Performed a jump start today and started. It drives perfectly but everytime when i shut off the car and try to start it again without boost, it does not start. Could it be the battery, alternator, starter??

Did you run the engine long enough to charge the battery?
How old is the battery?

what caused the battery to drain in the first place?
if its a known cause then all u need is to recharge the battery properly.
drop it off at canadian tire overnight for a free charge...or jump start it and let it run for a while by driving it...not just letting it run.
if the battery is good, bith methods should get it charged up properly...
and if the battery is good and charged up properly but the car still dies after running on the battery for a while, then your charging system is not doing its job...probably your alternator is not charging the battery.

3/4 year old car with 400k km on it? Seems really high unless you mean 40k.

Battery is dead, replace it. If the battery eventually fails again in a short period of time, it's the alternator. But most likely it's just the battery.
It's not the starter because your car starts.
How the hell do you have 400k km on the car?

Wow 400,000KM are you a taxi driver or something :-0

I had a similiar problem, only starts when boosted, then I took a closer look and realized that one of my battery terminals were corroded and didn't provide a good connection to the battery so I changed the terminal and worked perfectly. Or it may be a bad battery.

Don't forget to check your battery fluid level if applicable. 1 dry cell and your battery won't work right.
If your Corolla battery is low on water, add distilled water and charge your battery.

so your car actually has 400,000km?
Waiting for actual confirmation from OP

Or is it just his dad's car he's having problems with again...?

Is the issue that the car will not start or will not even crank over?
If it will not crank, or not crank very long , then the battery may just be goint flat. 400K kms is a lot of usage.
If it cranks and will not start until the battery dies, that is another issue (or a number of issues).

Easiest way to tell, is free check at garage on battery. 2 minute test and any mechanic can do it with battery tester.
Chances are battery, but with high clicks and running it an hour and no charging coudl mean alternator is bad as well, and may need a new battery also if alternator has drained battery completely a few times requiring boost.
The number one thing when you need to boost a car is determine reason, left on lights, door ajar, etc... If no physical indication, then take to a mechanic to chekc battery and alternator. As catching early will save a costly double bill of battery and alternator when only one needed initially.

Insightful, concise and, informative

Well, if the alternator is faulty and not charging, there would be a light on the dash.
Very few places will do an electrical system check for free, generally about $60.

Perhaps but a load test on the battery is done for free around here...put a Charger on battery overnight then geta load test done.

+1. If this car really has 400,000Km, it's likely the alternator (especially if it hasn't been replaced before). There's carbon brushes inside the alternator that eventually wear out after high miles.
Use/Borrow a voltermeter:
1. Check the voltage with the car running. Volts = 14.4 means alternator is ok.
2. Let the car sit with engine off for 15 mins. Volts = 12.6 or high = battery is OK
You shouldn't charge a dead battery with the alternator anymore.

+1, my corolla was the same issue, clean and retighten the terminals before you waste more time figuring out what the problem is.
if that doesn't work, take the battery to partsource and have it tested, and then u eliminate two issues, and then could be alternator.

Great, now that you are going again, take the car to a shop and get a charging system check done. Make sure they do a load test as well. This will give you all the information you need on your alternator, regulator, battery and general charging system status.
Most likely you just had a battery with a cell dead or dying out but, you got a lotta miles and being proactive is good.

Where did you go to get it? Did you install it yourself? Did you shop around?
My 2000 Explorers' battery is dying, had to jump it 3 times in the past two weeks. Came here to find out where's the best place to get one and started reading alternator probs >:(

Canadian Tires or Costco. Costco is a bit cheaper if they have the right type.
