View Full Version : Home Keurig B66 (Ultimate) + 90 KCups + Filter @ Costco $170

Just got this at Costco over the weekend.
In comparison, the Keurig Mini (B40) goes for $100, the B60 goes for $160 and the 90 kcups + filter goes for about $70. So either way you're saving on the machine or getting free kcups.

Coffee is great. Good machine. Excellent customer service. Coffee will be more expensive per cup, but the convenience and lack of clean up more than compensate as far as I'm concerned.
I know that everyone who comes to my house loves the machine and wants to buy one.
As an alternative to Costco (which is a good deal), Playfair Coffee in Brampton had an awesome deal recently - not sure if its still on. Their machine prices were cheap already, and then they were giving half the price of the machine back in kcups.

Can't speak to that particular model, but the Keurig machine we had at work made the worst coffee I've ever had. It was universally loathed by the entire office (a few hundred people). We finally got rid of it.

I have the single-cupper model. It's great. Very easy to use. I went with it since I'm living alone so having stale resevoir water didn't appearl to me, since I usually only use the machine on weekends - I like to drink my coffee an hour or two into the work day.

I also can't speak about this particular model, but I wanted to say that people's taste in coffee is an extremely subjective issue, so people shouldn't put too much weight on reviews that focus entirely on the taste of the coffee...
For what it's worth, my company has 230+ employees and we used to have a Keurig coffee machine. Sure there were a few people that hated the taste of the coffee, but that's to be expected when you have such a large sample of users. I really liked the coffee, and I can say that the flavoured coffees were especially well-liked by everyone in my department! (Unfortunately, our Office Services department decided not to renew our contract with Keurig, and instead switched to a different machine that uses cheaper single-serving pods.)

Does every single cup brewed mean there's a plastic k-cup to throw away or are they at least recyclable? If not, it seems there's a lot of waste being generated for just a single cup of joe.

i dont think they're recyclable due to the grounds inside them
but you probably could empty them and do it if needed (and compost the grinds)
i agree on the waste .... however the waste of 4 cups of clean water for a regular pot of coffee being wasted as well as the energy used in a normal machine offset some of this
i know my alumunium nespresso capsules are not recyclable but they're made from recycled material

I always tear the foil top off and tear out the mini filter inside and then recycle the cup. Gotta recycle! :)
Also of note, this deal also includes the $15-20 reusable filter so you can use your own grounds with it.

This is a quality coffee maker, its a centerpiece on our kitchen counter, everyone asks about it when they come over. Under 1 minute to have a hot drink. Some people say its noisy, mine is not, its very quiet. I personally have tried hazlenut(like), french vanilla(like), french roast(disgusting), Timothys breakfest blend(like) and hot chocolate(okay)

We also have a commercial machine here at work, but I don't use it since I don't drink coffee.
As for the deal itself, I saw this in Costco a few weeks back and it really is a good deal, as long as you don't mind such a wide (90!) variety of cups.

Pack of 18 kcups is 11 bucks without looking for any deals or anything. So that's 61 cents a cup plus tax.
Compare to Starbucks and timmies, still cheaper. Buy the My Kcup reusable thing and you're saving even more.
If you drink normal good coffee.. Starbucks, Second Cup, or even local coffee shops (real shops, not corner store or timmies), you're definiately saving, as those run 1$-2$ a cup!

This is a very expensive way to make coffee. We have one of these in our office. The waste that goes along with it is incredible. As well, I am not a huge huge coffee drinker, but I do know that the k-cup coffee just really isn't that good. I mean, it's still instant coffee no matter how you look at it. Essentially you're stuck with their coffee, like it or not. I give it a thumbs down.

it definitely is NOT instant coffee.. The grounds don't disolve in the water... It's just regular coffee, but made quickly....

It's not instant coffee - just regular grounds in a single-serving cup. This bundle even includes a re-usable K-Cup for you to use your own coffee grounds.
The K-Cups are recyclable - just tear off the foil & mini-filter
The quality of the coffee varies by manufacturer. Some are awful, some are great.

Love my Keurig - on my 2nd one actually! Have had my 1st one for about 5 years and it's still kicking... thought it had died on me so picked up the Costco deal then come to find out it was just a couple coffee grounds stuck in the top 'needle' and wouldn't let the water flow. A shot of canned air and it was good to go and use it in the office now.
For the convenience of not having to wash coffee pots, baskets, filters, stale water etc etc etc it's well worth the $$
The Costco pks of KCups are $24.99 for 50 making it $0.50/cup... used to get the best deal back in the day with that 50% off LNT coupon that floated around for a while making them $0.31 a cup... maybe that's why they went outta business :D

This seems like a bit of a silly post, no? You don't drink much coffee - but somehow you know this type of coffee isn't good? Why even bother saying that?
As for your comment about it being instant - that's just naive. It has ground coffee and a paper filter inside. In fact its exactly like drip coffee, except that the water is pushed through under some pressure.
You have a valid point about the waste. There's no question that this method creates more waste than other methods of making coffee. However, as others have said, you can recycle the plastic with a little effort so its not as bad as it could be.
There is a huge selection of coffee varieties available in k-cup format and given everyone has different tastes you are bound to find some coffees that you dislike and some that you like. Half of the fun of this machine is experimenting with all the different varieties and finding what you like. In fact you'll probably end up having different coffees at different times of the day. Sometimes I feel like a dark roast, sometimes I'll have something lighter, or even a flavour. When guests are over they pick whatever they like.
Now - as a warning to all of you excited about the My-KCup that comes with this offer, or that you can buy separately. I have it, and I know several others that have it - and all of us reach past it daily to one of our multitude of kcups? Why? Because the power of this machine is in the good coffee, quickly, conveniently with no clean up.

Depends on what you like. I've personally only tried the Tassimo a few times, but my limited experience matches what I've read online.... The general consensus seems to be that the coffee from the Tassimo isn't as good as the Keurig (or any of the pod coffee makers). However the Tassimo does well at the specialty drinks like Lattes and such.
So, if you just want coffee, you'd be better off with the Keurig. If you want different types of drinks the Tassimo may be a better fit.

I have keurig at work and tassimo at home.
I prefer the Tassimo because of the starbuck T-disc are pretty close to starbucks from the store, which I like alot. (starbucks breakfast blend is my favourite). The tassimo can do milk based drinks (latte and cappuchino) and an espresso facsimile:razz:, they are ok, but not as good as one would get from a espresso machine. Another plus is that the common tassimo disks (like Nabob and starbucks house blend) are available at all major grocery stores, so it is convenient that you don't have to stock up and buy large amounts of disk from online sources.
Keurig definately has more coffee selections, so you are bound to find something you'll like (timothy's rainforest espresso is good one for me).
If you prefer espresso type coffee, you would be better off with a nespresso machine. From what I understand they are quite the success back in Italy. So even in the espresso purist home ground, these convenient machines are gaining ground

The problem with Tassimo is that it is exclusively a home machine and the brand is owned by Kraft. This means limited coffee choice. Kraft does a good job of controlling what coffee brands it sells for this machine in each country. For Canada you are generally limited to Nabob (Kraft's main Canadian brand), a couple of Maxwell House's, and four or five Starbucks varieties. You generally can't get any of the European brands or Seattle's Best in Canada. If you like Starbucks, this is your only choice.
The Keurig machine is also designed for offices. This usually means a lot more choice. In Canada you can easily get any of the Timothy's or Van Houtte coffess and can often find the other brands from a Canadian source to order over the web. The main problem is that the Keurig does not make milk based drinks and the coffee is weak on the large settings. I get around this by only drinking the "bold" branded k-cups (which means each k-cup has 20% more coffee grinds).

I have a Tassimo at home, the starbucks tdiscs are good, the rest not so good. The milk drinks are not good at all. There is a lot of packaging waste produced with no reusable filter option. I don't use it anymore mostly because of the waste.

I'm on my third Keurig (B70, B60, now this one).
The B70 was great since it had the 12oz cup size for travel mugs, but I find the 10oz fills enough of the travel mug that it doesn't bother me. Also, some of the coffees tasted watered down at 12oz, especially if they weren't named 'bold' or 'black tiger' or similar :P
We had the B40 for a while but the pump was much louder than the B70/60/66.
For folks in Regina or Saskatoon, Ambassador coffee allows you to walk in and pick any 24 k-cups for about the same $ as buying a normal box of one flavour.
I've also ordered online from starcoffee.ca (Winnipeg based I believe), who have an ok selection and fast delivery.
There are only about 10 left at the Regina Costco as of noon today.
By the way, if you have two peoples drinking coffee at the same time, there are many "recipes" you can make that are tasty -- ie. Timothy's White Hot Chocolate k-cup + Blueberry Coffee k-cup. Mmmmmm

There's a Keurig machine at my office and I drink from it everyday because it takes 10 seconds to brew a cup, and they have a lot of flavours to choose from, but I would never buy one with my own money.
I think the biggest problem lies with the fact that the coffee is brewed too quickly, so the subtle flavours of the bean tend to get lost, giving the brew a flat one dimensional taste.

Thanks for the tip on this place. I called Playfair and their current deal is buy 4 get 1 free but the cost per box is only $15 including taxes so it works out to $60 for 120 cups (5 x 24 cups) so just $0.50/cup which is a good price in my opinion.
They also said that you can mix some boxes with different flavours which is a cool option. Only Timothy's k-cups I believe but they claim to have all flavours including teas and hot chocolate.
I should note that these prices were quoted assuming that I'm picking them up at their Brampton location.
I'll probably try them out once my current batch from eBay runs out.

When you register your unit on Keurig.com, you get a ONE TIME offer to grab 2 boxes of coffee for FREE (when you buy 2). Coupon code is WARRANTY.
They have tons of varieties.
I just did it and it comes to around 35 USD for 4 boxes of coffee. Unfortunately, for Canadian Orders you need to pay a $9.95 brokerage fee (included in the 35 bucks above)
Still pretty amazing deal to get k-cups @ 36 cents each.
Here is the fine print for Canadian Orders:
For CANADIAN ORDERS please note a $9.95 surcharge for documentation and brokerage fees will be applied to all orders.
All Brewer and Accessory purchases shipped to Canada are also subject to additional fees. In addition to the $9.95 surcharge, Brewer purchases will have Canadian duties charged at a rate of 9% and Accessory purchases will have Canadian duties charged at a rate of 5%. Thanks OP, bought one from Costco.
Minus the 90 k-cups and filter, the machine is actually only around $100.

I bought mine a couple weeks ago. I'm REALLY impressed by the coffee. Th only drawback I see in this device is the amount of coffee it makes. I find that to fill my mug, I neeed to use two kcups.
Needless to say, I've been going through coffee really quickly :)

Have anyone find the donut shop blend anywhere in store around GTA?
Thanks!

Do not use two k-cups, just run the cycle twice - I find the coffee to be strong enough when I do this - when I need to feel my travel mug.

You must like watery, dilute coffee!! I'd never do that. Not to mention, running the cycle twice for one K-Cup is something Keurig advises against.

+1. I find that the standard k-cup barely makes a strong 8oz. cup. Would never dream of filling a travel mug with a regular k-cup. Only go for the extra bold ones in that case.
Water twice though 1 K-cup is unthinkable.

Timothy's just released their own "Donut Blend". I picked some up the other day and thought it was pretty good - seemed to be similar to the Coffee People's version.
The other new flavour that Timothy's also now offers is the Kahlua K-Cup. Seems to be selling well as it's been sold out a couple times now when I've went in to grab some.
One last tip for those in the GTA who can't be bothered to order online - the Timothy's in Richmond Hill at Bayview and Major Mac allows you to mix and match your flavours for a buck more than what you would normally pay for a box (so $16.75 for a mix and match of 24 K-Cups and $15.75 for a box of 24 of one particular flavour). Not sure if other Timothy's offer this option as well since the Scar Town Centre location didn't.

really? I'll give it a try. Not sure how that would be different than just choosing the large size? Same amount of water.
edit: after reading the last few replies... I'm going to have to agree with the others. Squeezing more than 8oz out of one of those cups doesn't leave you with very good tasting coffee.

Well, as others said, ppls taste in coffee is never the same :-) I never add sugar in my coffee (sugar kills the taste), just a bit of milk. So, for me the taste is good. I actually find it too strong when I make a small cup of coffee with this machine.
LOL, I would not be surprised if Keurig would advise to change a k-cup in the middle of a cycle :cheesygri - the more you waste, the more you would buy - better for them.

I don't believe it would be just that. Actually once they have sold you the machine, there is no incentive for them to make you buy more K-cups as the k-cups are all made by 3rd parties, or in the case of my k-cup, by you. I believe, running it the second time with already drained coffee will clog up the needle that delivers that hot water into the cup, and shorten the working of the product.
Whether you choose to believe them is up to you. I can see why you find it strong if you make a "small" cup. But its adequate for a regular mug size.

FYI, Green Mountain Coffee is the parent company of Keurig, and they also happen to be the largest supplier of K-cups through their Green Mountain Coffee, Caribou Coffee, Tully's, and Newman's Own brands/licences. ;)

This is arguable :-) - Keurig is very interested in well being of the k-cup producers - there will be no demand for the machine if there would be limited supply of k-cups; so the connection here is quite obvious. About clogging up the needle - open a used k-cup and you will see that the coffee is squeezed up to the sides - there is no clogging of a hot water supply needle.
Anyway, running the same cycle twice works for me - if you need stronger/"tastier" coffee they you'd have to use 2 k-cups. I do not really see the grounds for an argument here.

Agreed. Also, as long as they are called "K"-cups, I am sure Keurig is getting a cut. :)
