Pretty hot deal for those of us that have someone with whom we can share Aeroplan points with. Basically the Aeroplan website has a special promo going on that is 50% off the regular 2 cent per mile transfer fee (1 cent transfer fee). This promo lasts until the end of September (Sep 30th is the last day).

This is great if you have someone who you can combine points with in order to get to achieve a certain number of points.

To see this offer, go to www.aeroplan.com
You have to go to the "Share Miles" section within the "Use You Miles" heading on the website.

Even at 1c I find it's quite expensive. I can see doing it if you only need a really small number of points, but I wouldn't do it for like half the cost of the flight, better off (in the long term) saving your points till you have enough. For example a long-haul flight in canada (more than one province over) is 25,000 points, let's say you had to transfer 10,000 points, it would cost 100$ to transfer the points over, and the flight is only worth about 400$ (before tax).

I guess if the flight is very expensive for the dates you want to fly (if there are no seat sales), then you might be better off transferring a large number of points. But if the alternative to the points is paying a reasonable price, I personally would just pay for my flight and save my points until I have enough.

Keep in mind (in case people didn't know this), that you can use your points to book a flight for somebody else without paying any extra fee. It's only if you combine two accounts together that you have to pay this transfer fee.

one could just use the account to buy redeem tickets for someone else, that way you don't need to pay the transfer rate... (ie, person A uses the points to get redeem a ticket for person B)

Good point. but it wouldnt work if both dont have enough points and only by combining it can it achieve a certain reward mileage.

If you plan to take Business Class, transferring even half of the points is still worth it. Just do a simple cost analysis, buy your airfare or redeem points.

Can't remember the date but somehow year 2013 is an important one. If you're points were awarded in 2006? or earlier, they will expire in 2013. You may want to start redeeming before those points are lost.

You don't know how wrong you are with this statement. Points.com is one of the biggest ripoffs going. I hope you haven't used it extensively. They usually give you about 10% of the value of your points when transferring between programs. At least when I checked out a few conversion rates I remember it being unbearably bad.
