Not sure if there's been a topic about this before. I just saw a commercial on the space channel and it linked to this website:

I suppose it's a little weird, but I'd like to think the "Columbia Pictures" lady at the beginning, as typical of most movies tied to Columbia Pictures, is a big clue that it is a movie.

Sony Pictures thanks you. Someone in their marketing team is getting a raise because of people like you.

It's a shame the Space channel would associate itself with Hollywood fluff like this. I guess it's no different than having Seth Shostak, the face and voice of S.E.T.I promoting Jodie Foster's movie, Contact when that movie was in theatres.

Well, its based on the Mayan 2012 story though. The idea has been there before the movie's storyline was even drafted.

thats stupid, sorry.
This is the same as me telling you on a billboard that something will happen to your house(bad) or if I put a message saying _______(your name), I will get you!.. Should I get a raise if that makes you say WTF?

Yes.
Judging on the majority opinion here, the advertisements for 2012 and District 9 were obvious in their movie-promoting nature. These billboards, however deceptive you think they are, were labeled appropriately so that if a person actually watched the clips instead of staring blindly, they could tell it was for a movie.
Still sore about being fooled by the District 9 advertisements, I see.

Man I hope Paris Hilton, Perez Hilton and Heidy & Spencer aren't on that ship...or ark rather. :D
It's Roland Emmerich, he's known for making large scale disaster ridden full of CGI movies. (Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, 10,000 BC, Godzilla)
It seems he has something against New York City as NYC gets destroyed A LOT in his movies.
Oh btw guys, I applied for this company - it's great has lots of perks, travel for free since they have offices all over the world! Best of all, it's Japanese!

He is right though...that is Viral Marketing.
What is marketing? its about advertising the product. A great man once said, bad publicity is better than no publicity (or something like that). The more people that talk about the product, the more chances of it selling.
The Viral part is what makes it special compared to ordinary TV Ad's. Viral = weird or messed up advertisments. If you look at some of the PS3 ad's that were put up before the launch or early in its launch, they were all messed up and hardly made sense. But the reason they did this it to get people to talk about it.
It's like going to your friends and telling them hey did you see that mcdonald's ad for the big mac! it was crazy!! - and then they all start thinking about big mac's and then people around them think about big mac's and at that point there is a chance that XXX% of the people decide to buy the big mac or at least go to Mcdonald's.
That is the purpose of marketing. It doesn't matter if the ad is cool or has your favorite character in it etc. - all that matters is that you share or spread the word.
the OP did just that, he posted a thread about it. And now there are more people who know about this ad and will think about watching the movie.
