+1 to this. A great addition to any house, and this package includes everything you need to go. If you have a roughed in central vac (which most new houses have), installation is a snap.

This is an instant rebate, so you don't need the coupon. Great deal and it includes the floor sweep option that allows you to add a suction vent so you never have to use a dust pan!

Description at top lists the attachments. Spoke to a couple of CVAC stores that sell Hoover and they tell me that the motor in this is small and may not be suitable. They were willing to price match but recommended a better unit.

I installed the previous model of this Hoover (the S5620 kit, I believe) in my house in 2003 and it has worked great.
I got mine for $399 ($200 off as well), my first purchase at Costco.
Like you, the new house was roughed in on the top two floors and unfinished in the basement.
I used the provided installation kit to connect to the rough-in end coming from the upstairs, added an outlet in the basement, and attached to the unit which I installed in the laundry room.
When we added an attached garage and new master bedroom/bath addition this past year i tapped into the line and added another run with outlets in the new bedroom and garage underneath, still using the pipes from the installation kit.
The outlets are easy to install at the rough in points, just a low voltage connection.
Cheers,
Dave

How many sq. ft is your house? Also, is there a lot of work putting an outlet in the basement (i'm trying to figure out what I would need to do to get a line there without cutting up drywall on the first floor)? My garage also has 2 pipes coming out to it.

Our home is under construction and when I spoke to the Central Vac sub-contractor he said his friend has this unit and it works very well. He recommended buying from Costco as his cost price for a comparable unit would be a couple hundred more.
He said he could do the install with the unit in the garage for $250.

We have a new house with CVac rough-in to the basement. We are hoping to install the CVac in the garage which will require some additional piping to be installed.
Been looking at CVac's all around and similarly featured units will cost $700 plus, and it doesn't include the accessories (this package comes with a electronic powerhead) and installation materials. All that stuff will add another $200 or so. At $479 this is a great deal.

The CVAC stores are trying to screw you over. The unit handles up to 5000sqft of home and the suction is more than adequate for even the longest of runs. You will be hard pressed to find a better unit for the same price.

our house have the CVac roughin terminated into the furnace room. we have installed the Central VAC in the garage by cutting and reversing some of the joint pipes. luckily, I know we have a pipe going from the basement to the second floor of the house behind the common wall of the house and garage. OPened up the wall and cut the pipe and installed a junction.
all in all, its a good location as the vacuum is loud (cant imagine how loud it will be if we installed it in the furnace room) :D

the installation is easy but a little messy (be carefull with the glue - got some on my pants and its hard to remove hahah).
its like jigsaw puzzle.
if you decided to install yourself, make sure all the connection are on the right location after putting in the glue. (have to redo one connection as I put the junction upside down LOL) my mistake though.

Some questions and hopefully someone can share some light on these:
Does the vac come with a muffler? Or can one be hooked if the vac does not come with one?
Our house has rough in throughout, it is do-able to DIY? I am ok in installing stuffs following manuals, but most of the time I have to work alone so concern is whether this can be setup by one person.
Our house has hardwood floor throughout, should we get one or two canister or upright instead?
Thanks

Most places I phoned charge between $250-290 for installing a unit. I'm also thinking of getting a slot added at the kitchen floor for sucking up the debris you collect with a broom. It cost an extra $150.
Still haven't made a decision about buying this unit yet. Anyone have experience with CANAVAC?

Its a do-able to DIY one person. I installed it alone, took longer as I just do it after work. took me a week, :) just be careful with the glue as that stuff sticks and dries very fast.
Our Vac came with a plastic muffler that fits on the standard vac tube. Im assuming you could replace it with something else but we just installed the one that came with it. :D hopes that helps.

Those are the best invention ever. Definitely go for having the slot added in the kitchen. Saves you a lot of time if you just need to do a quick broom up (or swiffer) and have the garbage automatically sucked away.

I may be wrong, but I recall people complaining about this model. Something about not having a power switch on the handle, so as soon as you plug the hose in the vac turns on.
Also, we had two of the vac pans installed, wife thought it was a great idea. She never uses them. She says its quicker to vacuum the floor using the attachment on the hose than to sweep.

The most difficult part is the make sure they all line up correctly. like the saying "Measure twice cut once" once all the cutting has been done, they all stick nicely together :D

I bought this unit a couple of years ago, and it works great. We have a Golden Retriever that sheds a LOT, and had purchased 2 previous high-end portable vacuum. This central vac is FAR superior to either of our previous portable vacuums.
Had almost everything needed in the install kit, only had to buy a few elbows and other miscellaneous PVC parts. Added additional outlets from what was roughed in, and also the vac-pan. All was easy for a casual DIY'er. Definitely agree with the measure twice cut once addage.

Escuse my ignorance, but aren't all central vacs turned on as soon as you plug the hose in? The power switch in the handle would be just for the beater bar.

We bought this earlier this year when it was on sale for the same price.
It's a great unit with good power and lots of accessories. Very glad we picked it up back then. I did a quick look online and at Home Depot and Rona back then and couldn't find anything else comparable in this price range.
The hose attachment does have a power switch so you can turn it on and off easily at the handle. There are three positions to the switch --> completely off (no suction or power), suction only, and suction and power to the beater both on. A muffler is included on the unit which does decrease the noise.

No...if this is like the one we bought six years ago, the power nozzle has a three way rocker switch...center position is off, to the left is vacuum only (activates the central vac canister) and to the right is both power head and suction.
EDIT oops, rascal had already explained it, my bad

Does anyone know how the brush motor works on these things? Do you have to plug a separate power cord to an outlet? Do most builders also place an external pipe for the exhaust when they say its "roughed in"
Thanks.

Yes, most powerheads have a separate power cord that you plug in that powers the beater bar. Usually the builders will put the CV outlet near a power plug.
No, as usually the rough in will terminate in an unfinished basement or garage and the builder does not know where you will want your exhaust to exit the house.

Thanks. I had just bought a 20 year old house that has central vac installed already, but the main unit is in the unfinished basement and is incredibly loud. For most people that wouldn't be a problem, but I plan on finishing the basement and need to move the unit into the garage. When I do that, I'll need to add another outlet in the basement. I thought I'd just buy a new unit and use the accompanying tubes and recepticles to add to the current system.
However, the current unit that we have, as I say is probably 20 years old, comes on as soon as you plug the hose in. I'll have to check out how the contacts work on it, as I may have to put in new recepticles if I upgrade to this unit.

if you plan to terminate the unit to your garage, you just have to make sure all the T or Y Junction are pointing the right way. it will affect the dirt suction if its reversed.
I have to rotate two of my junction to point to the garage instead of the basement.

For only $125 more after taxes, I now get not only hose and power head but also vacuum canister. That way I can install the second canister, split my system into two zones and avoid any long runs of tubing and have powerful suction throughout my home (3200 sq ft bungalow).

It is a great unit with unbeatable price.
- Accessory kit is upgraded + I believe it comes with sweep pan which is great if installed in kitchen (to use hose is not handy all the time, especially if you have to sweep a small area like kitchen after cooking or kids meal)
- I saw a question about if it turns on by itself after plugging in the hose , it should not be the case. If it is happening there might be two reasons
o Hose is not inserted properly with proper alignment
o Low voltage wiring is not correct.
- If some one needs help in installation in GTA area I have a guy who has very good rates and does a clean job. (PM me)

The vacuum unit is loud, with a somewhat high pitch... But remember that you don't install it on your main floor... you install it in the basement or in the garage, where the noise issue diminishes greatly!

I was at the Costco at Leslie and Elginmills to take a look at the unit.
Additional info:
-made in Canada
-7 year warranty
-30 foot hose is wire re-inforced
-Powerbar is better then the "Beam classic cleaning kit"
I would definitely bet this is a Canvac 250 with a 10 amp motor
Questions I would consider:
-How loud is the unit in operation?
-Can a muffler be added?
On a side note if you are going to buy cleaning accessories I highly recommend the vacmaster (http://www.the-vacmaster.ca). I live pretty much in vacuum alley in Toronto and they had the cheapest prices. So it is a great place to go and you don't have to bargain.

Although this is my first central vac, the unit does seem loud and emits a high pitch sound.
A muffler is included, however, there is absolutely no change in noise level with or without the muffler. Also, the "exhaust" port does not serve any real purpose as there is about as much air exiting from it as there is from the motor's ventilation slots or the top lid slot. So it looks like exhaust air is just dumped in the canister and exits where ever it wants.
This is definitely a Cana-Vac 250 unit with a 10 amp motor.
EDIT: As a test I tried sealing all gaps with electrical tape so the air now actually exits by the exhaust port and through the muffler. It toned the sound down a lot and the muffler actually now makes a difference. The canister where the motor is got relatively hot, but only feeling with my bare hand I can't tell if it was any hotter than before.
EDIT2: I used a digital meat thermometer with a remote probe to check the temps. I left the unit run for 30 minutes and took measurements. I checked against the canister at the motor level and both temps are at 49 C with or without all openings but the exhaust taped. I also measured by inserting the probe in the slot in the top lid. It measured 59 C open and 61 C taped. I then measured directly in the exhaust silencer. 60 C open and 62 C all taped up.

For the Vacusweep, would it be a lot of trouble to install if you didn't have rough-in piping to the kitchen? My house only has one rough-in outlet on the main floor.
Does this come with piping to install an outlet into the basement and garage as well?
Is this bag/bagless or option for either?
How are you guys so sure that it's the same motor as the Canavac 250? The airwatts and water lift ratings are different than on the Canavac site.

I am not sure how you will measure "lot of trouble" but yes it tougher than regular instalation and main reason is you do not have pipe already there so make hole in floor and subfloor either under cabnites or in the wall at appropriate place in kitchen is extra bit work (for whcih most installers ask $150 extra ).
Costco unit comes with extra pipes & pipe accessories, wall plates , wire and glue for the pipe......... but no tools:)
It is bagless and easy to empty

The parts list I posted earlier say it has a 10 amp motor. The best thing to do is to contact your Canvac dealer and ask how many amps are in the 250 model has (most have floor model motors to visually check). The thing is when an item is manufactured 3rd party they can substitute parts. Joe from Vacmaster mentioned that he had the ability to customize the units he orders in store.

I did this last year. I think I took half a day to do this. (2 outlets and vac unit)
you pretty much push in the receptacles and screw them in to hold in place. (after connecting the low voltage roughed in wires to the receptacles)
The canister is easy as well.
Connect bracket to wall. Hang unit to wall. connect white pipe. connect low voltage wires to unit. plug in and done.

For basement installations I found that if you can exhaust outside that really cuts down on the noise, well, moves a lot of the noise outside. Better than a muffler IMO

Anyone know where to buy extra outlet sockets?
I have 4 rough-ins for the Central Vac and this comes with only 3. Looking to get a matching outlet socket.
Also, is there a special adapter for garage or do you guys just add an additonal regular outlet to the garage?

I was able to purchase additional on one of our local vacuum store. They sell the same looks. I didnt purchase the one with the brand Hoover in front. (They wanted almost twice the price:)
can't remember the store I bought mine from. will post once I found the receipt :)

for this model you donot have to install any outlet in gerage becuase it has built on the vac itself (i believe).

Thanks for the answers. Can we use a bag to make emptying less messy?

$200 off Hoover WindTunnel Central Vac at Costco and Costco.ca, from 21Sept2009 to 04Oct2009. Reg. price $680. Taxes applied to reg. price.
Comes with all accessories, including power head for carpets, and all installation hardware (tubing, glue, faceplates, low-voltage wire, etc.), and a kick-plate interface for kitchen.
I bought and installed this unit and am happy with it... excellent value with the $200 coupon!
Did you do the installation yourself? Would you recommend doing it? My house is roughed in for central vac and was considering it.
THanks

It is not any mess without bags becuase I believe you are not using vaccume on wet floor but only dry dust and some small stuff from floor.
I think adding a bad should not be a problem if you are inserting a bag in canister with open mouth (obviously bag's) upword becuase it will not help a lot becuase actual messy thing is curtain between motor and canister.

My wife uses this on all floors and it works great, considering it has attachements for all floors. but obviously it will not clean the floor it will pick any foreign objects on the floor (dust and small stuff) you will still have to mop.

As long as you actually mount the vacuum in the garage! Some people mount them in the basement.

Yes, I did it myself... took my time, planned a lot, was very careful with the glue (it can drip, so when gluing at ceiling level in my unfinished basement, I took care not to be in the drop-zone, and placed plastic below the area... most times it didn't drip, but a little caution is worthwhile)...
I put the kitchen kick-plate under the drawer cabinet... broke out a ceramic tile, drilled thru the floor, and voila!

Bought this from Costco on the weekend, shopping around for people to install it in the garage.
- 4 roughed in (2 top and 2 main floor)
- Hang in garage
- one outlet basement to be added
Quotes I've gotten so far:
$210, $300,$200,$250 (includes parts and labor, some won't charge tax)
I'm still considering whether to install Vacpan or not that comes with the unit. I phoned a couple of Hoover dealers here in Pickering and they are offering a better Hoover unit (HUSH S5627) for about $548 with $188 to install. My only concern is the Hush appears to be a really old model (I saw a RFD post back from 2005 and being on sale at Costco.
BTW: To use a hose in the garage, can you buy any name brand hose that will work with the unit or does it have to be a Hoover? Some places are selling the Car Care kit from $30 -$50 (hose + accessories).
I haven't opened the unit yet so I can still return it to Costco. How are others that recently bought it finding the unit?

Yes I'd like to hear some other recent overall reviews. We are considering going to pick this up on the weekend. The price is definitely right but we just want to make sure it has sufficient suction to justify the purchase.
Still unsure as to whether we are going to install the unit in the garage or in the basement. We do not have a rough-in yet and the garage is finished whereas the basement isn't, so we are leaning more towards a basement cannister install.

I am the fence to take the plunge and was wondering if this unit can be installed horizontally? The reason I am asking that is that I have a nice location in the basement under the stairs but too low to be installed vertically. Also all my Vacuum tubes and wires finish actually at this location.
Thanks

I see online that the sale price is good until Oct. 18th however in the coupon book it was only to be on sale from Sept. 17 to Oct. 04. With that said, can anyone confirm if that price in store is still the sale price? We were going to go pick it up on Sunday, but its over an hour drive and don't want to waste time/gas if it isn't.

Finally found the online user manual that would come with this unit (model sh80005ca). Answered most of the questions I had about the unit.

I read that Hoover warranties the motor for 7 years, which is pretty much average from what I've heard from other central vacuum shops.

Thanks OP!
I've been humming and hawing over this Vacumm for a while as I saw it at a great price, however, I wanted to go with a Vacuflo as it is the "Dyson of Central Vacs!". That other model, although it has rave reviews, costs almost double the price of this Hoover.
I figure for the savings I can almost buy a Roomba or something for day to day use, and then whip out the Hoover on the weekends. This is still much better than hand held systems, and the Amertek motor sold me.
Costco Edmonton South has about 4 left. Great deal!!

Yeah I'm in no huge rush to buy one. I'll wait till it comes on sale again.... unless someone from Edmonton wants to return it. Than they can sell it to me. :)
