Walmart Anniversary sale week 2
TomTom 720 gps on sale for 148.00, is this a hot deal? Or standard? Its advertised in this weeks upcoming flyer..
*edit* seems this model is the 720 not the 730... However still for 148 it still seems like a crazy good price

Garmin apparently has better route calculations.
I've played with TOMTOM both stand-alone and software for an HP Ipaq and N95-8gb (my review thread is in the cellphone forum somewhere).
For those people who have iphones....99.99 can't be beat. Why spend moremoney for hardware when you can have it on a device you already have eH? Don't ask me about nuances of how it performs mind you...I've read one bad thing about it (I guess nothing is perfect)...but still.

seem like a hot price... paid 215 for the 730 a couple of weeks ago.
As far as I can tell, this model does not have IQ routing or voice inputs. Does anyone know if they can be added after by updating the navcore?
Is this recertified? Its a pretty old model.

Yep, it's a pretty old model, say nothing that only a few stores have it in stock now... So, if only Wal-Mart get some stock specially for a next week sale, this deal could be dead even before it starts...

That's because it is now discontinued... By the way, the 730 (model that replaced the 720) is also pretty much discontinued with the release of the 740 live model.

Oh, I agree too... I really like my tomtoms. I find that they do a good job, the current maps are a lot better than they used to be, the user interface is the best out there, map share and quick fix are great, the auto reroute is fast and the navcore is easily replaced to add more features. I have even gotten vocalizerTTS on my one -3rd.

True, I recently did a contest with a couple of friends from work that have Garmins, we all had to find an address nevers used before (we just looked for random canadian addresses in google), we did it 4 times and all 4 I found the address and calculated the route withing 30 sec... They both took a lot longer than that (we were not counting the time but it was at least 2 to 3 min). Being able to see suggestions and pick from them while you type is awsome! One of them was really mad about it, the other one not so much because he bought it just a couple of weeks ago so he will be returning it and getting a TomTom...:)
I have never see a GPS with an interface as user friendly as the TomTom one... and it has not really chaned that much since I had it on my Palm 650 4 years ago, now I have 720 hacked to work as a 930, others brands should learn from it...

anyways i own a tomtom and i love it. 720 is old but a solid device. to me it's way better than garmin...... 2 of my buddies own them and they are satisfied with it and highly recommend the product.

I see Canada Computers is selling the same model refurbished for $140 but some of the reviews state that they needed to spend an extra $100 to upgrade the 2 year old maps.
With Walmarts being new do you know if that would be included in the price or do you still have to pay to upgrade the maps on this one as well?

i don't think you can hack a 720 into a 940 (or 930). These models have hardware improvements like an internal gyro that helps accuracy in tunnels and stuff which the 720 just doesn't have.

True, but the only feature you will be missing is the Enhanced Positioning Technology (EPT) as it does not have the internal acelerometer+gyroscope. To tell you the truth I have seen this in action and it is not that good, most of the times the GPS get's hung when you enter a tunnel and needs to be reset... maybe they already fixed it on the latest navcore releases, not sure.
Everything can be hacked:
- Advance Lane Gidance: Yes with a hacked Navcore + latest maps
- IQ Routes: Yes with a hacked Navcore + latest maps
- 4GB internal memory: Yes, with a external SD card (mine has an 8GB)
- Traffic receiver: Yes, with the external antenna

You are super knowledgeable with respect to this device.
Can you answer a few questions.
How is the traffic service in Toronto, is Avenue Road and the 401 covered?
What is the fee for traffic service?
Have you tried and/or gotten Tom Tom Plus to work with your cellphone?
I have a nice dataplan on my blackberry and thought that those features alone would be worth it.
But my main hope is for good traffic coverage.

Are you sure this is a good deal? This is regular price on Amazon.com.. and the 730 is only $200 there (I realize they don't ship to Canada, but you should be able to find similar prices here I would think), and the 740 will be released shortly. Doesn't seem too hot.
Also, I've read from multiple sources that this device has major problems with Canadian roads and will often tell you to drive through mountains and things like that :S
Think waiting for boxing day would be my best bet? Don't need a GPS until March..

Unfortunately I'm still in the iPod Classic era. I was about to get a Touch but they are hard to come by right now. I am about to move from Halifax to Moose Jaw (leaving Tuesday) and was going to pick up a FM transmitter I got home and realized that this would work as well.
Looking at the TomTom site they want quite a bit of money for their cables. It looks like there are 2 cables one for the audio and one to control your iPod using the GPS screen. I don't really care about using the touch screen to control my ipod so I am wondering if I just pick up an audio cable (head phone to head phone) if that will work.
By the way if anyone has any advice on what Moose Jaw is like let me know.:)

This is a bit old (version wise) but. I just upgraded my 720 today, it took me a long time to find how to do it. There is like no details at all around.
Basically you have to upgrade your maps from v712.xxxx to v835.2421, thats give you ALG, IQ routes, and you upgrade your nav software from v8.3x to v8.412.
It come with version 7 something but when i did the HOME normal upgrade it did to 8.3x or around that. So it was not enough.

They'll ask for a copy of the receipt to verify it's within 30days of purchase.
At the end, they'll add the new map to your tomtom home.

Picked one up yesterday, thanks OP.
Comes with NA maps 710.1584, really old and it won't do the free upgrade, grrrrr!, time to start a help ticket.

Picked one up on Friday. Compared it to the Garmin 265W.
Final Say (IMO): I'm going to stick with the 265W. I don't like Tom Tom's routes, display options, POIs. The only thing that the 265W is lacking is the Traffic and Bluetooth, which I THINK is available on the 265WT.
After playing with the Garmin and the Tom Tom, I'm going to stick with Garmins. Needless to say, this Tom Tom 720 unit is going back to Wal-Mart.

My experience is the opposite - I much prefer TomTom to Garmin. My Garmin tells me to make a turn with something like 5 seconds to the turn while my old TomTom gave me much more reasonable time between warning to turn and when I had to turn. The "lag" on the Garmin is not acceptable and that is why I will be getting rid of the Garmin. Garmin Traffic is useless in Toronto. I hate the "coupons" that the unit tells me I have offers for.

anyone know about walmart in vancouver. i really need this for work.
There was about 6 units left at the Lougheed Mall Walmart in Burnaby. The Walmart Supercentre by Grandview Hwy was all sold out. Good luck!

I picked a unit up on Friday, call customer service to upgrade maps and everything was installed. Got iq routes and it allows me to select Show lane images.
However it still does not show any lane assist when on the 401 in the GTA, am I missing something.
Also for Traffic? how does this work, it says I need to set up a wireless data connection, forgive my ignorance, but does it mean that it will use my BT wireless phone and since I don't have a data plan on my Rogers account, I will be charged data $$ by Rogers?

A few things I don't like about this unit vs. the Garmin:
POI database is missing about 75% of local businesses. Anyone notice that?
The unit doesn't power on with the ignition. You have to push the power button. I hate that.

Yes exact, it come with 1 month free, it connect though your BT phone on the data plan. You will get charged if you dont have a data plan. The data should be small though.

Data over bluetooth is a brilliant feature, one problem, same with all GPSes including Garmin:
Traffic is crap in Canada! You get all sorts of accident info from the states, but none from Toronto.

I followed all the steps to standardize the battery test:
-no bluetooth
-internal speaker
-brightness set at 50%
-no light detection
My battery from a full-night's charge lasts only 2hours without even doing anything (i.e. just sitting on my desk). If it's in use, it will last an hour. Has anyone had this problem? I'm tempted to return it.

I haven't timed it exactly, but I did notice the battery drain fast-ish. I'll try timing it more. Is it that big of a deal if the battery is so so though? Not that bad to plug in to charge in car while driving. Or are there other reasons?

I picked up the last one from the Vancouver Grandview location yesterday. It was open box so I also got 10% off too. From what I can tell it hasn't been molested, the packaging and contents are all in tact and the screen film still on device.
