters for this yet?
Also do you think I'm pushing it by doing triple displays on that one card? I don't game at all... but I don't wanna go CF either esp since this single card is supposed to be more quiet and runs cooler than older 4000 series.

Won't work, one monitor needs to have native display port connectivity.
You can buy an active adapter which will convert it, something like this:
