isn't 750 HP a bit excessive for a joy ride once a week on a weekend or a daily driver car? or any car with 400+ HP unless you take it to the track most of the time.

I wonder if that things got upgraded suspension... 750hp and a live rear axle = catastrophe waiting to happen.

A person can still drive 150+ km/h, just know when to and when not to. Occasionally i drive over 150km/h but only for a minute or so for the need for speed and so far haven't got caught yet.

Not with some good tires and a dragstrip

Not with some good tires and a dragstrip

right because only straight roads exist.

honestly if ford spent less money supercharging mustangs and actually put some money into upgrading the suspension, the mustang can actually be a proper sports car... not that there's anything wrong with being a pony car.

The new mustangs are actually very good in the handling department even with a rear live axle. They pull about 0.90g in the corners. (motortrend)

Im not sure, but i think it was autoblog that said car and driver managed to get the upcoming mustang with the 5.0L coyote+track pack and pirelli r compound tires around a track as fast as the current M3...

whoop de doo, more than enough power, but it's still a mustang. Lipstick on a pig?

It'll probably first off the light, but the Euro's will leave it at the first turn...

Sorry to disappoint chad, but in reality, silly boys covet cars with ridiculous BHP numbers and handling inferior to a Loblaws shopping cart.

Yeah the new mustang and camaro have such terrible handling. Which is why the test numbers are "so horrible."

Who said anything about roads? I mentioned a dragstrip.

The Mustang has always had a niche following of 1/4 milers. I've had a 9 second Mustang myself. You are not even allowed to run faster than 11.00 with an independant rear suspension in ANY (RWD) car.

Both types of suspension have their place. Ford knows if they put an independant rear in that car, people WILL break them at the strip.

not allowed? there are a few Supras running around that run faster than 11s, on independant rear suspension...

NHRA rules state an independant rear is not legal under 11.00. You can't even use c-clip axles in a live axle past a certain point, which I think is actually slower, but I can't remember the actual time.

Whether or not a race track wants to abide by those rules, or is sanctioned by the NHRA is another story.

Exactly, thats what Im talking about. I drove the 400 hwy commuting for years, doing 160, 170 and sometimes 180 all the way from Vaughn to barrie and never got pulled over. Never see any cops, I might see 1 cop out of every 10 times I travel on the 400. They just pull over the swerving lane idiots

I have no time for the other silly ricers in this thread, but someone who owns a 9s Mustang should know that the live axle Mustangs do perfectly well on road courses, just like live axle Mustangs and F-bodies have been kicking the crap out of Porsches and BMWs in sports car racing for years. The FR500C/GT has been winning Koni year after year and it still uses a live axle, you think for a $125k FR500C chassis, they would use IRS if it was better.

The old 2007 GT500 on C&D's lightning lap was neck to neck with the 997 Turbo, a car that is actually faster than the Mustang in a straight line (rear engine, AWD, better factory tires mostly). I guess cars like the RS4 and the C63 AMG that are slower than the GT500 on the track are just bad handling cars?

http://www.caranddriver.com/features/07q3/the_lightning_lap_2007-feature/ll2_3a_2007_ford_shelby_gt500_page_8

The 2010 GT500 suspension is even better than the last generation and one of the best handling cars you an buy at any price.

The main disadvantage of a live axle is that because of the higher unsprung weight and the lack of independent camber correction, it's hard to have a live axle that can both handle AND give a supple ride over uneven surfaces - you can only have one. On a smooth race track, if all you want is handling, most of the IRS' advantage is irrelevant. The Mustang holds its' own on the race track, and is obviously very good at stoplight racing, it's the perfect car to have as long as your daily commute isn't Rally Finland.
