I am looking for a new foam mattress, queen size.
Does anyone have any opinions on various brands?
Tempur-Pedic is considered very good but they are almost 2x more expensive than the competition.
Looking for something high quality (http://reviews.ebay.ca/Memory-Foam-buying-guide-by-Memory-Foam-Furniture_W0QQugidZ10000000000015197) yet not too expensive. Preferably under a grand.
I checked some ebay auctions (http://home.shop.ebay.ca/Mattresses-/20479/i.html?LH_Price=500..1%2C500%40c&LH_PrefLoc=3&_nkw=memory%20foam%20mattress%20queen&_dmd=1&_fln=1&_mPrRngCbx=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m283#item4397905351). Nothing too exciting.
Found a reasonable canadian supplier of Optima (http://www.memoryfoamdirect.ca/memoryfoam_queen.php) on google.
Looking for some more ideas ...

Memory foam industry is a "buyer beware" industry. Manufactures have different specs to fool the buyer, they might say it is 5.3 density but it is not 5.3lbs density. Another scam is when they measure the foam by two cubic feet instead of one, your 5.3lb density is really 2.7-3lb density.
If I were you, I would buy the memory foam and assemble the bed, it will be cheaper and you know exactly what you are getting.

^ How could I do that?
Also, is memory foam really that much better?

Most memory foam beds are made of two to three layers of memory foam, just stack the layers together and get a cover if you want one. Some manufacters glue the layers and is not necessary. Their should be no springs in the box spring, you can get these at any mattress store or use a platform bed.
I had back problems before my memory foam mattress, since getting one, they have gone. Too each their own, but I will not buy another spring mattress again.

You could try these guys. Essentially a Tempurpedic clone. I've ordered one, and am waiting for it to arrive. Their prices are super reasonable. Aty $679 including shipping for a Queen I couldn't resist.

I definately will. I have a Tempurpedic mattress to compare it to as well. So I'm in a unique position to determine if there is much difference between them.

Essentia (http://www.myessentia.com/) produces the best memory foam mattresses in my opinion. I own one and it's several notches above anything else I've tried. I've put some time into my research and, while they aren't the cheapest by any means, their products are the most comfortable for me to sleep on.

Test out a bed at Sleep Country, then look for a similar bed to go on sale elsewhere then go to Sleep Country to price match it.
That was my strategy when I got my mattress, and saved 60% of their reg price.

Well it's been a week of sleeping on it so far. There is still a tiny bit of a smell if the room is left with the door shut. We slept on it the first night we had it rather than let it sit to dissipate the smell. No biggie for us, but some may find the new foam smell unappealing.
The mattress arrived in a long cardboard box. It was vacuum packed, and then wrapped in a second layer of plastic for protection. After we opened it up, it took a couple hours to inflate to full height.
The cover is pretty nice quality. Same as the Tempur pretty much.
The foam, I'd have to say, is close but not exactly the same as the Tempur. It might be about 10% lighter density. It reacts a bit quicker than the Tempur and feels just a bit softer. I haven't found it to be hot at all, so it seems to breathe alright.
I've had MUCH better sleep on it the past week. I'm a side sleeper and my shoulder and hip have been sore with our coilspring mattress.
I'm quite pleased to get 90% of the Tempur mattress at 25% of the cost. I'd definitely recommend this mattress, and would buy it again.

I hate spring mattresses. have been sleeping on a cheapy latex foam one and love it. We're in the market now for a larger mattress and it is quite difficult to find latex mattresses anywhere. there is a local manufacturer of them, but otherwise it is all visco-elastic "memory" foam.
After a lot of research, I think we're going to give the Novaform Grand a shot from costco.ca - a big reason is because of the costco return policy just in case we don't like the memory foam.
I emailed Sleep Innovations, makers of the NovaForm mattresses sold by costco, and got the following details:
The top memory foam layers are all 4 lbs per cubic foot (Tempur is 5.3).
The Grand's second layer is 5.3 lbs
Their foam has ILD between 12-14
In the 3 models on costco.ca, they say the regular is the firmest, Deluxe is a little less firm, and the Grand is the softest and would rate as a medium-firm.
We have actually found that we prefer the lighter density knock-off's to the Tempurs in the store (see Sears NXG and Sleep Country has a couple as well) so we'll try a Novaform over a Tempur.

Has anyone tried buying just the top layer of memory foam and putting it on top of existing mattress? I see that Costco is selling memory foam (think it was 3 inches) for King size for about $180

Anyone try memoryfoamdirect.ca or memoryfoamdepot.ca? The memoryfoamdirect.ca is almost identical to premiumsleep site that CanadianMoFo mentioned but is more expensive. Their offices are located within a couple of streets from another but I wonder if it's the same company?

They are not quite the same company, they're a secondary retail outlet of the exact same product.

That smell is really bad for you...it's called off gassing or something like this...
My parents ended up getting a deal from Costco from some company in Quebec called essentia or something...I did a lot of research on the net and apparantly the glue and stuff they put in the memory foam is really bad s**t...very dangerous...
This is from the Quebec company but can be the start to further research before you go ahead and spend money on one of these beds...I found a blog on this awhile ago as well with literally 100's and 100's of people complaining about sickness and the smell but I cannot find it anymore...anyway...

BTW-I don't work for essentia or whatever they are called.
