Best none contract phone plan

As title says. Whats the best deal? I have a gsm phone so i guess i am stuck with rogers/fido. As of now the best bet is the fido with there little monthly plans. BUT, is there anyway to get more mileage out of my buck? Possibly buying a sim card via buy/sell to avoid activation fees? (is that even possible). Referrals? Special deals...

Anything to help save some money would be greatly apreciated!
