No problem supporting it here. Car is in the shop and it will take 3 days to get the parts to fix it. Sometimes things just work out.

Can't. The only way I can take transit to work is to detour first through Union Station... it'll be like a 2 hour train ride assuming no delays with Go which never happens.

Ha..
Greedy?!?!?!?
One of the reasons I live in 905 is to get away from the greedy 416ers, wanting $300,000 for their 600sf condo, $500,000 for their semi-detached home. Plus, for a fraction of the price, I get a nice house, with a yard and garage in a very nice neighbourhood
If anything 416ers are the ones who are greedy and arrogant!

Nice, good info. Should be less traffic to go for a nice long drive in the Hummer all alone.

DT housing is overpriced and no one willing moves to Thornhill if they have to bus it into the city core.
Could never understand the spite for 905ers.

cp24.com has an online poll about how people got to work on Car Free day.
58% voted car
23% voted Public transit
I wouldn't be surprised if those numbers would be the same for any other regular day.

Issue is with inter-city transit of which not that many exist and the ones that do aren't that great. Go's alright but only 2 trains in the morning and afternoon into and out of the DT core? That's very constricting.
The best way to deal with this is to merge all the separate transit companies within the Regions of Peel, Halton, York and TTC into one who can easily offer inter-city services. Build light-rail lines as an extension of the TTC subway lines and construct dedicated bus lanes with bus stations on all the major roads and highways.
Basically, the governments need to start designing Ontario's transportation infrastructure around the transit system instead of vice versa.

Because people don't give a crap about any initiative that inconveniences them. Like anything else, if you're willing to pay for a luxury item i.e driving versus waiting for TTC/bus or walking, then you pay for that. What we need is to compel people to drive smaller, fuel efficient cars and tax the hell out of the big gas guzzlers which include big displacement motor vehicles.
Drive a SUV = premium tax
Drive a car with more than 100hp = premium tax
I would be ok with this.

That would mean a tax on any new vehicle. As far as I know there is nothing out there with less 100hp or less.
A $13,000 (before incentives) Kia Rio has 110hp...

Quite obviously the "premium tax" isn't big enough right now then since SUVs are still selling like hotcakes.

They should tax anyone that has a vehicle that burns fuel. No reason to give people an incentive to drive anything. Tax vehicles and gas heavily and make public transit free or just really really cheap.

typical RFDer I guess...always wanting something for free...
umm gas is already taxed heavily - between 30 - 40%

Q. How much of the price of gasoline am I paying in taxes?
A. That depends on where you live in Canada and where you buy your gasoline. Taxes are usually responsible for the large component of gasoline prices. On average, Canadian taxes represent 30 to 40 per cent of what you pay at the pumps.
The federal portion consists of the excise tax, which is 10 cents per litre. In addition, the Goods and Services Tax, which is 5 per cent (as of January 2008), is added to the total pump price, and is effectively a tax on tax. (In the Atlantic, the GST is represented as a portion of the Harmonized Sales Tax.)
The provincial tax portion varies from province to province. Provincial taxes range from 6.2 cent per litre in the Yukon 20.4 cents in Prince Edward Island. In some urban centers, such as Vancouver and Montreal, an additional transit tax is levied.
Find out more about how what makes up the price of gasoline here.
Studies have shown that federal and provincial governments receive over $14 billion per year in gasoline taxes. Federal taxes collect an estimated $7Billion ($5B from excise taxes and an estimated $2Billion in GST) go into general coffers and help to fund a range of programs. Provincial gasoline taxes collect over $7.8Billion that are allocated as determined by each provincial jurisdiction.

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone participated in World Care Free day today? Did anyone leave their car at home and walk, bike, or rollerblade to work?
I personally bike to work everyday.

it would have been nice. Unfortunately not everybody works near their home. Travelling across the city north sucks. You're forced to commute to work. Would love to get a job downtown and take public transit again. Would be able to take advantage of tax credits. I think TTC should allow no transfers and a bus or train should cost $0.50. This should be affordable and convenient enough so that 80% of Torontonians would take it. I'd give up my car if that happened. In LA, a bus ride is so affordable. We should adopt their fees. Of course, I don't know what the wages are for LA transit employees, but should be comparable to TO.

How about an IMPROVE VEHICLE EMISSION TECHNOLOGY day. Newsflash: cars are here to stay, most of us rely on them. Lets work on making them more efficient so we can continue to use our roadway infrastructure rather then pretend taking your bike to work one day a year will actually do anything.
