Hi,

I am currently living in with my sister. I am the legal guardian of her because our parents are not in Canada.

I want to know will I be liable if anything happens to her if she goes out on her own with her friends. (Abducted, hurt, or broke the law). She is currently 17 years old. I always ask her to stay home and be goodl but she doesn't listen to me. Please advise.

Thanks,

Wilson

You can't expect a 17 year old to stay home all the time. Figure out a system with her, ask her where she is going, tell her to call if she's going somewhere else, tell her to call if she's going to be later than she said she would be. Don't let her walk all over you, but to prevent that, you have to set reasonable boundaries. If your rules are over the top, or she has no way of reasonably complying with them, then there is no chance she will listen to you. Kids get very used to ignoring certain people very fast, so don't let it happen.

How much older are you than her? How long are your parent out of town for?

As far as you being liable, the law wont hold you responsible for her actions. You are only responsible if you hurt her yourself, contribute to her breaking the law(buy her booze, help her plan the bank robbery, etc.), or fail to provide proper living conditions.

Your parents on the other hand could have a totally different system, they may want to beat your ass for every little thing she does, or they may not care as long as she's still alive, you would know that though, not us.
